Assembling 10 Inser t the SIM or USIM card. 3 Place the SIM or USIM card into the devic e with • the gold-coloured contacts facing down. If you do not insert a SIM or USIM card, you can • only use your device ’ s non-network services and some menus.
Assembling 11 Charge the batt er y Before using the device f or the rst time, you must charge the battery. Y ou can charge the device with the pro vided travel adapter or by connecting the device to a PC with a PC data cable. Use only Samsung-approved char gers and cables.
Assembling 12 Plug the large end of the trav el adapter into a power 3 outlet. Y ou can use the device while it is charging , but it • may take longer to fully charge the battery . Assembling 13 Inser t a memor y card (optional) T o store additional multimedia les, you must insert a memory card. Y our device accepts microSD™ or microSDHC™ memory cards with maximum capacities of 32 GB (depending on memory card manufacturer and type).
Assembling 14 Remove the memory card › Before remo ving a memory card, rst unmount it for safe removal. In Idle mode, select 1 → Settings → SD card, USB Mass Storage & phone stor age → Unmount SD card . Remove the back cov er . 2 Push the memory card gently until it disengages from 3 the device.
Assembling 15 Attach a hand str ap (optional) Remove the back cov er . 1 Slide a hand strap through the slot and hook it over 2 the small projection. Replace the back cover . 3 F ormat the memory card › Formatting y our memory card on a PC may cause incompatibilities with your device .

Getting started 21 Get to know the idle screen When the device is in Idle mode, you will see the idle scr een. F rom th e i dle s cree n, yo u c an vi ew y our devi ce’ s status and access applications. The idle screen has multiple panels. Scroll left or right to switch panels.

If you do not want the device to requir e the pattern, clear the check box next to Require pattern in Location & security . If you forget the unlock pattern, bring your devic e • to a Samsung Service Centre to unlock it.
Getting started 27 Enter te xt using the Swype keyboard › Select the rst character of a word and drag your nger 1 to the second character without releasing the nger from the screen. Pause on the second char acter for a moment and drag 2 the nger to the next character .

Communication 33 C ommunication Calling Learn to use calling functions, such as making and answering calls, using options available during a call or customising and using call-related f eatures. Make and answer a call › Y ou can use the buttons or the touch screen when you make, accept, end or r eject calls.

Communication 36 Set call waiting Call waiting is a network featur e to alert you of an incoming call while you are on a pr evious call. In Idle mode, open the application list and select Settings → Call settings → Additional settings → Call waiting .
Communication 37 Send a multimedia message › 1 In Idle mode, open the application list and select Messaging → New message . Enter a name or recipient number . 2 Select 3 T ype to compose and enter your message text. T o insert emoticons, press [ ] → Insert smiley .
Communication 38 Listen to v oice mail messages › If you have set missed calls to be div erted to the voice mail server , callers may leave v oice messages when you do not answer incoming calls. T o access your voice mail inbo x and listen to voice mail messages , In Idle mode, press [ 1 ] or select → Ke ypad , and then tap and hold 1 .

Communication 40 Archive messages Fr om the Inbox screen, tap and hold a message. 1 Select 2 Archive . Filter messages Fr om the Inbox screen, press [ 1 ] → V iew labels . Select the label of the messages you want to view . 2 Email Learn to send or view email messages via your personal or company email accoun t.
Communication 41 Select 8 Send to send the message. If you are oine or outside your service area, the message will be held in the message thread list until you are online and in your service area.
