5 2.0 GENERAL INFORMATION Congratulations on y our purchase of this USB Modem. The Model 2192/USB/V .92 Modem features the latest inno vations in high speed modem design to make electronic comm unication f aster and easier , including V .92 compatibility .
6 • Modem-on-Hold • V .44 Data Compression QuickConnect Allows y our modem to connect to the ISP f aster than bef ore. V er y simply , QuickConnect shortens the time it takes to make a connection b y remembering the phone line and ISP characteristics, then storing them f or later usage.
7 3.0 INSTALLATION This chapter contains the f ollowing sections that describe installing the modem driver softw are: • Section 3.1, “Setting Up the Modem in Windows 98” on page 7 • Section 3.2, “Setting Up the Modem in Windows ME” on page 11 • Section , “Congratulations! The modem is installed.
8 1. Inser t the CD into your CD-R OM and the system will e x ecute the setup.ex e automatically . The Modem Installation window (see Figure 2) will appear . Click to begin installing the modem driver . Figure 2. Modem Installation window 2. When the Setup Complete message displa ys (see Figure 3), Click .
9 3. Connect one end of the USB cable supplied with the modem to the USB por t on the modem (see Figure 4). Figure 4. USB por t location 4. Connect the other end of the cable to one of the PC’ s USB por ts. The por t is usually labeled with the symbol shown in Figure 5.

Plug the other end of the RJ-11 cable into the modular jac k on the wall outlet or optional T adapter . 7. V er ify that the red PO WER LED on the modem (see Figure 7) is lit.
11 8. Windows 98 detects the USB modem automatically and displa ys the message Add Ne w Hardware Wizard , click Next to continue (see Figure 8). Figure 8. 12 5. Plug one end of the RJ-11 cable supplied with the modem into the RJ-11 jack (see Figure 6 on page 10). 6. Plug the other end of the RJ-11 cable into the modular jac k on the wall outlet or optional T adapter . 7. V er ify that the red PO WER LED on the modem (see Figure 7 on page 10) is lit.

14 Note The connection diagram in Figure 1 on page 7 includes an optional RJ-11 modular T adapter so the USB modem and a telephone can share the same telephone wall jac k. If you will not be sharing the wall jack, it is not necessary to install a T adapter .

16 4.0 SETTING UP AND USING MODEM-ON-HOLD The modem-on-hold f eature requires the f ollowing: • Inter net ser vice from an ISP that suppor ts V .92—V er ify that your ISP suppor ts V .92 MOH. Be sure to ask how long an Inter net call can be left on hold bef ore your Internet session will be disconnected.

18 3. Select what you w ant the modem to do when a phone call is receiv ed while you’ re online (see Figure 14 on page 17). 4. Click the OK button to sa ve changes and close the control panel. Selecting the country/area 1. Left mouse click on Star t > Settings > Control P anel > Modem Set- tings (see Figure 15).

Clic k on the Speaker tab (see Figure 17). Y ou can choose to enable your PC speak ers to play sounds representing activities of the modem.
20 2. Click on the Soft Speak er > Enabled bo x so a check mark appears. 3. Mov e the speaker v olume slider (see Figure 17 on page 19) to the desired setting. 4.2 CONNECTING AND LOGGING ONTO YOUR ISP Connect to your ISP as usual. After connecting, you will see an icon in the system tra y (see Figure 18), indicating that the modem is online.

22 Note Y our ISP controls how long the Internet connection can be on hold. 5. When your call is complete, clic k on the Resume my Internet Con- nection button (see Figure 20 on page 21). While your Internet connection is resuming, you will see the Resuming Y our Inter net Connection window (see Figure 21).

If you choose to ans wer the call, the Receiving Phone Call window changes to show the Remaining hold time timer (see Figure 23).
24 Note If you do not finish y our call bef ore the timer e xpires , y our v oice call will automatically be disconnected and you ma y also lose your Inter net connection. T o a v oid this, there are tw o w orkarounds: • Ask the person to whom you are speaking to hang up bef ore the timer e xpires and call you bac k in a minute .
25 5.0 DIAGNOSTICS 5.1 WINDOWS 98/ME 1. Select Star t > Settings >Control P anels . Then double-clic k on the Modems icon. 2. Click on the Diagnostics tab . 3. Select the COM P or t that the modem is using and click on the More Inf o… button to start the test.
