83 A p pe ndix A : R AID Concept s RAID is a n acronym t hat stand s for Redundant Arr ay of Inde pendent Disk s. It is divided into differe nt numbere d Levels. The nu mbers of th ese Level s do not mean that one Level is higher or bett er than anoth er.
Promise A rray Management 84 Stri ping (RAID 0) Reads and w rites se ctors of d ata interleaved b etween multi ple drive s . W hen any disk memb er fails, it affects the ent ire array. Perfor mance is better than a s i ngle drive si nce the w orkload is balance d betw een the array mem bers.
Appendix A: RAID Conc epts 85 Mirr ori ng (RAID 1) W ri tes dupli c ate dat a on to a p air of drives w hile reads are performe d in paralle l. RAID 1 is fault toleran t becaus e each drive of a mirrored pair is i nstalled o n separate controller c hannels.
Promise A rray Management 86 Stripi ng / Mirrori ng (RAID 0+1) A combin ation of RAID 0 an d RAID 1 array s. It can incre ase perfor mance by reading a nd writing data in paralle l while pr otecting dat a with dupl ication. A minimu m of four driv es are req uired.
Appendix A: RAID Conc epts 87 A b out Dual Data Redundanc y One unique (t hough rar ely occ urring) feature o f RAID 0+1 is dual fault toleran c e. In some cases, tw o drives can fail simul taneously and st ill mainta in the integr ity of data. T here are six combina tions in w hich two drives can fail.
Promise A rray Management 88 Block and Parity Striping (RAID 5) RAID 5 ca lculates parity in order to a chieve redunda ncy rath er than writing a second copy of the dat a, like R AID 1. Parity is d istributed a cross the phy sical drives a long with the data blocks.
Appendix A: RAID Conc epts 89 JBOD - Single Drive An alternat ive to RAID, Just a Bunch of Disks (JBOD ) capaci ty is eq ual to the sum of a ll drives in the group, even if the dr ives are of different siz es. JBOD appears i n the User Interfac e as one or more indiv idual driv es.

95 A p pe ndix C: Netw orking Issues IP Address In order for PAM to be conf igured ov er a network, y ou must know the IP (network) addr ess of ev ery compon ent. The Messa ge Server use s IP addresses to comm unicate w ith the Message Ag ent on the RA ID PCs and the M onitoring Utility on the network PC s.
