Getting Started 6 Section 1: Getting Star ted This section helps you to quickly start using your device. Understanding T his User Manual The sections of this manual generally follo w the features of your device. A robust index for features begins on page 233.
7 T ext Conv entions This manual provides condensed information about ho w to use your device. T o make this possible, the following text conventions are used to re present often-used steps: Bat ter y Y our device is powered by a re chargeable, standa rd Li-Ion battery.

Understanding Y our Device 30 Adding Widgets to a Home screen 1. Navigate to the Home s creen on which you want to place the Widget. 2. From that Home screen, touch Apps . 3. T ouch the Widgets tab. Note: Swipe across the screen horizontally to view all Widgets.

37 Apps Scr een The Apps screen displays all applica tions installed on your wireless device. Appl ications that you downlo ad and install from Google Play™ or from the web ar e also added to a Home screen. The Apps icons are arranged in a customizable grid.

39 Dropbox : Provides access to your persona l computer files di rectly from your dev ice. Let’ s you take your photos, docs, and videos anywhere. A shortcut to Dropbox displays on a Home screen by default. F or more information, refer to “Dropbox” on page 150.

41 Play Movies & TV : Use the Play Movies & TV ap p to view movies you rent from Google Play™ Movie s or play any of your personal videos stored on your tablet. Understanding Y our Device 42 Screensaver : When your tablet screen automa tically times out, instead of a blank screen, enable the Galaxy T a b Screensaver , which is actually an action-packed video tour of all the fantas tic features that you will find on yo ur Galaxy T ab.
43 Section 3: Entering T e xt This section describes how to enter words, letters, punctuation and numbers when you need to enter text. Samsung K eyboar d Y our device uses a v irtual QWERTY keyboard for text entry called the Samsung keyboard .
Entering T ext 44 Using the Samsung K eyboar d The Samsung keyboard is a custom virtual QWER TY keyboard, featuring predictive text. Input charact ers by touching the on-screen keys with your finge r or use speech recognition. As you enter characters, predic tive text matches your key touches to common words and displays them.
45 Entering Symbols and Numbers The number keys are displayed a t the top of the keyboard and are always ava ilable. T o enter common sy mbols, touch to switch to Symbols mode, then touch the corr esponding key . There are two pa ges of symbols. T ouch to switch to the next page.

47 Editing T ext Y ou can edit the text yo u enter in text fields by cutting, copying, or pasting text. These operations can b e performed within and across apps. Ho wever , some apps do not support editing some or all of the text displa yed while others may offer their ow n way to select text .
Entering T ext 48 Pasting T ext T o paste previously copied text: 1. T ouch the text a t the point you want to paste the copied text. The Cursor displays at the point you touched. 2. T ouch the Cursor . A pop-up displays. 3. T ouch Pas t e in the pop-up.
49 Handwriting Tips • For uppercase letters, write the letter lar ger than the lo wercase letters. • Write a dash (horizonta l line) to add a space. • Delete words by sweepin g backward across them. • T o disp lay numbers and symbols, touch and then touch a number or symbol key .
Entering T ext 50 •P e n c o l o r : Change the pen color to b lack, red, blue, green, or brown. • Recognition type : Set the way your tablet recognizes what yo u write. – Complete recognition : The lett ers are not entered in t he text field until you touch Enter , which gives you time to choose word options.
51 Section 4: Contacts and Accounts This section explains how to manage contac ts and account s. Accounts Y our device can synchronize with a variety of accounts. With synchronization, information on your device is updated with any information that changes in your accounts.

53 • Groups : T ouch this field to display the Select group screen. T o assign the contact to on e or more groups, touch the check box next to each group. When e nabled, a check mark appears in the check bo x. For more information about Groups, see “Groups” on page 58.

T ouch the Photo ID, then touch Remove , Picture , or Ta k e picture . Contacts Display Options There are various ways to display your Contacts and general Contacts settings.
55 • Share nameca rd via : Shares the selecte d namecard using Bluetooth, ChatON, Dropbox, Em ail, Gmail, or through Wi-Fi Direct. • Print nameca rd : Check mark the fields you want to print a nd then touch Print . Y ou can only print on a Samsung printer .
Contacts and Accoun ts 56 • Send email : T o send an em ail to on e or more members o f the group, touch and check mark the box next to each contact you want to send to, or touch Select all , and touch Done . T ouch Compose Gmail or Compose Email as the method for sending the email.
57 Sharing Contact Information Y ou can send a contact’ s information by way of Bluetooth to other Bluetooth devices or in an Email o r Gmail as an attachmen t. Note: Not all Bluetooth devices accept contacts an d not all devices support transfers of multiple contact s.

T ouch Import from USB sto rage , Export to USB storage , Import from SD c ard , Export to SD card , or Send namecard via , then follow the prompts to complete the operatio n. Groups Assign contacts to Groups to make searching for contacts faster or to quickly send m essages to group members.
59 Deleting Groups T o delete a group that you created: 1. From a Home screen, touch Apps ➔ Contacts . 2. T ouch Groups and then touch any group you want to delete. 3. To u c h Menu ➔ Delete . The groups that can be deleted d isplay. 4. T ouch Select al l , Starred in Android , or the name of each group to delete.

61 Section 5: Messaging This section desc ribes how to send and receive mess ages and other features associated with messaging. Types of Messa ges Y our device suppor ts these types of messages: • Gmail : Send and receive Gmail fro m your Google account.

63 Managing Y our Gmail Conv ers ations In addition to managing your Gmail account, th ere are options for changing the sta tus of one or more Gmail conversations in an account.
Messaging 64 Composing and Sendin g Gmail 1. From a Home screen, touch Apps ➔ Gmail . 2. To u c h Compose . 3. T ouch the To field to enter recipients. As you e nter names or email addresses, ma tching contacts displ ay . T ouch a contact to add it to the field.
65 (Gmail account settings) Each account has i ndependent settings: •P r i o r i t y I n b o x : This setting is only available if you have configured Gmail o n the web to show Priority Inbox. If available, you can set Priority Inbox as the conversation list to open whe n you have new mail, rather than Inbox.
Messaging 66 Email Use Email to view and manage a ll your email accounts i n one applica tion. Configuring Email Accounts 1. From the Home screen, touch Email . – or – From a Home screen, touch Apps ➔ Email . 2. At the Set up email screen, enter an Email address and Pas sw ord , then touch Next .
67 • Notify me when email arrives : When enab led, you r eceive notifications when you re ceive new email sent to this account. • Sync Email : When enabled, em ail from your account is synchronized with your device’ s email. •S y n c C o n t a c t s : When enabled, contacts from your account are synchronized with your device ’s Co ntacts.
Messaging 68 Managing Y our Email Accounts Y ou can view email yo u receive for all accounts in the Combined view screen or you can view email accounts individually . 1. From the Home screen, touch Email . 2. T ouch the drop-down menu at the top left of the screen to select: • Combined view : View all email in a combined inbox.
69 Composing and Sending Email 1. From the Home screen, touch Email . 2. T ouch an account, if you ha ve more than one account set up, then touc h Compos e . 3. Enter the recipient’ s email address in the To field. • If you are sending the email message to several recipients, separate the email addre sses with a comma.
Messaging 70 7. T ouch Send to send the message or touch Save to save the email to the Drafts folder . Account Settings Account settings lets you confi gure handling of email on your device.
71 • Always Cc/Bcc myself : Lets you manage wh ether your email address is included in the C c or Bcc lines. • Forward with files : T ouch the check box to include any file attachments when you forw ard an email. • Recent messages : Limit the number of re cent messages that are displayed on yo ur device.
Messaging 72 Notification set tings • Email notificati ons : When enabled , the New Email icon appears in the Status Bar when a new email arrives . • Select ringtone : Choose a r ingtone f or email not ificat ions for this account. Server settings • Exchange ser ver setti ngs : Configure incoming server settings.
73 • Use secure connection (SSL) / Securit y type : Check this option if your server requir es you to connect to the server se curely , or if you prefer to connect securely . • Use client certificate : Use a client certificate for messa ging security .
Messaging 74 Google T alk T alk is G oogle’ s instant messag ing and audio and video chat service. Y ou can use it to communica te, in real time, with other people who also use Goo gle T alk on another Android tablet or phone or on a computer . Tip : T alk requires tha t you have a Google account.
75 View and Accept an Invitation to Be come a Friend When a contact invites you to be come a friend in Go ogle T alk , you receive a notificati on in the System Bar and the invitation displays in your Friends list.
Messaging 76 •F r i e n d i n f o : Display information about the friend with which you are chatting. The following options are also displayed: – BLOCK : Keeps this person from sending you messages and removes the person from your Friends list. – REMOVE : Remove th e friend as if you never accepted their invitation.
77 CHA T NOTIFICA TIONS • IM notifications : Set whet her to o pen a dia log, di splay a notific ation i n the Syst em Bar , or neither , wh en you recei ve a text chat. • Notif ication rin gtone : Set a ringtone to sound, o r silent, when you receive a text chat.

87 Labs • Quick controls : When enabled, the Application a nd URL bars are hidden. T o access the hidden controls, swipe inward fro m the left or right edge of the screen to access Quick Controls. For more information, refer to “Internet Quick Controls” on page 87.
Internet and Social Networking 88 Latitude With Google Latitude, you can see the location of all of your friends on a map or on a list. Y ou can also share or hide your location. Y ou must first set up your tablet to use wireless networks to help pinpoint your location.

93 Maps Settings Use the Maps settings to custom ize your Maps ap plication. 1. From the Home screen, touch Maps . 2. T ouch Menu ➔ Settings to set the follo wing Maps options: •D i s p l a y : Set the following Maps display options: – Zoom Buttons : If enabled, the zoom in ( + ) and zoom out ( - ) buttons are displayed on the map.
