2 FEATURES Your lightweight and compa ct Ra- dioShack DX-396 AM/ SW/FM-Stereo PLL Portable Receiver lets you choose from a wide variet y of broadcasts on FM, AM, and SW (short wave) bands.
3 Three Power Options — let you power the receiv er with intern al batteries (not supplied), standa rd household AC pow- er (using an optio nal AC adapt er ), or DC vehicle batter y power (using an option al DC adapter). Memory Backup — keeps the pro - grammed stations in your receiver’s memory for ab out 30 seconds witho ut batteries.

5 PREPARATION CONNECTING POWER You can power your receive r from: • Internal batt ery power (t wo alkaline C batteries, not supplied). • Standard household AC power (with an optional AC adapter) . • V ehicle battery power (with an optional DC adapt er).
6 Cautions: Y ou must use a Cla ss 2 power source that supplies 3V DC and delivers at least 300 mA. Its center ti p must be set to positive and its plug must fit the re - ceiver's DC 3V jack. Using an ad apt- er that does no t meet these specifications could damage the re - ceiver or th e adapter .
7 Follow these steps t o p ower your re ceiv- er from yo ur vehicle’s b attery power. 1. Set the adapt er ’s volta ge switch to 3V . 2. Connect the Adapt aplug to the adapter ’s cord with TIP set to +POS. 3. Insert the adapt er's barrel plug into the receiver ’s DC 3V jack.
8 • When the receiver is of f, the display always sh ows local time. When the receiver is turned on , the ti me disap- pears and a radio frequency appears. T o se e the time when the receiver is on, press CLOCK . Press CLOCK again to retu rn to the radio frequency displa y .
9 USING STEREO HEADPHONES For private listening, conn ect optional stereo headphones into th e receiver's 1 / 8 -inch jack. Your local RadioShack store offers a wid e selection of ster eo head- phones. Note: The built-in spea ker disconnects when you plug in headphones.
10 OPERATION LISTENING TO THE RECEIVER Warning: To preven t possible ear inju ry and hearing loss, set VOLUME to mini- mum before you t urn on t he receive r. Af- ter you turn on the receiver , set VOLUME to a comfortable list en ing level. Follow these st eps to list en to the re - ceiver.
11 2. Press SW SELECT . m (meter) flashes for 10 seconds. 3. While m flashes, press the de sired band key ( 120m - 13m ). The receiver tunes t o the lowest fre - quency in the select ed band. T uning to a Radio Station You can tune to a station u sing the man- ual, search, direct access, preset, or scan tuning methods.
12 Using the Sensitivity Switch If you are listening to a strong FM, AM, or SW station , and the sound is d istort- ed, set the sensitivity switch to LOCAL . This decreases the receiver’s sensitivity which reduces distor tion from st rong sig- nals and preven ts reception of weak and noisy signals which ar e mo r e com m o n.
13 ERASING STORED FREQUENCIES Your shortwave rece iver permanently keeps programmed st ations stored in memory. How ever, you can e rase all or single stored freq uen cies f rom t he mem - ory buttons. To clear all the me mory buttons , you must reset the receiver.

T IME STANDARD FREQUENCIES The following frequencie s announce the exact time of da y at specified inter vals for the Unite d States. Note: Other co untries also ha ve signal stations transmitt ing this type of informa- tion over WWV or WWVH.
15 SPECIAL FEATURES USING THE KEY LOCK The lock feature prevents yo u from acci- dentally turning t he receiver on or off, changing the band or f requency, or changing other front -panel controls. You can still adjust VOLUME , TO NE , and the sensitivity switch.
16 To turn off the alarm so it will not sound again the next day, press SET/OFF . BUZZER or STANDBY disappears when the alarm is turn ed off. USING THE SLEEP T IMER The sleep timer set s the radio t o turn off after 90, 60, 30 or 15 minut es so you can fall asleep as you listen to the radio.
