Installing Hardware 7 CHAPTER 2: Inst alling Y our A TI Graphics Card Inst alling Hardware This chapter will guide you through the phy si cal instal lation of your new Radeon® graphics card. Graphics Card Bus T ypes There are three possible card bus type s.
8 Basic Graph ics Card Installation connection to the computer’s po wer supply, follow the Advanced Install instructions for either AGP or PCIe, as appropriate. Radeon® graphics cards that require a connection to the computer’s power supply will have a power cable connected to them.
Advanced Installation: AGP 9 Advanced Inst allation: AGP There are two types of installation. If your graphics card does not require a separate connection to the comp uter ’s power supply, fol l o w the Basic Inst all in structions.
10 Advanced Installation: AGP Installing the Radeon® graphics card 1 T urn off t he comp uter , mon itor , and oth er peripheral devices. 2 Unplug the computer ’ s power cord and disconnect all cables from the back of your computer . 3 Remove the computer cover .
Advanced Installation: PCIe ™ 11 6 Align your A TI graphics card with the slot and press it in firm ly un til the card is fully seated. 7 Remove the power cable from th e hard drive power connector . 8 Connect the power extension cable to the 4-pin power connection on the graphics card.

Connecting Devices 13 3 Remove the computer cover . If necessary , consult your computer ’ s manual for help in removing the cover . 4 Unscrew or unfasten and remove any existing graphics card from your computer . Note: If your computer has an on-board graphics capability , you may need to disable it on th e motherboard.

15 CHAPTER 3: Using Multiple Displays Connecting Y our Monitors Your Radeon® X 1600 Series graphics card prov ides hardware support for two DVI-I monitors a DVI-I m oni tor and a VGA monitor usin g the supplied DVI-I-to-VGA adapter. It also provides TV output via an S-Video Out connector.
16 Note: If you use multiple monito rs, the Radeon® X16 00 Series card must be the primary graphics car d. Normally , the system BIOS determines which graphics card will be the primary . Note: The top DVI-I connector is single-l ink and the bott om connector is dual-l ink.

48 Monitor Attributes Monitor Attributes Monitor Attributes provides information about the att ached monitor. You can also enable Extended Display Identification Data. Extended Display Identification Data (EDID) uses the information provided by the attached monitor t o determine the li mits for the resolut ion and refresh rate.

52 Avivo™ Color A vivo™ Color Use Avivo™ Color with ATI graphics cards that support s per-display color settings. Independently set the hue, sa turation , and col or temperature for each attached and enabled display. Set Hue Refers to a specific color within the vi sible spectrum of light, defined by its dominant wavelength .
HDTV Support 53 Note: Clicking Def aults will restore the defaults for the current view only . Previou s settings are not altered and will be saved o nce you click OK .
54 HDTV Support Add an HDTV format The Predefined and Cust om HDTV Formats list box should list any standard and optimized HDTV formats supported by the dig ital panel’s EDID. If the list is empty, then no HDTV format s are natively supported. 1 From the T ree V iew pane, expand Digi ta l Panel Properties .

Standard Settings 57 Adjust your S tandard settings The default selection is Balanced . 1 From the T ree V iew , click 3D . 2 Click Standard Settings. 3 If necessary , remove the check mark from Use custom settings .
58 Anti-aliasing Anti-aliasing Anti-aliasing is a technique used to smooth out the jagged edges of three- dimensional curved objects or objects with di agon al edges.

T o do so, make sure the Let the Application Decide check box is not selected. 4 Click and drag the slider to the desired setting. 60 Adaptive Anti-aliasing Adaptive Anti-aliasing Adaptive anti-aliasing is a technique that applie s a com bination of multi- sampling (MSAA) and super-sampling (SSAA) on 3D object s to improve edge smoothness and fine detail .
Anisotropic Filtering 61 4 Click the Contr ol slider and move the selector to your preferred setting: • T o increase processing performance, move the slider t o the lef t. • T o increase image quality , move the sli der to the right. 64 Mipmap Detail Level Mipmap Det ail Level Mipmapping is a texturing techn ique that preserves the detail on a 3D object’s surface as it moves into the b ackground. A series of high- and low- resolution texture maps are stored in memory and selectiv ely used to create the object’s surface, depending on wh at level of detail is needed.

82 Deinterlacing • Auto Detect lets the multimedia driver to select the best deinterlacing schem e for diff erent video sources and sizes. • Bob deinterlacing, when selected, removes every other line of th e video image and is recommend e d for mot ion video.
All Settings 83 All Settings The All Settings page combines all of the principal Video features onto a single page, without any preview window, allowing quick access and adjustment. This page is useful when it is not n ecessary to preview the adjusted settings because the effect is al ready known or understood.

VPU Recover 87 Enable VPU Recover 1 From the T ree V iew pane, click VPU Recover . 2 Click Enable VPU Recover . Prepare an error report You can chose to send an error report to ATI if VPU Recover is activated. This report assists ATI in determining the cause of the problem.
88 CrossFire™ An email is created containing the er ror report for submission to AT I Technologies. Note: No personal information is includ ed in the error report. Apply your settin gs 1 Click Ap ply to save your changes and leave the Catalyst™ Co ntrol Center open.
CrossFire™ 89 When CrossFire™ is enabled, any one of the four following display modes are available: • SuperT iling - A graphical lo ad-balancing scheme where CrossFire™ renders altern ate small 32x32 pixel squares i n a fine- grained checkerboard pattern.
90 CrossFire™ Enable C rossFire™ 1 From the T ree V iew pane, click CrossFir e™ in Advanced V iew . 2 Click Enable Cr ossFire™ . When CrossFire™ is successfully enab led all display devices, except the one used by CrossFire™, will be disabled.

92 CrossFire™ CrossFire™ graphics card co nnections In order for CrossFire™ to funct ion the interconnect cab le must be correctly connected to both the Ma ster and Slave graphics cards . 1 Connect the DMS-59™/VHDCI connect or of the interconnect cable to the DMS-59™ connect ion on th e Master card.

96 Using TV Out 3 Looking at the back of your PC, locate your S-V id eo Out. Using an S- V ideo cable, attach one end of the cab le to your graphics card an d the other to your TV. Refer to the illust rat ion. 4 Power on your TV first, then your com pu ter .
