Getting star ted 9 • Do not cov er the antenna ar ea with your hands or other objects. This may cause connectivity problems or drain the battery . • Do not use a screen prot ec tor . This causes sensor malfunctions. • Do not allow water t o contac t the touch scr een.

Getting star ted 11 Installing the SIM or USIM card and batt er y Inser t the SIM or USIM card provided b y the mobile telephone ser vice provider , and the included battery . 1 Remove the back c over . • Be careful not to damage y our finger nails when you r emove the back cov er .
Getting star ted 12 • Do not remov e the protective tape cov ering the antenna, as this can damage the antenna. • Do not inser t a memor y card into the SIM car d slot. I f a memor y card happens t o be lodged in the SIM card slot, take the devic e to a Samsung Ser vice Centr e to remov e the memor y card.

Getting star ted 14 Char ging the ba tter y Charge the batt er y befor e using it for the first time . Use the charger to charge the batt er y . A computer can be also used t o charge the device b y connecting them via the USB cable. Use only Samsung-appro ved chargers , batteries, and cables.
Getting star ted 15 • The device can be used while it is char ging , but it may take longer to fully char ge the battery . • If the device receiv es an unstable power supply while charging , the touch screen may not function. If this happens, unplug the charger from the devic e.
Getting star ted 16 Reducing the batter y c onsumption Y our device provides options that help y ou save ba tter y pow er . By customising these options and deactivating featur es in the background, y ou can use the device longer between charges: • When you ar e not using the device, switch to sleep mode b y pressing the P ower butt on.
Getting star ted 17 1 Remove the back c over and ba tter y . 2 Inser t a memor y card with the gold- colour ed contacts facing downw ards , and then push the memor y card down. 1 2 3 Push the memory card down into the slot and then slide it backwar ds until it locks into place .
Getting star ted 18 Removing the memor y card Befor e removing the memory card, first unmount it f or safe remo val. On the Home scr een, tap Apps → Settings → Stor age → Unmount SD card . 1 Remove the back c over and ba tter y . 2 Push the memory card into the slot until it disengages fr om the device, and then pull it out.
Getting star ted 19 T urning the devic e on and off When turning on the device f or the first time, f ollow the on-screen instructions to set up your device .
Getting star ted 20 L ock ing and unlock ing the devic e When not in use, lock the devic e to prevent un wanted operation. P ressing the P ower button turns off the screen and puts the device int o lock mode. The device automa tically gets locked if it is not used for a specified period .
Getting star ted 21 S witching to silent mode Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Pr ess and hold the Volume butt on down until it switches to silent mode . • Pr ess and hold the Po wer button, and then tap Mute . • Open the notifications panel at the top of the scr een, and then tap Sound .
22 Basics Indicator ic ons The icons displa yed at the t op of the screen pr ovide inf ormation about the status of the device . The icons list ed in the table below are most c ommon.
Basics 23 U sing the touch scr een Use only fingers to use the t ouch screen. • Do not allow the touch scr een to come int o contact with other electr ical devices . Electrostatic discharges can cause the touch scr een to malfunc tion. • Do not allow the touch scr een to contact water .
Basics 24 Dragging T o mov e an icon, thumbnail, or preview t o a new location, tap and hold it and drag it to the target position. Double -tapping Double -tap on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 25 F licking Flick left or right on the Home screen or the A pplications screen t o see another panel. F lick up or down to scr oll through a webpage or a list, such as contacts. Pinching Spread two fingers apart on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 26 C ontrol motions Simple motions allow easy contr ol of the device. Befor e using motions, make sur e the motion featur e is ac tivated . On the Home screen, tap Apps → Settings → Motion , and then drag the Motion switch to the right. Rotating the screen Many applications allo w display in either por trait or landscape orientation.
Basics 27 Picking up When you pick up the devic e after it has been idle for some time or when the scr een has turned off , it vibrates if you ha ve missed calls or new messages. Holding to ear While viewing call, message , or contact details, pick up and hold the device to y our ear to make a call.
Basics 28 P anning to mov e T ap and hold an item, and then mov e the device to the left or right to move the item t o another panel on the Home screen or the Applications scr een. P anning to bro wse When an image is zoomed in, tap and hold a point on the scr een, and then move the device in any dir ec tion to bro wse the image.
Basics 29 Double -tapping Double -tap the device to mov e to the top of a list of c ontacts or emails. Rotating While the screen is locked , tap and hold the screen, and then rotate the devic e to landscape orientation to launch the camera.
Basics 30 T urning o ver T ur n ov er the device to mut e ringtone, pause media pla yback, or mute the FM radio . Shaking • Shake the device to sear ch for Bluetooth devices . • Shake the device to updat e the list of emails or information from Y ahoo News, Y ahoo F inance, or Ac cuWea ther .
Basics 31 T ilting T ap and hold two points on the scr een, and then tilt the device back and forth to zoom in or out. Notifications Notification icons appear on the status bar a t the top of the screen t o report missed calls, new messages, calendar ev ents, devic e status, and mor e.
Basics 32 • Blocking mode : Activate or deactivate blocking mode. In block ing mode , the device will block notifications. T o select which notifications will be blocked, tap Settings → Blocking mode . • P ower saving : Activate or deactivate po wer-sa ving mode.
Basics 33 Moving an item T ap and hold an item and drag it t o a new location. T o move it to another panel , drag it to the side of the screen. Removing an item T ap and hold an item, and drag it t o the rubbish bin that appears at the top of the Home screen.
Basics 34 U sing applications This device can run man y different types of applications , ranging fr om media to Internet applications. Opening an application On the Home screen or the Applications scr een, selec t an application icon to open it .
Basics 35 Rearranging applica tions This f eature is a vailable only in the customisable grid view . T ap → V iew t ype → Cust omisable grid . T ap → Edit , tap and hold an application, and then drag it to a new location. T o mov e it to another panel, drag it to the side of the scr een.
Basics 36 Help Ac cess help information t o lear n how to use the devic e and applications or configure impor tant settings. T ap Help on the Applications screen. Select an item to view tips . T o r eset help pop-ups if you have hidden them, tap Show help tip pop-ups , and then select items by ticking.
Basics 37 Entering upper case T ap befor e entering a charac ter . F or all caps, tap it twice. Changing language ke yboards Slide the space key left or right to change language keyboards . Handwriting T ap and hold , tap , and then write a wor d with a finger .
Basics 38 C opying and pasting T ap and hold ov er text, drag or to select more or less text, and then tap to copy or to cut. The selected text is copied to the clipboard. T o paste it in to a text entr y field, plac e the cursor at the point where it should be inserted, and then tap → P aste .
Basics 39 A dding W i-F i netw orks If the desired network does not appear in the networks list, tap Add W i-F i net work at the bottom of the networks list. Enter the network name in Network SSID , select the securit y type and enter the passwor d if it is not an open network, and then tap S ave .
Basics 40 Removing ac coun ts On the Applications screen, tap Settings , select an account name under Ac counts , select the account t o remove , and then tap Remov e accoun t . T ransf erring files Move audio , video , image, or other types of files from the devic e to the computer , or vice versa.
Basics 41 C onnec ting as a media device 1 Connect the device to the comput er using the USB cable. 2 Open the notifications panel, and then tap Connected as a media devic e → Media device (M TP) . T ap Camer a (PTP) if your comput er does not suppor t M edia T ransfer P rotoc ol (MTP) or not hav e any appr opriate driver installed .
Basics 42 Setting a pattern On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Lock scr een → Screen lock → P attern . Draw a patt er n by connecting four dots or mor e, and then draw the patt er n again to v erify it. Set a backup unlock PIN to unlock the screen when you f orget the pattern.
Basics 43 Unlock ing the devic e T ur n on the screen b y pressing the P ower butt on or the Home button, and enter the unlock code . If the unlock code is forgott en, take the device to a Samsung Ser vice Centre t o reset it. Upgr ading the device The device can be upg raded to the lat est soft ware .
44 C ommunication Phone Use this application to make or answ er a call. T ap Phone on the Applications screen. Mak ing calls Mak ing a call Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Keypad : Enter the number using the keypad , and then tap . • Logs : Make a call from the history of incoming and outgoing calls and messages.
Communication 45 F inding contacts Enter a name , phone number , or email address to find a c ontact in the contacts list. As characters are ent ered, pr edic ted contacts appear . Selec t one to place a call to it . Mak ing an interna tional call T ap and hold 0 until the + sign appears.
Communication 46 Adding c ontac ts T o add a phone number to the c ontac ts list from the keypad , enter the number and tap Add to con tacts . V iewing call logs T ap Logs to view the history of incoming and outgoing calls. T o filter a call log , tap → V iew by , and then select an option.
Communication 47 Receiving calls Answ ering a call When a call comes in, drag outside the circle, or pr ess the headset button. If the call waiting ser vice is active, another call can be made . When the second call is answer ed, the first call is put on hold .
Communication 48 Call f or warding The device can be set t o send incoming calls to a specified number . T ap → Call settings → Call f or warding , and then select a call t ype and condition. Ent er a number and tap Enable . Ending a call T ap End call to end a call.
Communication 49 T ap and hold the other par ty ’ s image to access the f ollowing options: • Captur e image : Capture the other party ’ s image . • Record video : T ake a video of the other par ty ’ s images. It is illegal in many countries to r ecord a call without the other part y ’ s prior permission.
Communication 50 C ontac ts Use this application to manage c ontac ts, including phone numbers , email addresses , and others. T ap Con tacts on the Applications screen. Managing con tac ts Crea ting a contac t T ap and enter contact information. • : Add an image .
Communication 51 Once a contact is selected, take one of the f ollowing actions: • : Add t o favourite c ontac ts. • / : Make a voice or video call. • : Compose a message . • : Compose an email . Impor ting and expor ting contacts Syncing with Google C ontac ts T ap → Merge with Google .
Communication 52 Sharing con tac ts T ap → Impor t/Expor t → Share namecar d via , select contacts, tap Done , and then select a sharing method. F av ourite con tac ts T ap , and then take one of the follo wing actions: • Search : Search for c ontac ts.
Communication 53 Business card Creat e a business card and send it to others. T ap Set up my pr ofile , enter details , such as phone number , email address, and postal address , and then tap S ave . If user information has been sav ed when you set up the device , select the business card in ME , and then tap to edit.
Communication 54 V iewing incoming messages Incoming messages are gr ouped into message threads by con tact. Selec t a contact to view the person ’ s message . Listening to a v oice message T ap and hold 1 on the keypad , and then follow the instructions from your service provider .
Communication 55 Reading messages Selec t an email accoun t to use , and new messages are retriev ed. T o manually retriev e new messages, tap . T ap a message to r ead. Open attachments. Reply to the message. Add this email addr ess to the contacts list.
Communication 56 Sending messages In any mailbox, tap , enter recipien ts, a subject, and a message, and then tap . T ap → Attach file to attach images . T ap → Add C c/Bcc to add more r ecipients. T ap → Save dr af t to sav e the message for later deliv er y .
Communication 57 Labels Google Mail does not use ac tual folders , but uses labels instead. When Google Mail is launched, it displa ys messages labelled Inbox. T ap t o view messages in other labels. T o add a label to a message , selec t the message, tap , and then select the label to assign.
Communication 58 Swit ching bet w een chats Scroll left or right. Deleting chat history Chats are aut omatically sav ed. T o delete chat history , tap → Clear chat history . Google+ Use this application to sta y connec ted with people via Google ’ s social network ser vice.
Communication 59 ChatON Use this application to cha t with any devic e that has a mobile phone number . T ap ChatON on the Applications screen. This application ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice pr ovider .
60 W eb & net w ork Internet Use this application to br owse the Internet. T ap Internet on the Applications screen. V iewing webpages T ap the address field , enter the web address , and then tap Go . T ap to share , save , or print the current w ebpage while viewing a webpage .
W eb & network 61 Histor y T ap → Histor y to open a webpage fr om the list of recently-visit ed webpages. T o clear the histor y , tap → Clear history . T ap → Histor y → Most visited to open a webpage fr om the list of most visited webpages.
W eb & network 62 Opening a new page T ap → New tab . T o go to another w ebpage, tap → a webpage . Searching the w eb by voic e T ap the address field , tap , speak a keyword , and then select one of the suggested key wor ds that appear .
W eb & network 63 T o activate Bluetooth, on the A pplications screen, tap Settings → Bluetooth , and then drag the Bluetooth switch to the right. P airing with other Bluetooth devices On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Bluetooth → Scan , and detected devices are listed.
64 Media Music Pla yer Use this application to list en to music. T ap Music Play er on the Applications screen. • Some file formats are not supported depending on the device ’ s soft war e version. • Some files may not play pr operly depending on the encoding used.
Media 65 Setting a song as ringtone T o use the curren tly-playing song as ringtone , tap → Set as → Phone ringtone . Crea ting playlists Make an own selection of songs. T ap Playlists , and then tap → Crea te playlist . Enter a title and tap OK .
Media 66 T ak ing photos T ak ing a photo T ap the image on the preview scr een where the camera should focus . When the subject is in focus , the focus frame turns green. T ap to take the photo . Indicates which storage is in use . Switch between still and video mode.
Media 67 • Autumn c olour : Use this setting f or red-shifted backgr ound scener y . • Te x t : Use this setting f or books or posters. • Candlelight : Use this setting f or images of bright light against a dark background . • F irework : Use this setting f or high- contr ast scenes.
Media 68 T ak ing videos T ak ing a video Slide the still-video switch to the video ic on, and then tap to take a video . T o stop recor ding, tap . • Manual focus is not av ailable in video mode. • The zoom function may not be av ailable when recor ding at the highest resolution.
Media 69 T ap to change rec ording mode . • Normal : Use this mode f or normal quality . • Limit for MMS : Use this mode to lo wer quality for sending via messag ing. Zooming in and out Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Use the V olume button to zoom in or out .
Media 70 • Flash : Activate or deactivate the flash. • Shooting mode : Change the shooting mode. • Recording mode : Change recor ding mode. • Effects : Selec t among various photo eff ec ts that are a vailable. • Scene mode : Change the scene mode .
Media 71 • Image quality : Set the quality level for photos . H igher quality images require mor e storage space . • V ideo qualit y : Set the quality level for videos . • Stor age : Selec t the memor y location f or storage . • Reset : Reset the camera settings.
Media 72 Zooming in and out Use one of the f ollowing methods to z oom in an image: • Double -tap anywhere to zoom in. • Spread two fingers apart on any place to z oom in. Pinch t o zoom out, or double -tap to return. V iewing images using the motion featur e Use the motion f eature t o execut e a function with par ticular motion.
Media 73 • Edit : Launch the Photo editor applica tion. • Set as : Set the image as a wallpaper or a contact image. • Buddy photo share : Send the image to a person whose face is tagged in the image . • Print : Print via a USB or Wi-F i connection.

Media 77 Scanning radio stations T ap → Scan , and then select a scan option. The FM r adio scans and saves a vailable stations automatically . Selec t the radio station y ou want from the stations list and tap to return to the F M radio screen.

Utilities 84 • : Change the background c olour . • : Lock the memo so tha t others cannot view it. • : Print the memo via a USB or Wi-F i connection. The device is only compatible with some Samsung printers. S Planner Use this application to manage ev ents and tasks.
Utilities 85 Enter a title and specify which calendar to use or sync with. Then tap Edit ev ent details or Edit task details to add more details , such as how often the event repea ts, when it has an advance alert, or where it takes place. Attach a map showing the loca tion of the event.
Utilities 86 Deleting ev ents Selec t a date or ev ent, and then tap → Delete . Sharing ev ents Selec t an even t, tap → Share via , and then select a sharing method. Clock Use this application to set alarms , check the time in any location in the world, measur e the duration of an ev ent, set a timer , or use as the desk clock.

98 Settings About Settings Use this application to c onfigure the device, set application options , and add accounts. T ap Settings on the Applications screen. Wi - Fi Activate the Wi-F i featur e to connect to a Wi-F i network and access the Internet or other network devices.
Settings 99 Bluetooth Activate the Bluet ooth featur e to exchange inf or mation ov er shor t distances. Data usage Keep track of your da ta usage amount, and customise the settings f or the limitation. • Mobile data : Set to use data connections on any mobile network.
Settings 100 Mobile networks • Mobile data : Use to allo w packet switching data networks f or network ser vices. • Data roaming : Use the device t o connect to another network when you are r oaming or your home network is not av ailable. • Ac cess Poin t Names : Set up access point names ( APNs).
Settings 101 • Not-allow ed devices list : View the list of devic es that are blocked fr om accessing your device . • Download to : Selec t a memor y location f or saving media files . • Upload from other devic es : Set to accept uploads fr om other devices.
Settings 102 • V ibrate when ringing : Set the device to vibrat e and play a ringtone f or incoming calls. • Keyt ones : Set the device to sound when tapping the buttons on the keypad . • T ouch sounds : Set the device to sound when selecting an application or option on the touch screen.
Settings 103 St orage View memory information for y our device and memor y card, or f ormat a memor y card. F ormatting a memor y card permanently deletes all data fr om it. The actual available capacity of the internal memor y is less than the specified capacity because the operating system and default applications oc cupy par t of the memor y .
Settings 104 L ocation ser vices • Use wir eless networks : Set to use Wi-F i and/or mobile networks for finding the curren t location. • Use GPS sat ellites : Set to use the GPS satellite f or finding the current location.
Settings 105 Securit y Change settings for securing the device and the SIM or USIM car d. • Encr ypt device : Set a password t o encr ypt data sav ed on the device. Y ou must enter the passwor d each time you turn on the device . Charge the batt er y befor e enabling this setting because it may take more than an hour to encr ypt your da ta.
Settings 106 • Device administr ators : View devic e administrators installed on the devic e. Y ou can allow device administrat ors to apply new policies to the devic e. • Unknown sources : Choose to install applications fr om any sour ce. If not chosen, download applications only fr om Play St ore .
