11 OPERA TION The operation of any tractor can result in f oreign objects thro wn into the eyes, which can result in severe e ye dam age . Al ways wear saf ety glass es or eye shields while operating y our tractor or per for m ing any adjustments or repair s.
12 OPERA TION T O OPERA TE ON HILLS W ARNING: Do not drive up or down hills with slopes greater than 15° and do not drive across an y slope. • Choose the slo west speed bef ore star ting up or down hills. • Av oid stopping or changing speed on hills.
13 OPERA TION T O ST ART ENGINE (See Fig. 5) When star ting the engine for the fi rst time or if the engine has run out of fuel, it will take e xtra cranking time to mo ve fuel from the tank to the engine. • Be sure freewheel control is in the transmission en gaged position.

15 MULCHING MO WING TIPS IMPORT ANT : FOR BEST PERFORMANCE, KEEP MOWER HOUSING FREE OF BUIL T -UP GRASS AND TRASH. CLEAN AFTER EA CH USE. • The spe cial mulch ing blade will recut the g rass clip- pings many times and reduce them in size so that as they f all onto the lawn they will disperse into the g rass and not be noticed.

17 MAINTENANCE BLADE REMO V AL (See Fig. 12) • Raise mower to highest position to allow access to bla d e s. • Remov e b lade bolt, lock washer and fl at wa sh e r se cur ing bla d e. • Install new or reshar pened blade with tr ailing edge up tow ards deck as sho wn.
18 02463 CLEAN AIR INT AKE/COOLING AREAS T o insure proper cooling, make sure the gr ass screen, cooling fi ns, and other external surf aces of the engine are kept clean at all times . Every 100 hours of operation (more often under e xtremely dusty , dir ty conditions), remov e the blow er housing and other cooling shrouds.
19 MAINTENANCE MUFFLER Inspect and replace corroded muffl er and spar k arrester (if equipped) as it could create a fi re hazard and/or dam- age. SP ARK PLUGS Replace spark plugs at the beginning of each mowing season or after e very 100 hours of operation, whiche ver occurs fi rst.

24 T O REMO VE HOOD AND GRILL ASSEMBL Y (See Fig. 31) • Raise hood. • Unsnap headlight wire connector . • Stand in front of tractor . Grasp hood at sides , tilt toward engine and lift off of tractor . • T o replace, re verse abo ve procedure .
