manual 6 2.1.2 The IEEE 802.11g Specification The IEEE 802.11g wireless Ether net specification is an advanced extension of the wide- ly accepted 802.11b standard, and w as adopted in mid-2003. Like its predecessor , 802.11g also uses the 2.4 GHz frequenc y band.
manual 7 How ev er , the channels in the ISM band ov er la p. For example, with ref erence to the actual radio output of an access point, we find that an access point transmitting on channel three also emits a signal on the neighbor ing channels 1, 2, 4, and 5.
manual 8 Interfer ence arises whenever data is transmitted, and theref ore networks that carr y little or no data generate less interf erence. This also means that, although a netw ork with lower data traffic still functions in spite of channel o verlap, problems can be ex- pected as traffic increases.

manual 10 2.4.1 Omnidirectional Antennas Omnidir ectional antennas are generally used to in - crease the communication r ange within offices or homes . The antennas commonly sup - plied with access points are omnidirectional. Omnidirectional antennas have a beam angle of 360° in the hor izontal plane.
manual 11 2.7 Redundancy T o protect the suppor ted a pplications against f ailures , a certain redundancy must be de - signed into a wireless netw or k. This means that, if a given access point f ails, the stations it ser ved can join neighboring radio cells .

manual 14 3.2 The T oolbox The T oolbox pr o vides all the tools you need to design a wireless LAN. When y ou select Floor , Supp. W all, or W all , the drop-do wn list to the r ight in the T oolbox contains a list of the possible material types f or the corresponding building element.
manual 15 3.3 Drawing and Selecting Elements First sele ct the desir ed elem ent in the T ool bo x, then cho ose the a ppr opriat e type of material. Draw in plan elements using both the left and r ight mouse buttons: rst use the left mouse button to mark corner s , then the r ight mouse button to finish the element.
manual 16 Log. Po wer This is the received signal strength of the strongest access point at each location. Use this vie w to gauge the quality of your network co ver age. A value of –70 dB or higher is sufcient. (Remember that, since the v alues in dB are neg ative, a higher v alue is one that is closer to zero.
manual 17 3.5 The Access P oint T a b The Access Points ta b lists all the access points currently planned, and allo ws you to modify their properties . The pr operties of each access point include a name and a description, the transmitter pow er , the channel setting, and the antenna or ientation.
manual 18 For a w arehouse application, f or example, you should design the wireless cells larger and tolerate a higher lev el of interference. This increases relia bility , since the second nearest access point to a giv en location will probably be usa ble in case the nearest one f ails.
manual 19 4.3 Positioning Access Points Now that y ou have drawn all the elements of the building, you can begin to design the WLAN itself by positioning the access points and defining their properties.
manual 20 Sufficient signal pow er (–60 dBm or better) throughout the building.. Start your planning with the access points in the lo west le vel, and use a cellular struc- ture as descr ibed in Section 2.3. Set the comm unication channels of the access points in conf or mance with national restrictions .
manual 21 When y ou choose channels f or the access points , it can be helpful to switch the view mode from signal pow er to data rate, because the data rate vie w reflects any adverse ef f ects of co-channel or near -channel interfer ence due to channel settings.
manual 22 5 Adv anced Settings 5.1 Editing W all and Floor Librar ies he pr operties and settings of w all and floor m ater ials are stored in the libr ar y . Y ou can easily edit and expand this library . Each type of w all or oor is saved in a separate XML file.
manual 23 5.2 Editing the Access P oint/Antenna Librar y The antenna libr ar y , like the w all and floor libr ar y , is stored in the f or m of individual files f or each antenna type. These files ar e contained in the f older RF3DWifiPlanner/Anten- nas, and can be edited with Notepad.
manual 24 The IsZIsotropic_2_4GHz line indicates w hether the antenna is a ppro ximately omnidirec - tional in the hor izontal plane in the 2.4 GHz band. The v alue true indicates that its r adia - tion pattern is roughly rotationally symmetric with respect to the v er tical axis.
manual 25 The array , or list of values, which f ollows contains phi v alues (angle measures in de - grees) f or 72 data points at 2.4 GHz. If you use a dif ferent number of data points, replace the “72” in this line with the number of data points y ou w ant to define.
