Getting started 2 Quick r ef er ence guide - t elephone base IN USE indicator On when the handset is in use or when the answering system is answering an incoming call. Flashes when another telephone is in use on the same line. Flashes quickly when there is an incoming call.
Getting started 3 Install the telephone base close to a telephone jack and a power outlet not controll ed by a wall switch. The telephone base can be placed on a flat surface or vertically mounted on the wall (see page 7). For optimum range and better reception, place the telephone base in a central and open location.

Getting started 5 Bat t ery installation & char ging Install the batt ery as shown on the next page. Once you hav e installed the battery , the screen indicates the bat tery status (see tabl e below). If necessary , place the handset in the telephone base or char ger to charge the batt ery.

9 T e l ep ho ne s et t i n g s Menu settings Use the menus to change the telephone’s set tings. 1. Press MENU/ SELE CT in idle mode (when the phone is not in use) to enter the main menu. 2. Use q CID or DIR p to scroll t o the feature to be changed.
Handset settings 10 T elephone settings Ringer tone This featur e allows you to choose one of 10 ringer tones. 1. Press MENU/ SELE CT when in idle mode to enter the main menu. 2. Use q CID or DIR p to scroll t o >RINGER T ONE , then press MENU /SELECT .
Handset settings 11 T elephone settings Set date/time The answering system announces the dat e and time of the message prior to playing it. Bef ore using the answering syst em, set the date and time as follows. If you subscribe t o caller ID service, the day , month and time are set automatically with each inc oming call.
Handset settings 12 T elephone settings V oicemail (visual message waiting) indicat or If you subscribe to a voic email service offered b y your local telephone company , the voicemail waiting indicat or feature will provide visual indication when y ou have new voicemail messages.
Handset settings 13 T elephone settings Home ar ea code If you dial seven digits to mak e a local call (no area code r equired), enter your area code int o the telephone as the home ar ea code. When you rec eive a call from within your home ar ea code, the caller ID history only displays the seven digits of the telephone number .

Handset settings 18 Answering syst em settings Message alert tone When the message alert tone is set to ON , and there is at least one new message, the telephone base beeps every 10 seconds. Unless you change it, the message alert tone is set to off. To change the setting: 1.

The screen display s the elapsed time as you talk (in hours, minutes and seconds). NOTE: Press PHONE /FLASH to access services from your local telephone company does not affect the elapsed time.

26 About the dir ect ory Shar ed dir ectory The direct ory is stored in the t elephone base, and is shared by all handsets. Changes made to the dir ectory on any one handset will apply to all. NOTE: Only one handset can review the directory at a time.

31 About caller ID This product supports caller ID servic es provided by most local telephone servic e companies. Depending on your service subscription, you may see the caller’s number , or the caller’s name and number that are sent by the t elephone company after the first or sec ond ring.
Caller ID 32 C al l er I D o p e r at i o n Memory match If the incoming telephone number e xactly matches a telephone number in your dir ectory, the name that appears on the screen mat ches the corresponding name in your direct ory .
Caller ID 33 Caller ID hist ory How the caller ID his tory (call l og) works The telephone stor es caller ID information about the last 50 incoming calls in the telephone base. Entries ar e stored in reverse chr onological order . The phone deletes the oldest entry when the log is full to mak e room for new calls.
Caller ID 34 Caller ID hist ory T o r eview the caller hist ory 1. When a handset is in idle mode, press q CID t o review the caller ID history in r everse chronol ogical order starting with the most recent call.
Caller ID 35 Caller ID hist ory Dial a call log entry 1. When in the call log, press q CID or DIR p to browse. 2. Press PHONE/ FLASH or SPEAKER to dial the entry. Delet e entries • Press MUTE /DELETE to delete the shown entry fr om the caller ID history.
Caller ID 36 R easons for missing caller ID inf ormation There ar e also occasions when other information or no information shows f or various reasons: On-scr een message Reason PRIVATE NUMBER The caller pref ers not to show the phone number . PRIVATE NAME The caller pref ers not to show the name.
37 About the answering syst em Answering sys tem and voic email Y our telephone has separate indicat ors for two differ ent types of voice messages: those left on its built-in answering s ystem and those left at your service pr ovider’s voicemail (fees ma y apply).
Answering system 38 About the answering syst em New message indication The message window on the telephone base flashes and shows on the handset when there ar e new answering system messages. If the new message alert tone is turned on, the t elephone base beeps every 10 seconds when ther e are unreviewed messages.
Answering system 39 Messages playback If you have new messages, you hear only the new messages (oldest first). If there are no new messages, the system plays back all the messages (oldest first). When playback begins, the total number of messages is announc ed.
Answering system 40 Messages playback Options during playback When a message is playing, you can adjust the playback volume, skip, repeat, or delete the message. When playing messages ar e playing on the telephone base: • Press VOLUME button to adjust the message playback volume.
Answering system 41 R ecor ding & playing memos Memos are messages you r ecord at a handset. They are sav ed, played back and deleted e xactly like inc oming messages. Y ou can record a memo as a reminder to y ourself, or l eave a message for others who use the answering system.
Answering system 42 Base message count er displays The base message counter display s the total number of answering syst em messages. See the table below for other message c ounter displays. Message count er displays 0 No messages. 0-6 T elephone base ringer level while adjusting.

Appendix C 49 C ONNECTING... appears on my cordl ess handset. • Ensure that the telephone base is powered up. • Place the cordless handset in the tel ephone base for one minute to allow the c ordless handset and base t o resynchr onize. • Move the cordless handset closer t o the telephone base.
Appendix C 50 T r oubleshooting The batteries will not hold a charge. • If the cordless handset is in the telephone base or charger and the char ge light does not come on, ref er to The char ge light is off (page 53) in this T roubl eshooting guide.
Appendix C 51 T r oubleshooting • Do not install this phone near a microwave oven or on the same electrical outlet. Y ou may experience decreased performanc e while the microwa ve oven is operating. • If your phone is plugged in with a modem or a surge protect or, plug the phone (or modem/sur ge protect or) into a differ ent location.
Appendix C 52 • Make sure that the ringer is not turned off . Refer to Ringer volume on page 9 in this user’s manual. • Make sure the tel ephone line cord is plugged secur ely into the telephone base and the t elephone jack. Make sure the power cor d is securely plugged in.
Appendix C 53 • Other electronic products can cause int erferenc e with your cor dless phone. Try inst alling your phone as far away as possibl e from electr onic devices such as wireless r outers, or other cordless t elephones. • Move the handset closer to the base.
Appendix C 54 Incomplete messages. • If a caller leaves a very long message, part of it may be lost when the system disc onnects the call after f our minutes. • If the caller pauses for longer than seven seconds, the system st ops recor ding and disconnects the call.
Appendix C 55 • If the memory is full or if the answering system is off, the answering system answers a fter 10 rings. • In some cases, the answering system is affected b y the ringing system used buy the t elephone service pro vider (page 37).
Appendix C 56 Common cure for electr onic equipment. If the telephone does not seem to be r esponding normally , try putting the cordless handset in the telephone base or char ger .
