Setting Up for Surround Sound 37 SURROU ND SE TUP Surround Ba ck System This setup selects how your su rroun d back system will be use d. If you wan t to use it for surroun d back speakers in your main speaker system choose NORMAL SYSTEM.
Setting Up for Surround Sound 38 NORM AL S etu p This is the manual method to setup your sound parameters for surrou nd sound. Y ou don’t need to do this, however , if you did the AUTO SURROUND SETUP method on page 13.
Setting Up for Surround Sound 39 SURROU ND SE TUP Speaker Se tting The information below sho ws you how to select the correct settings for the type an d number o f speakers you connec ted. Most importan tly , y ou need to decide ho w to route the soun d for all the speakers you connected.
Setting Up for Surround Sound 40 1 SPEAKER SETTING should be selected. If it isn’ t use the buttons to select it. Press the ENTER button. The setup possibilities appear on your TV . 2W i t h t h e buttons choose the speakers that you want to set.
Setting Up for Surround Sound 41 SURROU ND SE TUP Channel Level The following steps show you ho w to balance the sound output level of your speakers. Proper speaker balance is essenti al for o btainin g high quality surrou nd sound. If conti nui ng from SPEAKER SE T TING go t o step 1.
Setting Up for Surround Sound 42 Spea ker Di stance Adding a slight delay to some speakers is necessar y to achieve proper so und depth, separation as w ell as an effective surround sound effect. Y ou need to figure out the distance from your listening position to your speakers to add the proper d elay .
Basic Oper ation 43 BASIC Stereo and Multichannel Playback The following instructions show you how to play sound sources with the VSX-53TX. Before doin g so be sure to comple te the setup p rocedures described in the “Easy Setup Guide P art 2” (starting on page 13) or “Setting Up for Surround Sound” (starting o n page 36).
Basic Opera tion 44 Selecting the Input Signal This button selects the type of input signal, AUTO, ANAL OG or DIGIT AL, sent to the receiver . Y ou need to take special care to switch to the appro priate input when nec essar y .
Basic Operation 45 BASIC Listening Modes The three listening mode types on the receiver are exp lained here (to select listening modes see page 4 3). The kind of playback you can get in the three m odes depends on w hat kind of a source (DVD, etc.) you are using.
Basic Opera tion 46 MOVIE modes (SURROUND mode) The MOVIE mode is a newly designed system for enhancin g movie soundt racks and other audio-visual sourc es that optimizes it s effects in accorda nce with your sour ce, SB CH MODE and speaker configurati on.

It opti mizes its effects i n accordance with your source, SB C H MODE and sp eaker configuration.
Basic Opera tion 48 Adjusting the Effect of a Listening Mode The DSP (Digital Signal P ro cessing) listening modes have soun d processing added to accentuate a cert ain kind of atmosphere or effect (see the preceding pages for explanation). Y ou can choose if you want to strengthen or weaken this effect in the given mode.
Basic Operation 49 BASIC Listening with AC OUSTIC C AL EQ Y ou can listen to the soundtrack with the ACOUSTIC CAL EQ you set au tomatically when you did the AUTO SURROUND SETUP (p age 13) or you set manually on (page 89). T o do so follow the instructions below .
Basic Opera tion 50 Listening in MIDNIG HT Mode This useful feature makes it possible to get excellent surround sound effects even when listening at low volumes. It can be used w ith any su rroun d sound sour ce and p lay so undtracks so that the quieter sounds are audible even wh il e pl ay in g a s o und tr a ck a t lo w v ol um es .
Basic Operation 51 BASIC Adjusting B ass and Treb le Y ou can a djust the low (bass) and high (treble) frequencies. The TONE button can also be u sed to bypass the tone circuitry . 1 Press RECEIVER. 2 Press the TONE button on the remote control or the front panel to put the receive r in tone ad just mode.
Basic Opera tion 52 Listening in Au dio Scaler mode Use to hear CD and DVD, as well as other digital sound tracks, at a wider dynamic range, allow ing for finer audio rep rod ucti on. 1 Press RECEIVER. 2 Press the HI-BIT button on the re mote control or HI-BIT/HI-SAMPLING button on the front panel.

Basic Opera tion 56 Video Select This function allows you to listen to one sound source whi le yo u wat ch a differ ent vid eo so urce on yo ur TV . The sound source is set in the normal fashion as explained on page 43. Y ou then change the video input with the VIDEO SEL button.
Using the Tuner 57 BASIC Automatic and Manual Tuning The following steps show you how to tune in FM and AM radio broadcasts using the au tomatic (search) and manu al (step) tuning functions. If you alread y know th e exact frequency of the stat ion you want, see “Direct Acc ess T uning“ on the following page.
Using the Tuner 58 Direct Access Tuning The foll owing st eps show you how to tune directly to a specific fr equency using the remo te control. 1 Press the TUNER button. This selects the tuner function on the receiver an d sets the remote to the tuner operation mode.
Using the Tune r 59 BASIC Memorizing Freque ntly Used Stations The following steps show you how to mem orize up to 30 radio stations in 3 classes (each holding 10 stations). When memorizing FM frequencies, the receiver also memorizes the MPX mode (STEREO or MON O).
Using the Tuner 60 Nami ng Mem orize d Stati ons Y ou c an input a name of u p to four characters for each preset station in the receiver ’s memor y (see the previous page).
Using the Tune r 61 BASIC Recalling Memo rized Stations 1 Press the TUNER button. This selects the TUNER function on the receiv er and sets the remote to the TUNER operation mode. 2 Press the CLASS button repeatedly to select a cl ass number. Each press switches the display : 3 Use the number buttons to select the channel you want.
Remote Control of Other Co mponents 62 Setting Up the Remote Control to Control Other Compon ents In addition to controlling the receiver , the supp lied remote control can operate y our other componen ts (VCR , TV , DVD, CD, etc.) af ter you pro gram it to do so.
Remote Control of Other Components 63 BASIC Programming Signals from Other Re mote Controls (LEARNING Mode) If preset codes are not available for your component(s), or the available preset codes do not operate correctly , you can use this procedure to pr ogram in signals from the rem ote control(s) of your other componen t(s).

Using Other Functions 67 EXPERT Reco rding from Aud io/Vi deo Co mponen ts The foll owing explanat ions show you how mak e a recor ding from one compon ent to an other conn ected t o this receiver . Note that an analog recorder (such as a VCR) canno t record from a source th at is connected using only a digital conn ection.
Using Other Functions 68 SECOND ZONE (Speake r System B) Setup Stereo playback in another room This setup enables you to listen to a pair of stereo speakers independently of the main speaker system (A speakers) hooked up to the receiver . The VSX-53TX has two possibilities for playback in another room.
Using Other Functions 69 EXPERT Connecting Additional Am plifiers This receiver has more than sufficient power for any home use, bu t it is possible t o add add itional amplifiers to every channel of yo ur system. Make the connections shown belo w to add amplifiers to power yo ur speakers.
Using Other Functions 70 MULTI ROOM function T o use this receiver with a MUL TI ROOM setup you nee d an external IR receiver . When used together with an IR receiver (not included), this recei ver is capable of output ting two different sources at the same time.
Using Other Functions 71 EXPERT MULTI ROOM setup 1 Turn on the receiver, your TV and press RECEIVER on the remote con- trol. Make sure your TV is set to the receiver . 2 Press the SY STE M SETU P button. The SYSTEM SETUP me nu appears on the OSD . 3U s e t h e buttons to select MULTI ROOM.
Using Other Functions 72 Controlling the MULTI ROOM system from the main room 1 Press the MULTI ROOM & SOURCE ON/OFF button to turn on the MULTI ROOM system. The display shown below will i lluminate when the receiver is in ST ANDBY mode. Also, the MUL TI -ROOM indi cator will l ight.
Using Other Functions 73 EXPERT Controlling the MULTI ROOM system from the sub room 1 From the sub room, point the remote control at the IR Receiver and press a STANDBY/ON butt on to turn on the MULTI ROOM system. The MUL TI R OOM & SOURCE indi cator lights on the front panel in the main room.
Using Other Functions 74 Memo: • Remote operation may not be p ossible if direct light from a strong fluorescent lamp is shining on the IR receiver remote sen sor wind ow . • The tuner cannot be tuned to m ore than one station at a time. Therefore, changing the station in one room also changes th e station in the other room.
Using Other Functions 75 EXPERT Multi Operations Multi operations allow you to tell the rece iver and your other components to d o a number of things with th e push of only two buttons o n the remote control. F or example, you can program the unit to turn on y our TV , turn on your DVD player and start playing the loaded DVD.
Using Other Functions 76 4 Repeat step 3 to input multi operations to the MULTI CONTROL button you pressed in step 3. Y ou c an repeat this process for up to five comm ands. F or example: you could enter the following three operations using the preced ing step 3.
Using Other Functions 77 EXPERT System Off The SYSTEM OFF feature allows you to te ll the receiver and your other components to stop and/or turn off with the push of only one button on the remote control. The steps below show you how to pro gram a string of up to 5 different SYSTEM OFF operations.

Fine Tuning Your System 81 EXPERT Assign ing the Digita l Inputs If you did not hook up your digital equipment in accordance with the d efault settings for the digital inputs (see pages 17, 19 and 22) you need to complete the procedure below .
Fine Tunin g Your Sys tem 82 Assigning the Comp onent Video In puts This receiver has two component video inputs. Their default settings are video inputs for the DVD/LD (COMP ONENT VIDEO IN 1) an d TV.
Fine Tuning Your System 83 EXPERT Function Rena me Use the FUNCTION RENA ME capability to rename the display on the receiver and you r OSD for different functions (DVD, etc.). F or example, you could rename VCR1/DVR as D VR-7000. F or this particular setup using the controls on the front panel is more convenient than using the re mote control.
Fine Tunin g Your Sys tem 84 12V TRIGGE R function This feature allows you to hook up equ ipment (for example, a relay dev ice) to this receiver that will send a power signal automatically when you select the function turned on here (for example, DVD/LD).
Expert System Settings 85 EXPERT EXPERT Setup The settings here ca n only be done if you 've per formed the more basic prelimina r y setups. Thus, b efore doing these settings do either A UTO SET TING on page 13 or NORMAL setup page 38. These settings are to furth er heighten your surrou nd sound.
Expert System Setti ngs 86 Crossover Network Crossover frequency is the point where the re ceiver divides the high and low soun ds (the frequencies) between the speakers. Certain bass sounds will play back from th e subwoofer if you selected it as YES (or PLUS) o r from the front speakers if you selected them as L A RGE.
Expert System Settings 87 EXPERT Fine Channel Level The following steps show you ho w to balance the sound output level of your speakers more finely than in the NORMAL setu p (see page 38). Proper speaker balance is essential for obtaining high quality surround sound and the better the speaker balance the better surroun d sound you can get.
Expert System Setti ngs 88 Fine Channel Delay The following st eps show you how to adjust the del ay level of you r speakers more finely th an in the NORMAL setup (see page 38). Add ing a slight delay to some speakers is n ecessar y to achieve pro per sound depth, separation as well as an effective su rround sound effect .
Expert System Settings 89 EXPERT Acoustic Calibration EQ This receiver lets you choose between two types of ACOUSTIC CAL EQ equalizer cur ves: ALL CH ADJUST and FRONT ALIGN, with the former equalizing the spe akers in dividually and the la tter eq ualizing the speake rs in accordance with the front speakers.

Expert System Setti ngs 94 Bass Pe ak Lev el The LFE (Low F req uency Effec t) chan nel in Dol by Digital and DTS p rogram sourc es can pr oduce heav ily concentrated ultra-low bass tones that may exceed the ca pabilities of your speaker system. The followin g steps show you how to limit the peak level for the LFE channel.
Expert System Settings 95 EXPERT Dynamic Range Control This feature makes it possible to enjo y full surround sound effects on Dolby Digital and DTS sources ev en at low volumes. It does this by compressing the dynamic range. Dynam ic range is the difference between the loudest and the softest sound s in any given signal.
Techno Tidbi ts and Probl em-solving 96 Dol by Dolby Digital Dolby Digital is a discrete digital surround format used for multichannel surround sound. It was developed after the Dolby Surr ound Syst em and Dolby P ro L ogic S urr ound Sy ste m.
Techno Tidbits and Problem-solving 97 EXPERT DTS- ES DTS launched a new su rround format in November 2 000. This has co me to be known as D TS Extended Su rround or simply DTS-ES. T he technology has b een advan ced to in clude two new home formats DTS-ES Discrete 6.
