Getting Started 6 Section 1: Getting Star ted This section helps you to quickly start using your device. Understanding T his User Manual The sections of this manual generally follo w the features of your device. A robust index for features begins on page 249.
7 T ext Conv entions This manual provides condensed information about ho w to use your device. T o make this possible, the following text conventions are used to re present often-used steps: Bat ter y Y our device is powered by a re chargeable, standa rd Li-Ion battery.
Getting Started 8 Note: The battery comes partially charged. Y ou must fully charge the ba ttery before usin g your device for th e first time. After the first char ge, you can use the device while charging. 1. Insert the USB cable into the Charging Head (1).
9 4. When charging is complete, unplug the Charging Head from the power outlet and remo ve the USB cable from the device. T ur ning Y our Device On and Off T ur ning Y our Device On Press and hold the Power/Lock Key . For more informati on, refer to “Unlocking the Device ” on page 14.
Getting Started 10 Wi -F i Make sure the Wi-Fi OFF / ON icon is set to ON and choose one of the following options: To u c h Add network to enter a Network SSID that is not listed. To u c h Scan to make sure you have an accurate list of Wi-Fi networks.
11 Enable Pur chases This screen displays if you sign ed in to your Google account. Enter purcha se informatio n for your Go ogle Play account and touch Save . – or – T ouch Skip . Backup and R estore This screen also displays if you signed in to y our Google account.

If you misplace or forget your Google Account password, f ollow these inst ructions to retri eve it: 1. From your computer , use an Internet browser to navigate to http://google.
13 2. T ouch the Active applications tab to view applica tions running on your device. T ouch to end an application or End all to stop all running applicat ions. 3. T ouch the RAM mana ger tab to display the amount of Random Access Memor y (RAM) currently in use.

25 Notifications When you receive a noti fication, the Noti fication icon displays in the System Bar , to the left o f the Time. Notifications indicate the arrival of Gmail, Em ail, alarms, and more. T ouch a Notifica tion icon for more detail. For example, touch a Gmail Notification icon to see who sent the me ssage.

Understanding Y our Device 28 USB Connectio n Indicator : The device is conn ected to a computer using a USB cab le, but it is not charging. The batter y is only charged while connected to a computer , if the device is turned off. When the device is off, press the Power/Lock key to see the batter y charging indicator .
29 Primar y Shor tcuts Primary Sho rtcuts appear at the bottom of the main Home screen. Tip : The main Home screen is usually the center Hom e screen. The default Primary Shortcuts are: Music H ub, Media Hub, Social Hub, Y ouT ube, Maps, Internet, Play Store, and Samsung Apps.

T ouch the widget to use the T raffic component of the Maps ap plication .

35 The Select wall paper from pop-up displays the following o ptions: • Gallery : Access the Gallery to select a photo. T ouch a photo to select it. Crop and resize the pictu re, if desired. T ouch Done to save the picture as wallpaper . T ouch Cancel to cancel.

37 T o manually change the or der of the icons on the Apps screen: 1. From a Home screen, touch Apps . 2. T ouch Menu ➔ Edit . 3. T ouch and hold an icon and drag it to a new p osition. 4. T ouch Save to save the changes. Y ou can place shortcuts to app lications on the Home screen for quick acces s to the applic ation.

Calculator : The calculator provides the basic arithmetic functions to solve simple arithmetic problems and advanced operators to so lve more complex problems.
39 Internet : Access the Internet. A s hortcut to Intern et displays on the Home screen by default. For more information, refer t o “Interne t” on page 78. Latitude : Use Google Latitude to locate your friends on a map and share or hide your loca tion.
Understanding Y our Device 40 Navigation : Use Google Maps Naviga tion TM to search for locatio ns, with turn-by-turn dire ctions. For more informat ion, refer to “Na vigation” on page 92. Pen memo : This app is not only useful, but lots of fun, if you like to draw .
41 Samsung Apps : Connect to Samsung Apps and make your smart device even smarter . Simply and easily download an abunda nce of applications to your device such as games, news, reference, social networking, navigation, and more. A shortcut to Samsung Apps displays on the Home screen by default.
Entering T ext 42 Section 3: Entering T ext This section describes ho w to enter words, letter s, punctuation and numbers when you need to enter text. Samsung K eypad Y our device uses a virtual QWERTY keyp ad for text entry called the Samsung keypad .
43 Changing the Input Method When entering text, you can s elect the text input method. 1. T ouch Set up input methods in the Status bar . The Set up input methods pop-up displays. 2. T ouch an input method to activate it. 3. T ouch to display that input method’s settings.
Entering T ext 44 Configuring the K eypad T o configure the Samsung keypad to your preferences: To u c h Set up input methods in the Status bar and then touch next to Samsung keypad in the Set up input methods pop-up. – or – T ouch Settings on the keyboard.
45 Using XT9 Predictive T ext XT9 is a predictive text system tha t has next-letter prediction and regional error correction, which compensates for users pressing the wrong keys on QWERTY keypads. 1. T ouch Set up input methods in the Status bar and then touch next to Samsung keypad in the Set up input methods pop-up.

47 Tip : To u c h SELECT ALL in the Application bar to sel ect all text in the field. T ouch on another area of the scree n or touch DONE to deselect the text. 3. Depending on the action you want to take for the selected text, in the Application bar touch: • SELECT ALL to highlight all text in the field .
Entering T ext 48 Entering T ext Using Swype Swype™ is a new way to enter text on touch screens. Instead of touching each key , use your finger to trace over each letter of a word. For each word, place your finger on the first letter a nd glide to the su bs equent letters, lif ting on the last letter .
49 • Contractions : Swype recognizes most words that include an apostrophe, just swype the letters of the word , including the apostrophe. • Punctuation : T ouch and hol d a key to view a punctuation menu and make a selection. • Accented cha racters : Just glide through th e letters of the word.
Entering T ext 50 Editing K eypad The Editing Keypad provides a quick way to move the cursor and highlight text. If the a pplication in which yo u are working supports edit ing, you can cut, c opy , or paste hi ghlighted text. T o display the Editing keypad: 1.
51 Section 4: Contacts and Accounts This section explains how to manage contac ts and account s. Accounts Y our device can synchronize with a variety of accounts. With synchronization, information on your device is updated with any information that changes in your accounts.
Contacts and Accoun ts 52 Creating Contacts 1. From a Home screen, touch Apps ➔ Contacts ➔ . 2. T ouch Device or an account. 3. T ouch the Photo ID to set up a photo to identify the contact. •P i c t u r e : Choose a photo fro m the Gallery . • T ake picture : Display the Camera and take a photo of the contact.
53 5. T ouch to add additional fields. T ouch to remove an unused field. 6. T ouch Add another field to add these additional fields : Phonetic name , Organization , IM , Notes , Nickna me, Web si te , Internet call , and Relationship . 7. T ouch Back to remove the keyboard.
Contacts and Accoun ts 54 Managing Photo IDs T o remov e or update a contact’ s Photo ID: 1. From a Home screen, touch Apps ➔ Contacts . 2. T ouch Edit . 3. T ouch the Photo ID, then touch Remove , Picture , or Ta k e picture . Contacts Display Options There are various ways to display your Contacts and general Contacts settings.
55 • Contacts to display : Select the contacts you w ant to display in this inbox (All contacts, Goo gle, Device, or Customized list). •I m p o r t / E x p o r t : Use the USB cable to import your contacts from, or export your contacts to, a storage device, such as a PC.
Contacts and Accoun ts 56 • Send email : T o send an em ail to on e or more members o f the group, touch and check mark the box next to each contact you want to send to, or touch Select all , and touch Done . T ouch Compose Email or Compose Gmail as the method for sending the email.
57 Sharing Contact Information Y ou can send a contact’ s information by way of Bluetooth to other Bluetooth devices or in an Email o r Gmail as an attachmen t. Note: Not all Bluetooth devices accept contacts an d not all devices support transfers of multiple contact s.
Contacts and Accoun ts 58 Groups Assign contacts to Groups to make searching for contacts faster or to quickly send m essages to group members. Creating a New Group Create a new group when you add or edit a conta ct. 1. From a Home screen, touch Apps ➔ Contacts .
59 4. T ouch Select al l , Starred in Android , or the name of each group to delete. 5. T ouch Delete to delete the groups. Choose from Group only or Group and group membe rs . Adding Group Members T o add a contact to a group, just Edit a contact’ s Group field.

61 Section 5: Messaging This section desc ribes how to send and receive mess ages and other features associated with messaging. Types of Messa ges Y our device suppor ts these types of messages: • Gmail : Send and receive Gmail fro m your Google account.

63 Managing Y our Gmail Conv ers ations In addition to managing your Gmail account, th ere are options for changing the sta tus of one or more Gmail conversations in an account.
Messaging 64 Composing and Sendin g Gmail 1. From a Home screen, touch Apps ➔ Gmail . 2. To u c h Compose . 3. T ouch the To field to enter recipients. As you e nter names or email addresses, ma tching contacts displ ay . T ouch a contact to add it to the field.
65 (Gmail account settings) Each account has i ndependent settings: •P r i o r i t y I n b o x : This setting is only available if you have configured Gmail o n the web to show Priority Inbox. If available, you can set Priority Inbox as the conversation list to open whe n you have new mail, rather than Inbox.
Messaging 66 Email Use Email to view and manage a ll your email accounts i n one applica tion. Configuring Email Accounts 1. From a Home screen, touch Apps ➔ Email . 2. At the Set up email screen, enter an Email address and Pas sw ord , then touch Next .
67 • Sync calendar : When enabled, ev ents from your account are synchronized with your device’ s Calendar . • Sync task : When enabled, tas ks from your account are synchronized with your device’ s Calendar .
Messaging 68 Managing Y our Email Conv er sations In addition to managing yo ur Email account, there are options for changing the status of one or more Emai l conversations in an account.
69 • T ouch to add a contact to the field. • T ouch +Cc/Bcc to add additional carbon copy recipients. – Use the Cc field to carbon copy additional recipients. – Use the Bcc field to blind copy additional re cipients. • T ouch +Me to add yourself as a recipient.
Messaging 70 7. T ouch Save to save the email to the Drafts folder , Send to send the email, or Delete to delete the email. Account Settings Account settings lets you confi gure handling of email on your device.
71 • Recent messages : Limit the number of re cent messages that are displayed on yo ur device. Options are: 25, 50, 75, 10 0, 200, or T otal. •S h o w i m a g e s : Display images in an e mail. Data usage • Sync email : T ouch the box to enable or disable this option.

73 • Use client certificate : Use a client certificate for messa ging security . • Por t : Set the Security type first to enter the ty pical ser ver port number in this fiel d automatically . Or enter a different port number if your emai l service provider req uires it.

75 T alk Options There are several options tha t are available while view ing your Friends list and some that are only av ailable while you are chatting. 1. T ouch to search your T alk messa ges or the current message for a word. Us e the on-screen keyboard to enter a search term.
Messaging 76 Google T alk Settings Use Google T alk Settings to co nfigure you r T alk ac count. If you have more than one account, each mainta ins its own T alk settings.
77 ACCOUNT • Bloc ked friend s : Displays a list of friends you have blocked. T ouch a blocked friend and then touch OK to unblo ck t he friend. • Clear search histor y : Erases your search history . No previous searches are show n until you search for new words.

Browse to a webpage. 3. On the webpage, touch and ho ld on the text until you see the text you w ant highligh ted, then stop t ouching the screen.

T ouch Menu ➔ Settings to set the follo wing Maps options: •D i s p l a y : Set the following Maps display options: – Zoom Buttons : If enabled, the zoom in ( + ) and zoom out ( - ) buttons are displayed on the map.

97 4. T ouch the ACCOUNT tab to choose which Google account you would like to us e or add an account. Once you are signed in, touch ACCOUNT to display your subscriptions, see yo ur favorites , see you watch later list, manage your playlists, or upload a video.
