7 IN STALLATI ON SELECTI NG A LOCATION You can set the TAD-1016’ s base on a flat surface (suc h as a d esk or counter top), or mount it on a wall plate or di rectly on t he wal l. The base’s location a ffects the phone’s range, so if you have a choice of sev- eral l ocations, try each t o see which gives the best performance.
8 4. Route the a dapter ’s cord t hrough the st rain relief slot o n the back of the b a se . 5. Plug the a dapter into a st andard AC outlet. The P O WER indicator on the base lights. 6. Fully e xtend th e base’s anten na and place it in a vertical position.
9 2. Plug the supp lied AC a dapter ’s barrel plug into t h e DC IN 9V j ack. 3. Route the adapter cord through the upper and lower grooves and the modular cord through only the upper gro ove on t he bo ttom of the base.
10 7. Fully extend the base’s antenna and raise it to a v ertical position. Mou ntin g the Base Direct ly on the W all To mount the base directly on the wall, you n eed two wood s crews (not sup- plied) with heads that fit into the key- hole slots on the bottom of t he base .
11 5. Align the keyhole slo ts wi th the mounting sc rews and slide the base downward to secure it. 6. Plug the a dapter into a st andard AC outlet. The P O WER indicator on the base lights. 7. Plug the other end of the modu lar cord into a modular phone line jack.

13 T ELE PHONE PREP ARATIO N CONNECTING AND CHARGING T HE BATTERY PACK The TAD-1016 comes with a recharg e- able nickel-c admium bat tery in the handset. Before using your phone, you must connect the battery, then charge it for ab out 14 hours. 1. U sing a Phi llip s scr ewdr iver.
14 • A bout once a m onth, fully dis- charge the bat tery by keeping t he handset off the base u nti l the BA T T LOW indicat or f lashes. Ot h- erwise, the battery loses its ability to fully recharge. • I f t he BA T T LO W in dica t or doe s not light, but the phone does not work, recharge the ba ttery .
15 T URNING O FF/ON THE BASE’ S RINGER To turn off t he base’s ringer, set RING- ER on the back of the bas e to OFF . When a call come s i n , the handset (if it is off the b ase) and an y phone con- nected to the same l i ne as the TA D- 1016 still ring, but the base does not.
16 T ELE PHONE OPER ATION Note: You ca n use the key pad on ei - ther the hands et or the base to oper- ate the TAD-1016. T o use the features during a call, h owever, you must use t he s ame k eyp ad t hat you us ed t o make or answer that c all. MAKING AN D RECEIVING CALLS Using the Handset To make o r answer a call, lift the han d- set.
17 Or, press SPEAKER a nd p lace the handset on the base within 5 seconds. To switch to t he hands et at any ti me during a call while you are using the speakerphon e, simply lift the handset off the base. Or, if t he hands et is off the base, press HO LD o n the base, then press TA L K on the handset.
18 USING THE I NTERCOM You can u se the TAD-101 6 as an inter- com between the base and the han d- set . To use the i ntercom , press INTERCOM . Both t he bas e and t he hands et r ing. To answer the in tercom call, press TA L K (on the handset) or SPEAKER (on the base).
19 For examp le, if y ou h av e Cal l Wa iting, press FLASH to a nswer an incoming call wit h out disconnecting the current call . Press FLASH ag ain to return to the f ir st c al l. Note: If you do not have any special phone s ervices, pressing FLASH might disconnect the current call.
20 2. Press MEM O . If you are st oring a number in the h andset memory , t he BA TT L OW in di cat or f las hes . 3. Enter the number and any tone or pause e ntri es ( see “Using T one Services on a Pulse Line” on Page 19 and “Entering a Pause”).
21 Dial ing a Sto red Num ber To dial a number stored in t he hand- set’s memory, lift the handset from the base or press TA L K . W hen y ou hear a dial tone, press MEMO a nd enter the memory location n umber for the num- be r y ou wa nt to di al. To dial a number stored in t he base’s me mory , p res s SPEAKER .
22 T AD OPERATION You can use the bas e or the h andset to control the T AD. Wit h the hands et you set the day and t ime, the remote operation personal identification num - ber, record out going m essages and memos, turn the TAD on and of f, play messag es, and del ete message s.
23 SETTI NG T HE REMOTE OPERAT ION PIN The PIN (persona l identification num - ber) p ermit s remote access to the TAD. The PIN can be any number from 00 to 99. (The d efault setting is 00.) 1. Press REMOTE on the handset so the BA T T LOW indicator lights green.
24 5. Pr ess for AM o r for PM. The T AD beeps, then an nounces the time you s et through th e handset, and beeps again. Notes: • The seconds s tart to c ount from 00 when you set AM or PM. • If you make an error, the h andset beeps 5 times. Rep eat the ste ps to enter the day and time cor- rectl y.
25 3. When yo u finish your mes sage, press ST OP/7 . The T AD beeps , plays b ack the m essage, then beeps again. Note: If your message is less than 2 seconds, the TAD doe s not recognize it as a ne w messag e, and play s back the previous pre-recorded m essage.
26 SCREENING CALLS You can l et the TAD answer c alls for you while you listen t o the caller’s messag e through the base’ s speaker. If you dec ide to answer the call while screening, l ift the hands et or press TA L K if the han dset is away from the base.
27 Pr ess PLA Y on t he bas e, or pres s RE- MOTE then 2/ PLA Y on the hand set.The TAD announces the number of mes- sages and whether t he messag es are old (already listened to) or new. Then it plays each new message, followed by the day and time it was recorded.
28 DELETI NG MESSAGES To delete the current mess age, press DELETE (or DELETE/4 on the h ands et) at any time during message playba ck. To delete all messages at once, while messag es are not pl aying, hold down DELETE on t he bas e until the T AD beeps and displays 0 .
29 REMOTE OPERATIO N USING THE T OLL -SAVER When y ou call the TAD w ith RING TIME set to TS (toll -saver), it answers after about two rings if you h av e new messag es (ones you have not listened to). If there are no new mes sages , the TAD waits for abo ut five rin gs before it answers.
30 Notes: • Y ou can enter the command while the T AD is announ cing the num - ber of mes sages or during the voice prompts. • If you do not press a button within 20 seconds after the voice prompts end, the T AD hangs up.
31 T ROUBLES HOOTING We do no t exp ect yo u to hav e any prob lem s with your TAD-1016, b ut if you do , try these suggest ions. If you still have problems, take your T AD-1016 to you r local Ra- dioShack store for assistanc e. Pro b l em Su gg est i on Noise, static, or weak signal when the phone is away fr om t he base .
32 Y ou hear noise in th e hand- set, and none of the keys work. Make sure the A C adapter and battery a re prop- erly con nected. Pr ess CH to change the channel (see “Changing the Channel” on Page 17). Place the handse t on the base to charge the bat- ter y pack.

34 REPLACING THE BATTERY PACK If you follow the i nstructions in “ Co n- necting and Charg ing t he Ba ttery Pack” on Page 13, the battery pack should last abou t 1 year. If the ba t tery does not hol d a charge for more than 2 hours after an overnig ht c h arge, re- place th e battery pack with a 3.
