Getting star ted 8 • Do not cov er the antenna ar ea with your hands or other objects. This may cause connectivity problems or drain the battery . • Do not use a screen prot ec tor . This causes sensor malfunctions. • Do not allow water t o contac t the touch scr een.

Getting star ted 10 Char ging the ba tter y Use the charger t o charge the battery before using it f or the first time. Use only Samsung-appro ved chargers , batteries, and cables. Unappr oved chargers or cables can cause the battery to explode or damage the device.
Getting star ted 11 After fully charging , disconnect the device from the charger . F irst unplug the charger from the device , and then unplug it from the electric socket.
Getting star ted 12 Inser ting a memor y card Y our device accepts memor y cards with maximum capacities of 32 GB . D epending on the memor y card manufacturer and type, some memory cards may not be compatible with y our device . • Some memor y cards may not be fully compa tible with the device .
Getting star ted 13 Removing the memor y card Befor e removing the memory card, first unmount it f or safe remo val. On the Home scr een, tap Apps → Settings → Stor age → Unmount SD card . Push the memory card until it disengages from the devic e, and then pull it out.
Getting star ted 14 T urning the devic e on and off When turning on the device f or the first time, f ollow the on-screen instructions to set up your device .
Getting star ted 15 L ock ing and unlock ing the devic e When not in use, lock the devic e to prevent un wanted operation. P ressing the P ower button turns off the screen and puts the device int o lock mode. The device automa tically gets locked if it is not used for a specified period .
16 Basics Indicator ic ons The icons displa yed at the t op of the screen pr ovide inf ormation about the status of the device . The icons list ed in the table below are most c ommon.
Basics 17 U sing the touch scr een Use only fingers to use the t ouch screen. • Do not allow the touch scr een to come int o contact with other electr ical devices .
Basics 18 Dragging T o mov e an icon, thumbnail, or preview t o a new location, tap and hold it and drag it to the target position. Double -tapping Double -tap on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 19 F licking Flick left or right on the Home screen or the A pplications screen t o see another panel. F lick up or down to scr oll through a webpage or a list, such as contacts. Pinching Spread two fingers apart on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 20 Rotating the scr een Many applications allo w display in either por trait or landscape orientation. Rotating the device causes the display t o automatically adjust to fit the new scr een or ientation. T o pr event the displa y from r otating automatically , open the notifications panel and deselec t Screen rota tion .
Basics 21 Notifications Notification icons appear on the status bar a t the top of the screen t o report new messages, calendar events , device status, and more . Drag down from the status bar t o open the notifications panel. Scr oll the list to see additional aler ts.
Basics 22 Home screen The Home screen is the starting point to access all of the devic e ’ s featur es. I t display s indicator icons, widgets , shor tcuts to applications, and others . The Home screen can ha ve multiple panels. T o view other panels, scr oll left or r ight.
Basics 23 Rearranging panels Adding a ne w panel T ap → Edit page → . Moving a panel T ap → Edit page , tap and hold a panel preview , and then drag it to a new location. Removing a panel T ap → Edit page , tap and hold a panel preview , and then drag it to the rubbish bin at the top of the screen.
Basics 24 Using widgets Widgets ar e small applications that provide c onv enient functions and information on your Home screen. T o use them, add widgets from the widgets panel to the Home scr een. • Some widgets connect to web ser vices . Using a web-based widget may result in additional charges .
Basics 25 Applica tions screen The Applications scr een displays icons f or all applications, including an y new applications installed. On the Home screen, tap Apps to open the Applications scr een.
Basics 26 Uninstalling applications T ap → Uninstall , and then select an application to uninstall it. Default applications that come with the device cannot be uninstalled . Sharing applications Share downloaded applica tions with other users via email, Bluetooth, or other methods .
Basics 27 Using the Samsung ke yboard Break to the next line. Delete a preceding char acter . Enter numerals and punctuation marks. Enter uppercase . Set options for the Samsung keyboard. Enter a space . Enter uppercase . Add an item fr om the clipboard.
Basics 28 C onnec ting to a W i-F i net w ork Connect the device to a Wi-F i net work to use the Internet or shar e media files with other devices. Basics 30 T ransf erring files Move audio , video , image, or other types of files from the devic e to the computer , or vice versa. The f ollowing file f ormats are supported by some applications. Some file f ormats are not suppor ted depending on the version of the devic e’ s sof tware or the computer operating syst em.
Basics 31 C onnec ting as a media device 1 Connect the device to the comput er using the USB cable. 2 Open the notifications panel, and then tap Connected as a media devic e → Media device (M TP) . T ap Camer a (PTP) if your comput er does not suppor t M edia T ransfer P rotoc ol (MTP) or not hav e any appr opriate driver installed .

Communication 35 Once a contact is selected, take one of the f ollowing actions: • : Add t o favourite c ontac ts. • : Compose an email . Impor ting and expor ting contacts T ap Con tacts . Syncing with Google C ontac ts T ap → Merge acc ounts → Merge with Google .

Communication 37 Business card T ap Con tacts . Creat e a business card and send it to others. T ap Set up my pr ofile , enter details , such as phone number , email address, and postal address , and then tap S ave . If user information has been sav ed when you set up the device , select the business card in ME , and then tap to edit.
Communication 38 Sending scheduled messages While composing a message , tap → Schedule sending . Tick Schedule sending , set a time and date , and then tap Done .
Communication 39 Google M ail Use this application to quickly and directly access the Google Mail ser vice. Communication 40 Labels Google Mail does not use ac tual folders , but uses labels instead. When Google Mail is launched, it displa ys messages labelled Inbox. T o add a label to a message , selec t the message, tap → Change labels , and then select the label to assign.
Communication 41 Photos Use this application to shar e images or videos via G oogle ’ s social network ser vice. T ap Photos on the Applications screen.
42 W eb & netw ork Internet Use this application to br owse the Internet. T ap Internet on the Applications screen. V iewing webpages T ap the address field , enter the web address , and then tap Go . T ap to share , save , or print the current w ebpage while viewing a webpage .
W eb & network 43 Histor y T ap → Histor y to open a webpage fr om the list of recently-visit ed webpages. T o clear the histor y , tap → Clear history . T ap → Histor y → Most visited to open a webpage fr om the list of most visited webpages.
W eb & network 44 Searching the w eb by voic e T ap the address field , tap , speak a keyword , and then select one of the suggested key wor ds that appear . Syncing with other de vices Sync open tabs and bookmarks to use with Chrome on another device , when you ar e logged in with the same Google account.
W eb & network 45 P airing with other Bluetooth devices On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Bluetooth → Scan , and detected devices are listed. Select the device you wan t to pair with, and then acc ept the auto- generated passkey on both devices to c onfirm.
W eb & network 46 Sharing files Selec t a device or w eb storage , tap , selec t files, tap Done , and then select a sharing method. Managing con tents on a w eb storage server Selec t a web st orage ser ver , and then view and manage your files .
47 Media Music Use this application to list en to music. T ap Music on the Applications screen. • Some file formats are not supported depending on the soft ware installed on the device . • Some files may not play pr operly depending on the encoding method used.
Media 48 T o listen t o songs at equal volume levels , tap → Settings → Adv anced → Smar t volume . Smar t volume may not be activated f or some files. When Smar t volume is activated, the v olume may end up louder than the device volume lev el.
Media 49 Camer a Use this application to take phot os or videos. Use Galler y to view photos and videos taken with the devic e ’ s camera. (p . 55) T ap Camer a on the Applications screen. The camera aut omatically shuts off when unused. Camer a etiquette • Do not take photos or videos of other people without their permission.
Media 50 Scene mode Pr edefined settings make point-and-shoot photos easier to take . T ap → Scene mode . • Landscape : Use this setting to take phot os of blue sk ies and landscapes with richer colours. • P ar ty/Indoor : Use this setting f or well-lit indoor scenes .
Media 51 P anoramic photos A panoramic photo is a wide landscape image consisting of multiple shots . T ap → Shooting mode → P anorama . T ap and move the camer a in any direction. When two panorama guide frames are aligned, the camer a automatically takes another shot in a panoramic sequenc e.
Media 52 Recor ding mode Change recor ding mode. Use this for delayed-time shots . Select among various effects that are available . Determine how much light the camera ’ s sensor receiv es. Change the white balance setting . Change the camera settings.
Media 53 Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Use the V olume button to zoom in or out . • Spread two fingers apart on the screen to zoom in, and pinch to z oom out. • The zoom function may not be av ailable when shooting at the highest resolution.
Media 54 • Resolution : Selec t a resolution. U se higher resolution f or higher qualit y . But it takes up more memory . • White balanc e : Selec t an appropriat e white balance , so images have a true -to-life colour range. The settings are desig ned for specific lighting situa tions.

Media 56 Editing images When viewing an image, tap and use the follo wing func tions: • F av ourite : Add t o the favourites list . • Slideshow : Star t a slideshow with the images in the curren t folder . • Photo fr ame : Use this to add a frame and a not e to an image.
Media 57 Sharing images Use one of the f ollowing methods: • In a folder , tap → Selec t item , select images by tick ing, and then tap t o send them to others. • When viewing an image, tap t o send it to others or share it via social network ser vices.

Utilities 66 V iewing a memo T ap the memo thumbnail to open it. Scroll left or right to see mor e memos. T o edit the memo , tap the memo . T o delete the memo , tap → Delete . T o change the backgr ound colour , tap → Colour . T o set a PIN to lock or unlock the memo , tap → Lock .
Utilities 67 T o add an ev ent or task more briefly , tap a date to select it and tap it again. Enter a title and specify which calendar to use or sync with. Then tap Edit ev ent details or Edit task details to add more details , such as how often the event repea ts, when it has an advance alert, or where it takes place.

T roubleshooting 94 The t ouch screen r esponds slowly or improperly • If you attach a prot ective cov er or optional accessories to the t ouch screen, the touch screen ma y not function properly .
T roubleshooting 95 Sound echoes during a call Adjust the v olume by pressing the V olume button or move t o another area. A cellular netw ork or the Internet is often disconnected or audio quality is poor • Ensure that y ou are not block ing the device ’ s internal ant enna.
T roubleshooting 96 Y our device is hot t o the touch When you use applica tions that requir e more power or use applications on y our device for an extended period of time, your devic e may f eel hot to the touch. This is normal and should not affect your device ’ s lif espan or per formanc e.
