6 IN STALLATI ON SELECTING A L OCATION Select a locat ion that is near b oth a mo d- ular telephone jack and an AC outlet. Your TAD con nects directly to a mod u- lar phone lin e jack. If the phone line jack is not a m odular jack, you m ust update the wiring.
7 Caution : T he supp lied adapter s up plies 9 vo lts AC, d elive rs a t least 400 milli- amps, and has a plug which properly fits the TAD’s DC 9 V jack. Using an adap ter that does not meet these s pecifications migh t damage the TAD or the adapter.
8 PREPARA TION SETTI NG T HE DAY AND TIME The TAD records the day and time of the call with each phone message. Follow these steps to set the current day and ti me. Notes : • T o avoid havin g to reset the time if AC power i s lost, we recommend you install a backup batt ery before you set the day and time.
9 RECORDING THE OUTGOING MESSAGES Before you can s et the T AD to answer calls and rec ord mess ages, you m ust record the outgoin g mes sage (OGM) t he caller hears when the TAD ans wers a call.
10 Imp ort an t : Do n o t tell c alle rs t hat you are no t home. Instead , say t hat you cannot c ome to th e phone right now . 3. When y ou finish rec ording, press STOP/TI ME SET. The T A D automati- cally plays back the outgoing mes - sage. To play back your outgoing OG M 1 mes - sage at any time, press OGM 1 .
11 BASIC OPERATION SETTI NG THE T AD TO ANSWER CALLS T o Answer an d Rec ord To turn on the TAD and set it to answer calls and re cord mes sages, p ress AN- SWER once. T he TAD beeps , and briefly displays On , and the powe r indicator lights. The T AD is n ow set to answer calls using the OGM 1 m essage and record callers’ messages.
12 SCREENING CALLS To screen calls, let the TAD answ er them, then listen to the caller’s message through the TAD’s spea ker. If you d e- cide to answer t he call, pick up any phone on the same p hone line as the TAD. The TAD stops recording and re- sets to answer the ne xt call.

14 RECORDING A MEM O A m emo is a mes sage you can record by speaking directly into t he TAD, without having t o cal l in o n the phone. Follow these ste ps to record a memo up to 60 seconds long. 1. Press MEMO/REPEA T unt il oo ap- pears. The T AD sound s a long beep and 60 appe ars.
15 USIN G CALL BREAK- THROU GH If you screen you r call s but want t o be sure to know whe n calls come in from certain p eople, give those peop le your call breakt hrough (CBT ) code.
16 CHANGING T HE REMOTE OPERATION SECU RITY CODE The remote operation se curity code is preset to 784 , but you can chan ge it by following thes e s teps. Note : Be sure t o set each digit within 8 seconds. Otherwise, you must start over from Step 1. 1.
17 REMOTE OPE RATION You can op erate the TAD from almost any touch-t one pho ne, or from a rotary phone us ing a pocket tone-dialer (avail- able at your local RadioShack store). Notes : • When the mem ory is full, the T AD answe rs the call after eig ht rings and plays OGM 2 (the a nnounce- ment -only message ).
18 USING REMO TE COMMAN DS To use th e remote command s, you mus t enter the rem ote o peration securi ty code within 8 seconds after the T AD answers the call. Af ter the TAD beeps once to verify y ou entered the code correctly, enter the num ber(s) for the func tion(s) you want the TAD to perf orm.
