Getting star ted 10 Installing the SIM or USIM card Inser t the SIM or USIM card provided b y the mobile telephone ser vice provider . Only microSIM car ds work with the device . 1 Open the cov er of the SIM card slot. 2 Inser t the SIM or USIM card with the gold- colour ed contac ts facing down wards.
Getting star ted 11 Removing the SIM or USIM car d 1 Open the cov er of the SIM card slot. 2 Push the SIM or USIM car d until it disengages from the device , and then pull it out. 3 Close the cov er of the SIM card slot. Char ging the ba tter y Use the charger t o charge the battery before using it f or the first time.
Getting star ted 12 Charg ing with the charger Connect the USB cable to the USB pow er adaptor and then plug the end of the USB cable into the multipurpose jack . Connecting the charger improperly ma y cause serious damage to the device . Any damage caused by misuse is not co ver ed by the warranty .
Getting star ted 13 After fully charging , disconnect the device from the charger . F irst unplug the charger from the device , and then unplug it from the electric socket.
Getting star ted 14 Inser ting a memor y card Y our device accepts memor y cards with maximum capacities of 64 GB . D epending on the memor y card manufacturer and type, some memory cards may not be compatible with y our device . • Some memor y cards may not be fully compa tible with the device .
Getting star ted 15 Removing the memor y card Befor e removing the memory card, first unmount it f or safe remo val. On the Home scr een, tap → Settings → General → Stor age → Unmount SD card . 1 Open the cov er of the memor y card slot. 2 Push the memory card until it disengages from the devic e, and then pull it out.
Getting star ted 16 Replacing the S P en nib While using the S P en, the S Pen nib ma y get dull. If the nib is dull, replace it with a new one . 1 Hold the nib with the tweezers firmly , and then pull it out. 2 Inser t a new nib into the S P en until you hear a click.
Getting star ted 17 T urning the devic e on and off When turning on the device f or the first time, f ollow the on-screen instructions to set up your device .
Getting star ted 18 L ock ing and unlock ing the devic e When not in use, lock the devic e to prevent un wanted operation. P ressing the P ower button turns off the screen and puts the device int o lock mode. The device automa tically gets locked if it is not used for a specified period .

Basics 21 F inger gestures T apping T o open an application, t o select a menu item, to press an on-scr een button, or to ent er a character using the on-screen keyboar d, tap it with a finger . T apping and holding T ap and hold an item f or more than 2 seconds to access a vailable options.
Basics 22 Dragging T o mov e an icon, thumbnail, or preview t o a new location, tap and hold it and drag it to the target position. Double -tapping Double -tap on a webpage or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 23 F licking Flick left or right on the Home screen or the A pplications screen t o see another panel. F lick up or down to scr oll through a webpage or a list, such as contacts. Pinching Spread two fingers apart on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 24 C ontrol motions Simple motions allow easy contr ol of the device. Befor e using motions, make sur e the motion featur e is ac tivated . On the Home screen, tap → Settings → Con trols → Motions , and then drag the Motions switch to the right.
Basics 25 Picking up When you pick up the devic e after it has been idle for some time or when the scr een has turned off , it vibrates if you ha ve new messages. P anning to bro wse When an image is zoomed in, tap and hold a point on the scr een, and then move the device in any dir ec tion to bro wse the image.
Basics 26 T ilting T ap and hold two points on the scr een, and then tilt the device back and forth to zoom in or out. P alm motions Use palm motions to c ontrol the device b y touching the screen. Befor e using motions, make sur e the palm motion featur e is ac tivated .
Basics 27 C overing Co ver the screen with a palm t o pause media playback . Samsung Smar t P ause Use this f eature t o pause videos when you look aw ay from the scr een. On the Home screen, tap → Settings → Con trols → Smar t screen , and then tick Smar t pause .
Basics 28 U sing Multi W indow Use this f eature t o run multiple applications on the screen at the same time . • Only applications on the Multi Windo w tray can run. • This f eature ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice provider .
Basics 29 Launching applications in a split scr een Multi W indow 1 Drag your finger fr om the r ight edge of the scr een towar ds the middle of the screen. Alternativ ely , tap and hold . The Multi Windo w tray appears at the right side of the screen.
Basics 30 3 T ap and hold another application icon on the Multi Window tra y , and then drag it to a new location. Y ou can launch the same application in a split screen at the same time. Only applications with next to its icon suppor t this fea ture .

Basics 33 U sing the S P en The included S P en can be used to easily select items or per form func tions. A c tions using the S P en with the button pressed pro vide additional conv eniences, such as screen captur e. Pull out the S P en from the slot to use it .
Basics 34 Air c ommand Pr ess the S Pen butt on while hovering the S P en over the scr een to display air command. With this f eature, y ou can directly use the following actions: • Action Memo : T ur n your handwriting int o an ac tionable link to one of a range of useful featur es.
Basics 35 Capturing scr eenshots T ap Screen W rite on the air command. A lternatively , with the S Pen butt on pressed, tap and hold the screen until y ou hear a click . I t is possible to dra w , wr ite on, or cr op a screenshot. The screenshot is sa ved in the Galler y → Screenshots folder .
Basics 36 Selec ting and capturing an image With the S P en button pr essed, dra w a line around an ar ea to select it. If necessar y , use one of the following options: • : Restore the original selection. • : Con ver t the selec tion to a cir cular shape.
Basics 37 Notifications Notification icons appear on the status bar a t the top of the screen t o report new messages, calendar events , device status, and more . Drag down from the status bar t o open the notifications panel. Scr oll the list to see additional aler ts.

Basics 40 Using the C lassic home screen The Classic home screen displa ys indicator icons , widgets, shortcuts to applications, and others. Adding an it em 1 T ap on the Home screen. 2 T ap and hold an item fr om the Apps or W idgets tab and drag it to the desir ed location.
Basics 41 2 T ap t o add a panel. T o r emove a panel , tap and hold a panel and drag it to the rubbish bin at the top of the screen. Setting wallpaper Set an image or photo stored in the devic e as wallpaper for the Classic home screen.
Basics 42 2 On the Widgets scr een, selec t a panel to edit or tap to creat e a new panel ( 1 ). Selec t widgets to add to the panel fr om the bottom pane of the screen ( 2 ). Scroll left or right on the bottom pane of the screen to view mor e widgets.

Installing applications Use application stor es, such as Samsung Apps , to download and install applications . Uninstalling applications T ap → Uninstall/disable apps , and then select an application to uninstall it.
Basics 45 U sing applications This device can run man y different types of applications , ranging fr om media to Internet applications. Opening an application On the Home screen or the Applications scr een, selec t an application icon to open it . Some applications are gr ouped into folders .
Basics 46 Ent ering te x t Use the Samsung keyboard or the v oice input feature t o enter text. T ext entr y is not suppor ted in some languages . T o ent er text, you must change the input language to one of the suppor ted languages .
Basics 47 Entering upper case T ap Shift befor e entering a charac ter . F or all caps, tap Caps lock . Changing the ke yboard type T ap and hold , and then tap to change the keyboard type . On the floating keyboard , tap and hold and move the floa ting keyboard to another location.
Basics 48 Direct pen input On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Con trols → S P en → Direct pen input , and then drag the switch at the t op right of the screen to the right . When you ar e hovering the S P en over a text field, appears at the upper left corner of the text field.

Basics 50 A c tivating W i-F i CERTIFIED Passpoin t With P asspoint, the device aut omatically searches for a vailable Wi-F i networks and connects to one . If you move t o a new area it will connect to another av ailable Wi-F i network without requiring a passwor d.
Basics 51 Setting up user profiles Set up user profiles and then select one when unlock ing the device to use personalised settings. By setting up multiple user profiles , several users can share the devic e without affecting others’ personal settings , such as email accounts , wallpaper prefer ences, and more .
Basics 52 C onnec ting with S amsung Kies Samsung Kies is a computer application that manages media cont ents and personal information with Samsung devices . Download the latest Samsung Kies from the Samsung website . 1 Connect the device to the comput er using the USB cable.
Basics 53 Securing the device Pr event others from using or acc essing personal data and information stored in the devic e by using the security features . The device requir es an unlock code whenever unlocking it. Setting a signatur e On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Device → Lock scr een → Screen lock → Signatur e .
Basics 54 Setting a PIN On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Device → Lock scr een → Screen lock → PIN . Enter at least f our numbers, and then enter the passw ord again to v er ify it. Setting a passwor d On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Device → Lock scr een → Screen lock → P asswor d .

56 C ommunication C ontac ts Use this application to manage c ontac ts, including phone numbers , email addresses , and others. T ap Con tacts on the Applications screen. Managing con tac ts T ap Con tacts . Crea ting a contac t T ap and enter contact information.
Communication 57 Searching f or con tac ts T ap Con tacts . Use one of the f ollowing search methods: • Scroll up or down the con tacts list. • Use the index at the left side of the contacts list for quick scr olling, by dragging a finger along it.
Communication 58 Impor ting and expor ting contacts T ap Con tacts . Impor ting contacts T ap → Settings → Impor t/Expor t , and then select an impor t option. Expor ting contacts T ap → Settings → Impor t/Expor t , and then select an expor t option.
Communication 59 Managing groups Selec t a gr oup , tap , and then take one of the f ollowing actions: • Search : Search for c ontac ts. • Delete gr oups : Selec t user-added gr oups, and then tap Done . Default groups cannot be deleted. • Edit : Change the group settings .
Communication 60 Messages Use this application to send t ex t messages (SMS) or multimedia messages (MMS). T ap Messages on the Applications screen. Y ou may incur additional charges for sending or r eceiving messages while you are outside your home service area.
Communication 61 Sending scheduled messages While composing a message , tap → Scheduling . Set a time and date, and then tap OK . The device will send the message at the specified time and dat e. • If the device is turned off at the scheduled time, is not connected to the network, or the network is unstable, the message will not be sent.
Communication 62 Sending messages T ap the email accoun t to use, and then tap at the top of the scr een. Enter r ecipients, subject, and message, and then tap . T ap to add a recipien t from the con tacts list. T ap +Me to add yourself as a r ecipient.
Communication 63 Reading messages Selec t an email accoun t to use , and new messages are retriev ed. T o manually retriev e new messages, tap . T ap a message to r ead. Open attachments. Change the screen lay out. Reply to the message. F or ward the message.
Communication 64 Sending messages In any mailbox, tap , enter r ecipients, a subject, and a message, and then tap SEND . T ap → Save dr af t to sav e the message for later deliv er y . T ap → Attach file to attach images , videos, music , and others.
Communication 65 Labels Google Mail does not use ac tual folders , but uses labels instead. When Google Mail is launched, it displa ys messages labelled Inbox. Selec t a label in ALL LABELS to view messages in other labels. T o add a label to a message , selec t the message, tap → Change labels , and then select the label to assign.
Communication 66 Photos Use this application to view and shar e images or videos via G oogle ’ s social network ser vices. T ap Photos on the Applications screen. This application ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice pr ovider .
67 W eb & netw ork Internet Use this application to br owse the Internet. T ap Internet on the Applications screen. V iewing webpages T ap the address field , enter the web address , and then tap Go . T ap to share , save , or print the current w ebpage while viewing a webpage .
W eb & network 68 Histor y T ap → Histor y to open a webpage fr om the list of recently-visit ed webpages. T o clear the histor y , tap . Sav ed pages T o view sa ved webpages , tap → Saved pages . Links T ap and hold a link on the webpage t o open it in a new page, sa ve , or copy .
W eb & network 69 Book marks T o bookmark the current webpage , tap → S ave . T o open a bookmarked webpage, tap → Book marks , and then select one. Searching the w eb by voic e T ap , speak a key wor d, and then select one of the suggested keywords that appear .
W eb & network 70 P airing with other Bluetooth devices On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Connections → Bluetooth → Scan , and detected devices are list ed. Select the device you want t o pair with, and then accept the aut o - generated passkey on both devic es to confirm.
W eb & network 71 e -Meeting Use this application to host or a ttend an e -meeting. Y ou can share files with attendees during a meeting. T o use this application, all devic es to be used in the meeting must be connected to the same access point .

98 Media Music Use this application to list en to music. T ap Music on the Applications screen. • Some file formats are not supported depending on the soft ware installed on the device . • Some files may not play pr operly depending on the encoding method used.
Media 99 T o listen t o songs at equal volume levels , tap → Settings → Play er → Smar t V olume . When Smar t V olume is activated, the v olume may end up louder than the device volume lev el. Use caution t o av oid long-term exposure t o loud sounds to prev ent damage to your hearing .
Media 100 Camer a Use this application to take phot os or videos. Use Galler y to view photos and videos taken with the devic e ’ s camera. (p . 107) T ap Camer a on the Applications screen. • The camera aut omatically shuts off when unused. • Make sure that the lens is clean.
Media 101 Shooting mode Several photo eff ec ts are a vailable. T ap MODE , and then scroll up or down the scr een at the right side of the screen. • Aut o : Use this to allo w the camera to evaluat e the sur roundings and det ermine the ideal mode for the phot o .
Media 102 • Eraser : Use this to erase the mo vements of moving subjects in the background . T ap to take a series of photos . The device er ases traces of mov ement from a moving subject. T o rest ore the original photo , tap , and then tap the highlighted ar ea.
Media 103 Applying filter eff ec ts Use the filter eff ec ts to take unique photos or videos . T ap and select a filter effect. The available options v ar y by mode . T ak ing videos T ak ing a video T ap t o take a video . T o pause r ecording, tap .
Media 104 Zooming in and out Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Use the V olume button to zoom in or out . • Spread two fingers apart on the screen to zoom in, and pinch to z oom out. The zoom in/out eff ec t is available when using the z oom featur e while shooting video .
Media 105 Share shot T ap → , and then select one of the following: • Share shot : Send a photo directly to another device via Wi-F i Direct. • Buddy photo share : Set the device to rec ognise a person ’ s face that you ha ve tagged in a photo and send it to that person.
Media 106 • Save as : Set the device to sav e both the r ich tone photo and orig inal photo , or only the rich tone photo . • V ideo stabilisation : Activate or deactivate an ti-shake. Anti-shake helps f ocus when the camera is moving . • Location tag : Attach a GPS location tag t o the photo .
