2 - 1 2 Over view This chapter provides an overview of the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) application and how the phones fit into the network configuration. SIP is the Internet Engineerin g Task Force (IETF) standard for multimedia conferencing over IP.
Administrator’ s Guide SoundPoint IP / SoundStation IP 2 - 2 System on page 4-1 . To troubleshoot any problems with your SoundPoint IP / SoundStation IP phones on the network, refer to Troubleshooting Your SoundPoint IP / SoundStation IP Phones on page 5-1 .
Over view 2 - 3 Session Initiation Protocol Application Architecture The software architecture of SIP appl ication is made of 4 basic components: • BootROM —loads first when the phone is powered o.
Administrator’ s Guide SoundPoint IP / SoundStation IP 2 - 4 5. Download the master configuration file. This file is either called <MAC-address>.cfg or 000000000000.cfg . This file is used by the both the bootROM and th e application for a list of other files that are needed for the operation of the phone.
Over view 2 - 5 2. Controls all aspects of the phone after it has restarted. 3. Uploads log files. BootROM and Application Wrapper Both the bootROM and the application ru n on multiple platforms (meaning all previously released vers ions of hardware that are still suppor ted).
Administrator’ s Guide SoundPoint IP / SoundStation IP 2 - 6 Application Configuration Files Typically, the files are arranged in th e following manner although par ameters may be moved around within the files and the filenames themselves can be changed as needed.
Over view 2 - 7 The following figure shows one possible layout of the central provisioning method. Manual Configuration When the manual configur ation method is employed, any changes made are stored in a configuration ov erride file.
Administrator’ s Guide SoundPoint IP / SoundStation IP 2 - 8 • Ring tones • Synthesized tones • Contact directories A vailable Features This section provides information the fe atures availabl.
Over view 2 - 9 — Connected Party Identification —The identity of the party to which the user has connected is displayed and logged, if the name is provided by the call server. — Context Sensitive Volume Control —The volume of user interface sound effects, such as the ringer, an d the receive volume of call audio is adjustable.

3 - 1 3 Setting up Y our System Your SoundPoint IP / SoundS tation IP SIP phone is desi gned to be used like a regular phone on a public switched telephone network (PSTN). This chapter provides basic instructions for setting up your SoundPoint IP / SoundStation IP phones.
Administrator’ s Guide SoundPoint IP / SoundStation IP 3 - 2 Setting Up the Network Regardless of whether or not you will be installing a ce ntrally provisioned system, you must perform basic TCP/IP network setup, such as IP addres s and subnet mask configuration, to get your organization’s phones up and running.
Setting up Y our System 3 - 3 For more information on DHCP options, go to http://www.ietf.org/rfc /rfc2131.txt?number=2131 or http://www.ietf.org/rfc/r fc2132.
Administrator’ s Guide SoundPoint IP / SoundStation IP 3 - 4 Suppor ted Provisioning Protocols The bootROM performs the provisi oning functions of downloading configuration files, upl oading and do wnloading the configuration override file and user directory, and downloading the dictionary and uplo ading log files.
Setting up Y our System 3 - 5 For downloading the bootROM and application images to the phone, the secure HTTPS protocol is not available. To guarantee software integrity, the bootROM will only download crypto graphically signed b ootROM or application images.
Administrator’ s Guide SoundPoint IP / SoundStation IP 3 - 6 Main Menu The following configuration parameters can be modified on the main setup menu: Name Possible V alues Description DHCP Client Enabled, Disable d If enabled, DHCP will be used to obtain the parameters discussed in DHCP or Manual TCP/IP Setup on page 3-2 .
Setting up Y our System 3 - 7 DHCP Menu The DHCP menu is accessible only when the DHCP client is enabled . The following DHCP config ur ation parameters can be modified on the DHCP menu: Note A parameter value of “???” indicates that the parameter has not yet been set and saved in the phone’s configuration.
Administrator’ s Guide SoundPoint IP / SoundStation IP 3 - 8 Boot Server (continued) 1=Custom The phone will l ook for the option number specified by th e Boot Server Option parameter (below), and the type specified by the Boot Server Option T ype p arameter (below) in the response received from the DHCP server .
Setting up Y our System 3 - 9 Ser ver Menu The following server configuration para meters can be modified on the Server menu: VLAN Discovery 0=Disabled (default) No VLAN discovery thro ugh DHCP . 1=Fixed Use predefined DHCP vendor- specific option values of 128, 144, 157 and 1 91.
Administrator’ s Guide SoundPoint IP / SoundStation IP 3 - 10 Server Address dotted-decimal IP address OR domain name string OR URL All addresses can be followed by an optional directory and optional file name.
Setting up Y our System 3 - 11 Ethernet Menu The following Ethernet configuration parameters can be modified on the Ethernet menu: Note The Server User a nd Server Password parameters should be change d from the default values. Note that for i nsecure protocols the user chosen should have very few privileges on the server .
Administrator’ s Guide SoundPoint IP / SoundStation IP 3 - 12 Syslog Menu Syslog is a standard for forwarding log messages in an IP network. The term "syslog" is ofte n used for both the ac tual syslog protocol, as well as the application or library se nding syslog messages.
Setting up Y our System 3 - 13 Multiple boot servers can be configured by having the boot server DNS name map to multiple IP addresses. The defa ult number of boot servers is one and the maximum number is eight. The following protocols are supported for redundant boot servers: HTTPS, HTTP, and FTP.
Administrator’ s Guide SoundPoint IP / SoundStation IP 3 - 14 delete, write, and read permissions. Th e phone will still function without these permissions, but will not be able to upload fi les. The files downloaded from the server by the phone should be made read-only.
Setting up Y our System 3 - 15 the phone needs to read, such as the a pplication executable and the standard configuration files, shou ld be made read-only through file server file permissions. Deploying Phones From the Boot Ser ver You can successfully deploy SoundPoint IP and SoundStation IP phones from one or more boot servers.
Administrator’ s Guide SoundPoint IP / SoundStation IP 3 - 16 2. (Optional) Create new configur ation file(s) in the style of sip.cfg by performing the following steps: For more information, especially on the SIP server address, refer to SIP <SIP/> on page A-10 .
Setting up Y our System 3 - 17 4. Reboot the phones by pressing the reboot multiple key combination. For more information, refer to Multiple Key Combinatio ns on page C-9 . The bootROM and SIP application modify the APPLICATION APP_FILE_PATH a ttribute of t he <Ethernet address>.
Administrator’ s Guide SoundPoint IP / SoundStation IP 3 - 18 Suppor ting SoundPoint IP and SoundStation IP Phones T o automatic ally update: 1. Back up old application and configuration files. The old configuration can be easily re stored by reverting to the backup files.
Setting up Y our System 3 - 19 The phones can be configured to periodically poll the boot server to check for changed configuration files or applicat io n executable. If a change is d etected, the phone will reboot to download the change. Refer to Provisioning <pro v/> on page A-81 .
Administrator’ s Guide SoundPoint IP / SoundStation IP 3 - 20 CONFIG_FILES="[PHONE_MAC_ADDRESS ]-user.cfg, phone1.cfg, sip.cfg" CONFIG_FILES_SPIP500="[PHONE_MAC _ADDRESS]-user.cfg, phone1_212.cfg, sip_212.cfg" CONFIG_FILES_SPIP300="[PHONE_MAC _ADDRESS]-user.
