Getting Started 6 T ext Conv entions This manual provides condensed informat ion about how to use your device. T o mak e this possible, the following text conventions are used to represent often-used s teps: Batt er y Y our device is powered by a rechargeable, standard Li-Ion batter y .
7 Note: The battery comes partially charged. Y ou must fully charge the battery before using your device for the first time. After the first c harge, you can use the device while charging. 1. Carefully slide the Outlet Connector i nto the Charging Head (1), making sure th e connection is secure.

11 Using Google Maps In order to use some ap plications rela ted to Google Maps, you must first conne ct Wi-Fi. Fo r more information, refer to “Wi-Fi” on page 16 8. Y ou must also enable loca tion servi ces to use Google Maps. Some features require Stan da lone or Google loca tion services.
Getting Started 12 T ask Manager A pplication The T ask Manager application provides informa tion about applicat ions, including Active applicatio ns , Downloaded , RAM manager , Storage , and Help . To a c c e s s t h e Ta s k M a n a g e r : 1. Access T ask Manager from the T ask manager pop-up.
13 Installing a Memor y Card 1. Open the Memory Card Sl ot cover and tu rn to expose the slot. 2. With the gold contacts facing do wn, carefully slide the memory ca rd into the slot (1), pushing gently until it clicks into place (2). 3. Replace the Memory Card Slot cover .

Understanding Y our Device 20 Home Screen The Home screen is the starting point for using your device. Note: Unless stated otherwise, instructions in this user manual start with the device unlocked, at the Home scre en. 1. Google Sea rch : Search your tablet and the web by typing or speaking.
21 9. Quick Launch : This softkey can be set to launch several different applications. The default setting is Screen capture. For more i nformation, refer to “Quick Launch” on page 176. 10. Primary Sho rtcuts : Shortcuts to common features. These shortcuts are found on the Home screen by default.

25 Notifications When you receive a noti fication, the Noti fication icons display in the System Bar , to the left o f the Time. Notifications indicate the arrival of Gmail, Em ail, alarms, and more. T ouch a Notifica tion icon for more detail. For example, touch a Gmail Notification icon to see who sent the me ssage.

27 6. Close the Quick Settings by touching X in the upper , right corner of the Quick Settings pop-up or by touching outside the Quick Settings screen. Quick Settings also display icons under the Notific ations heading to alert you to activity on the tablet such a s new messages, ap plication do wnloads, software updates, and more.

The batter y is only charged while connected to a computer , if the device is turned off. When the device is off, press the Power/Lock key to see the batter y charging indicator .
29 Primar y Shor tcuts Primary Sho rtcuts appear at the bottom of the main Home screen. Tip : The main Home screen is usually the center Home screen. The default Primary Shortcuts are: Readers Hub, Email, Camera, Y ouT ube, Maps, Internet, Samsung A pps, and Play Store.

From a Home screen, touch Apps . 2. T ouch and hold an App icon, then drag it to App info to open a screen with details about the App.
37 Downloads : Files, apps, and ot her items you download in Internet, Gmail, Email, or in other ways, are stored on your ta blet’ s internal storag e. Use the Downloads app to view, reopen, or delete what you have downloaded. For more inf ormation, refer to “Do wnloads” on page 145.

Understanding Y our Device 40 Screensaver : When your tablet screen automa tically times out, instead of a blank screen, enable the Galaxy T a b Screensaver , which is actually an action-packed video tour of all the fantas tic features that you will find on your Galaxy T ab.
41 Section 3: Entering T e xt This section describes how to enter words, letters, punctuation and numbers when you need to enter text. Samsung K eyboar d Y our device uses a v irtual QWERTY keyboard for text entry called the Samsung keyboard .
Entering T ext 42 Using the Samsung K eyboar d The Samsung keyboard is a custom virtual QWER TY keyboard, featuring predictive text. Input charact ers by touching the on-screen keys with your finge r or use speech recognition. As you enter characters, predic tive text matches your key touches to common words and displays them.
43 Entering Symbols and Numbers The number keys are displayed at the top of the keyboard and are always ava ilable. T o enter common sy mbols, touch to switch to Symbols mode, then touch the corr esponding key . There are two pa ges of symbols. T ouch to s witch to the next page.

Entering T ext 46 – or – T ouch the Delete key to delete the selected text. Pasting T ext T o paste previously copied text: 1. T ouch the text a t the point you wa nt to paste the copied text. The Cursor displays at the point you touched. 2. T ouch the Cursor .
47 Handwriting Tips • For uppercase letters, write the letter larger than the lower case letters. • Write a dash (horizonta l line) to add a space. • Delete words by sweepin g backward across them. • T o disp lay numbers and symbols, touch and then touch a number or symbol key .
Entering T ext 48 • P en colour : Change the pen color to black, red, blue, green, or brown. • Recognition type : Set the way your tablet recognizes what yo u write. – Complete recognition : The lett ers are not entered in t he text field until you touch Enter , which gives you time to choose word options.
49 Section 4: Contacts and Accounts This section explains how to manage contac ts and account s. Accounts Y our device can synchronize with a variety of accounts. With synchronization, information on your device is updated with any information that changes in your accounts.

T ouch the Photo ID, t hen touch Remove , Picture , or Ta k e picture . Contacts Display Options There are various ways to display your Contacts and general Contacts settings.
53 • Share nameca rd via : Shares the selecte d namecard using Bluetooth, ChatON, Dropbox, Em ail, Gmail, or through Wi-Fi Direct. • Print nameca rd : Check mark the fields you want to print a nd then touch Print . Y ou can only print on a Samsung printer .
Contacts and Accoun ts 54 • Send email : T o send an em ail to on e or mor e members o f the group, touch and check mark the box next to each contact you want to send to, or touch Select all , and touch Done . T ouch Compose Gmail or Compose Email as the method for sending the email.
55 Sharing Contact Information Y ou can send a contact’ s information by way of Bluetooth to other Bluetooth devices or in an Email o r Gmail as an attachmen t. Note: Not all Bluetooth devices accept contacts and not all devices support transfers of multiple contact s.

Groups Assign contacts to Groups to make searching for contacts faster or to quickly send messages to group members.
57 Deleting Groups T o delete a group that you created: 1. From a Home screen, touch Apps ➔ Contacts . 2. T ouch Groups and then touch any group you want to delete. 3. To u c h Menu ➔ Delete . The groups that can be deleted display . 4. T ouch Select all or the name of each group to delete.

Messaging 64 Email Use Email to view and manage all your email accounts i n one applica tion. Configuring Email Accounts 1. From the Home screen, touch Email . – or – From a Home screen, touch Apps ➔ Email . 2. At the Set up email screen, enter an Email address and Pas sw ord , then touch Next .
65 • Sync email : When enabled, email from your account is synchronized with your device’ s email. • Sync contacts : When enab led, cont acts from your accou nt are synchronized with your device’ s Contacts. • Sync calendar : When enabled, ev ents from your account are synchronized with your device’ s Calendar .
Messaging 66 Managing Y our Email Accounts Y ou can view email yo u receive for all accounts in the Combined view screen or you can view email accounts individually . 1. From the Home screen, touch Email . 2. T ouch the drop-down menu at the top left of the screen to select: • Combined view : View all email in a combined inbox.
67 Composing and Sending Email 1. From the Home screen, touch Email . 2. T ouch an account, if you ha ve more than one account set up, then touch Compos e . 3. Enter the recipient’ s email address in the To field. • If you are sending the em ail message to several recipients, separate the email addre sses with a comma.
Messaging 68 7. T ouch Send to send the message or touch Save to save the email to the Drafts folder . Account Settings Account settings lets you confi gure handling of email on your device.
69 • Forward with files : T ouch the check box to include any file attachments when you forw ard an email. • Recent messages : Limit the number of recent m essages that are displayed on yo ur device. Options are: 25, 50, 75, 10 0, 200, or T otal. •S h o w i m a g e s : Display images in an e mail.

73 View and Accept an Invitation to Be come a Friend When a contact invites you to be come a friend in Go ogle T alk , you receive a notifica tion in the System Bar and the invitation displays in your Friends list.

89 Maps Settings Use the Maps settings to custo mize your Maps ap plication. 1. From the Home screen, touch Maps . 2. To u c h Menu ➔ Setting s to set the follo wing Maps options: •D i s p l a y : Set the following Maps display o ptions: – Zoom Buttons : If enabled, the zoom in ( + ) and zoom ou t ( - ) buttons are displayed on the map.
