Doing so may damage the motherboard. 1.5.2 Placement direction When installing the motherboard, make sur e that you place it into the chassis in t he correct orientation. The edge with external ports goes to the rear part of t he chassis as indicated in the image below .

Locate the CPU socket on the motherboard. 1.6 Central Processing Unit (CPU) The motherboard comes with a surface mount LGA775 socket designed for the Intel ® Core™2 Extreme / Core™2 Duo / Pentium ® D / Pentium ® 4 / Celeron ® D Processors.

Lift the load plate with your thumb and forenger to a 100º angle (A), then push the PnP cap from the load plate window to remove (B). T o prevent damage to the socket pins, do not remove the PnP cap unless you are installing a CPU.
1-10 Chapter 1: Product Introduction The CPU ts in only one correct orientation. DO NOT force the CPU into the socket to prevent bending the connectors on the socket and damaging the CPU! 6. Close the load plate (A), then push the load lever (B) until it snaps into the retention tab.

1-12 Chapter 1: Product Introduction Do not forget to connect the CPU fan connector! Hardware monitoring errors can occur if you fail to plug this connector . 3. When the fan and heatsink assembly is in place, connect the CPU fan cable to the connector on the motherboard labeled CPU_F AN.
ASUS P5V -VM Ultra Motherboard 1-13 1.6.3 Uninstalling the CPU heatsink and fan T o uninstall the CPU heatsink and fan: 1. Disconnect the CPU fan cable from the connector on the motherboard.

ASUS P5V -VM Ultra Motherboard 1-15 1.7 System memory 1.7.1 Overview The motherboard comes with four Double Data Rate 2 (DDR2) Dual Inline Memory Modules (DIMM) sockets. A DDR2 module has the same physical dimensions as a DDR DIMM but has a 240-pin footprint compared to the 184-pin DDR DIMM.

2-2 Chapter 2: BIOS Information 2 . 1 M an a g i ng a nd U p da t i n g Y ou r B IO S The following utilities allow you to manage and update the motherboard Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) setup. 1. AFUDOS (Updates the BIOS in DOS mode using a bootable oppy disk.
ASUS P5V -VM Ultra Motherboard 2-3 2. The utility will copy the current system BIOS by default to the oppy disk. Make sure that the oppy disk is not write-protected and has enough space (at least 600KB) to store the le. The BIOS information on the screen is for reference only .
2-4 Chapter 2: BIOS Information 4. At the DOS prompt, type the command line: afudos /i[lename.rom] where [lename.rom] means the latest (or original) BIOS le that you copied to the bootable oppy disk. 5. Press <Enter>. The screen displays the status of the update process.

2-30 Chapter 2: BIOS Information 2.7 Exit menu The Exit menu items allow you to load the optimal or failsafe default values for the BIOS items, and save or discard your changes to the BIOS items. Pressing <Esc> does not immediately exit this menu.
