Before use 7 Outline of operations This unit is compatible with P2 (Prof essional Plug-in) cards. The P2 card has a large capacity with a high transf er rate, and allo ws you sophisticated movie-making on this handy camera, including HD (High Denition) recording and smooth editing/dubbing.
8 Precaution f or use Alwa ys take some trial shots before actual shooting. When shooting impor tant ev ents (such as weddings), alwa ys tak e some trial shots and check that the sound and images hav e been recorded properly before actual shooting. Be sure to check and set the calendar and time zone.

14 The battery Charging Before using the battery , fully charge it with the A C adapter . K eep a spare batter y with you. 1 Align the battery with the marking on the A C adapter , place it at, and slide it in the direction shown below .
Preparation 15 Installing and remo ving the power suppl y Installing and removing the battery Installation 1 Insert the batter y until it clic ks into place. Remov al 1 Set the PO WER switch to OFF , and chec k that the mode lamp is off. 2 While pressing the battery release button, raise up the battery to remove it.
16 Adjusting the hand strap Adjust the hand strap to suit your hand. 1 Open the cover and adjust the length. 2 Close the cover . Make sure the co ver is fully closed. • Attaching the shoulder strap Attach the shoulder strap and use it as a precaution against dropping the camera.
Preparation 17 The remote contr ol Insert the batter y 1 Push the catch in the direction shown b y arro w to remove the holder . 2 Insert the batter y with the “+” marked side facing up. 3 Return the holder to its original position. When the battery (CR2025) has r un out, replace it with a new one .
18 T urn on/off the camera While pressing the lock release , tur n the POWER switch. T urn on the camera: The mode lamp (CAM) lights red (CAM mode) and the camera is now in the shooting standb y mode. T urn off the camera: The mode lamp (CAM) goes out.
Preparation 19 Viewnder This camera has two vie wnders; one is a miniature LCD in the viewnder and the other is a retractable 3.5-inch LCD . Use the viewnder that best suits the application and shooting conditions.
20 Emphasizing outlines Emphasizing the outlines of the images you see in the viewnder or on the LCD mak es it easier to focus . Emphasizing the outlines does not effect the images you shoot. 1 In CAM mode, press EVF DTL. “EVF DTL ON” appears on the screen for about 2 seconds.
Preparation 21 Adjusting the screen display 1 Set the PO WER switch to ON. (P age 18) 2 Press the MENU button. For men u operation (P age 93) Y ou can also use the menu buttons on the remote control. (P age 13) 3 Viewnder adjustments Select YES under EVF SET on the setting menu DISPLA Y SETUP screen.
22 Adjusting the backlight The steps below show ho w to set the brightness of the LCD monitor to one of three possible le vels . 1 Select LCD BL under LCD on the setting menu SW MODE screen. This assigns LCD BL to the LCD button. 2 Press the LCD button.
Preparation 23 Setting the calendar The CLOCK SET value is recorded in the contents (clip), and affects the sequence of pla yback of the thumbnails. Before carrying out recording, be sure to check and set CLOCK SET and TIME ZONE. This shows y ou how to adjust the calendar to 5:20 PM on December 25, 2008.
24 Basic shooting operations Preparing to shoot 1 Set the PO WER switch to ON. (P age 18) 2 Lift up the viewnder , press the side of the card slot co ver ( A ), and slide the cover ( B ) to open it. 3 Insert the P2 card securely in the card slot. 4 Push the P2 card eject button to the direction of the arro w, and close the card slot cover .
Shooting 25 Checking photos taken (REC CHECK) In the shooting pause mode, press the REC CHECK button. This plays bac k about 2 seconds of the video and audio of the most recently recorded clip before returning to pause mode. Note that this REC CHECK por tion will also be recorded to any equipment y ou have set up to make bac kup recordings.

Shooting 27 Remove the P2 car d 1 Lift up the viewnder , press the side of the card slot co ver ( A ), and slide the cover ( B ) to open it. 2 Check that the P2 card access lamp is not blinking orange. 3 Raise the P2 card eject button and press it.
28 Using SD/SDHC memory cards Y ou can use SD and SDHC memor y cards (the term “SD memory card” is used f or both hereafter) to sav e and load SCENE les and USER les, and to upload clip meta data.

30 V ariab le frame rates (VFR) By taking full advantage of the special char acteristics of P2 cards, this unit provides frame skipping (undercranking) recording and highspeed (ov ercranking) recording, which are actually movie techniques , without the use of a frame rate con verter.
Shooting 31 Native recording 1 Using the REC FORMA T function (Pa ge 103) on the RECORDING SETUP screen, select 720P/25PN as the recording format. 2 Select the appropriate scene le using the SCENE FILE dial. If necessary , before doing this, perf orm the camera settings from the setting menu, and register the scene le.
32 Using variab le frame rates (VFR) Standard speed shooting f or making commercials and dramas When producing commercials and dramas to be shown on a TV screen, as in the case of HDTV/ SDTV and other broadcasts, a frame r ate of 25 fps (frames per second) is the norm (1x speed).
Shooting 33 Shooting in 1080i/576i pr ogressive mode Selecting 1080i/25P or 576i/25P in the REC FORMA T option (Page 103) of the setting menu RECORDING SETUP screen enables shooting in progressiv e mode. 25P mode: Shoot 25 frames a second in the progressiv e mode.
34 Shooting in manual mode Set the unit to manual mode when manually adjusting the focus , iris, gain and white balance. Switching to manual mode Slide the A UT O/MANU AL switch to MANU AL to switch to the man ual mode. ( A on the vie wnder and LCD go out).
Shooting 35 Using focus assist Pressing the FOCUS ASSIST button magnies the center por tion of the image or brings up a frequency distribution graph at the top right of the image to assist during manual focusing.
36 Adjusting the gain When the display is dark, increase the gain to brighten the display . GAIN switch 1 If the camera is in auto mode, use the A UT O/MANU AL switch to s witch to manual mode. (P age 34) 2 Switch the gain with the GAIN switch. L: Set here under nor mal conditions.
Shooting 37 Adjusting the white balance In order to reproduce the white accurately , adjust the ratio between the three RGB primary colors. If the white balance is not adjusted properly , not only will the white be reproduced poorly but the color tones of the entire screen will also be downgr aded.
38 Using presets Use this feature when y ou hav e no time to make white balance adjustments. 1 If the camera is in auto mode, use the A UT O/MANU AL switch to s witch to manual mode ( A on the viewnder and LCD goes out). 2 Set the WHITE BAL switch to PRST .
Shooting 39 Low-angle shooting Set the Recording enable/disab le switch to ON and use the ST ART/ST OP button on the handle to make it easier to shoot from lo w angles. Set the Recording enable/disab le switch to OFF to prev ent inadvertent use of the ST AR T/ST OP button on the handle when this function is not needed.
40 Checking and displa ying shooting status DISP/MODE CHK button When you hold do wn the DISP/MODE CHK button during recording standby or recording, all the information including the setting status of the shooting functions and a list of functions allocated to the USER buttons , will be display ed.
Shooting 41 Optical Image Stabilizer Use the Optical Image Stabilizer (OIS) to reduce the effects of camer a shake when shooting by hand. Press the OIS button to turn the function on and off. appears on the screen when this function is on. T ur n the function off when using a tripod for more natural images.
42 W avef orm monitor function Press the WFM button in CAM mode to displa y a wa vef orm of the image on the LCD monitor. Pressing the WFM button once again closes the wa vef orm display . WFM (P age 102) on the setting menu SW MODE screen allows y ou to switch between the wa vef orm and vector display .
Shooting 43 2-slot continuous recor ding If you insert two P2 cards into the two card slots, this function allows y ou to record continuously on the two cards. Y ou can also record continuously on three or more cards by replacing one card while data is being recorded on the other .
44 LAST CLIP DELETE function Assign LAST CLIP to any of the USER 1 – 3 buttons to enab le a conv enient wa y to delete the last recorded clip . Pressing the USER button to which LAST CLIP was assigned displa ys a YES/NO conrmation dialog on the screen.
Shooting 45 Pre-recording (PRE REC) This function is used to record pictures and sound star ting at a xed time (appro x. 3 seconds for HD recording or approx. 7 seconds for 576i recording) before the time when the actual recording has been set to star t.
46 All data recorded while this mode is active will be contained in one le. No guarantees are made f or the 1394 output images. Operation is not possible e v en if only one of the inser ted cards is DIR ENTR Y NG CARD .
Shooting 47 Use two P2 cards each with a recording capacity of more than one minute. Recording stops when either card is ejected. This function does not work during 1394 input recording. The pre-recording function does not work. Operation is not possible e v en if only one of the inser ted cards is DIR ENTR Y NG CARD .

Shooting 49 Synchr o scan Set the shutter speed of the synchro scan (used when shooting a television or computer monitor) in the setup menus, SCENE FILE screen, SYNCR O SCAN. (P age 97) Adjust the shutter speed to match the frequency of the television or computer monitor to minimiz e the horizontal noise that appears when shooting such subjects.
50 During shooting, you can record up to f our channels of sound. Y ou can also switch the input sound to be recorded on each of the channels to the built-in microphones , external microphones or audio equipment connected to camera.
Shooting 51 INPUT 2: Audio from a de vice connected to INPUT 2 terminal is recorded to channel 1. 5 Use the CH2 SELECT switch to select the input signal to be recorded to audio channel 2. INT (R): Audio from the b uilt-in microphone Rch is recorded to audio channel 2.
52 The settings according to the variety of shooting circumstances are stored in each position of scene le dial. When shooting, you can retrie ve the necessary le instantly using scene le dial. Scene le dial During recording, the OPERA TION TYPE and FRAME RA TE (Page 97) settings remain unchanged ev en when the scene le is changed.
Shooting 53 6 When the screen shown below appear s, use the Operation lever to enter a 6- character le name. Set the same as user information. (Page 60) Characters that can be set Space, A to Z, 0 to 9, : ; < = > ? @ [ ] ^_-.
54 Y ou can sav e up to four scene le settings or other settings as les on an SD memory card, and you can also load them from the card. The data in all the scene les, F1 to F6, is rewritten. Inser t the SD memory card into the unit. (P age 28) If you ha ve sa ved a scene le 1 Set the unit’ s PO WER switc h to ON.
Shooting 55 6 Press the MENU button f our times to cancel the menu mode. T o load a le 1) P erform steps 1 to 3, select READ in step 4 and push the Operation le ver . When reading is completed, READ OK appears. T o title a le 1) P erform steps 1 to 4.
56 Clip metadata Y ou can add the video and audio systems, name of the videographer , shooting location, text memos and other information to the video data you ha ve recorded on the P2 card.
Shooting 57 Counter display Y ou can display a counter that indicates ho w much time has elapsed during shooting or playbac k. 1 Press the COUNTER button. Each time you press the b utton, the display changes as follo ws. (Page 86) 0 : 00. 00 (CAM mode onl y) Counter value CLIP 0 : 00.
58 Recharging the b uilt-in battery The camera’ s internal batter y sav es the date and time. “ ” appears on the screen of the viewnder or LCD when the internal batter y is running low on charge. Do the follo wing to recharge it. Reset the date and time when fully recharged.
Shooting 59 Push the Operation le ver in the q direction to mov e to the next digit, then push it in the e or r direction to select a value . TC PRESET PUSH MENU TO RETURN MONTH +/– : PUSH q / g 1 0 h 0 0 m 0 0 s 0 0 f SEL : PUSH t / y Y ou can reset the time code to zero by pressing RESET on the camera or the remote control.
60 Setting user information Setting user information allows y ou to store 8-digit memo (information such as the date and time) in the hexagonal f ormat on the sub code track area. User information is automatically sav ed in the memory and retained after you tur n off the power .
Shooting 61 7 Push the Operation lever in the e direction to move to YES and press it again. UB PRESET PRESET OK? YES – – – PUSH STILL NO 8 Press MENU twice to exit the menus.
62 Basic pla yback operations SLOT SEL MODE CAM MCR PC POWER ON OFF 1 2 Lock release 1 T urn the PO WER switch to ON. While pressing the lock release , tur n the POWER s witch to ON. 2 Press the mode button so the MCR lamp turns on. The camera is now in the MCR mode .
Playbac k 63 Thumbnail screen Video data created on the P2 card in one shooting session is called a clip . When the MCR mode has been established, the clips will be displa yed on the LCD screen as thumbnails . (When there is a large number of clips, it will tak e some time for them to be displa yed on the screen.
64 1 Slot number display The number of the slot with the P2 card containing the clip indicated by the y ellow frame is shown here . (The number appears in yello w .) If a clip extends o ver the P2 cards in two slots, both n umbers will appear in yellow .
Playbac k 65 Adding shot marks to c lips Adding shot marks ( M ) will make it easier to nd the clips you are looking f or . 1 Push the Operation lever in the w or q direction to move the yello w frame to the clip to which y ou will add a shot mark.
66 Thumbnail operations Selecting the thumbnail display method (THUMBNAIL) Y ou can display the kind of clips y ou want to see as thumbnails. Y ou can also set more precisely how you w ant the thumbnails to appear on the screen. 1 On the thumbnail screen, press the MENU button.
Playbac k 67 D A TE FORMA T: Select year/month/da y (YMD), month/da y/ year (MD Y) or da y/month/year (DMY) as the order for displa ying the recording date/time. This format will be the same f or the recording date display ed by the clip properties and the recording date display ed by D A T A DISPLA Y .
68 DELETE: Select this to delete the selected clip . Select YES to delete the clip or NO to cancel the deletion, and press the Operation le ver . FORMA T : Select this to format a P2 card or SD memory card. When you mo ve to FORMA T , the card selection screen will appear .
Playbac k 69 SYSTEM INFO: The version of the system in this camer a is display ed. EXIT : Select this to return to the last screen. Pressing the DISP/MODE CHK button in a thumbnail screen displays the CLIP PR OPERTY screen. Press the button again to return to the thumbnail screen.
70 4 Card warning mark This mark is display ed when one of the follo wing warnings applies to a P2 card. 1) R UN DOWN CARD (P age 90) 2) DIR ENTR Y NG CARD (P age 90) The contents of the warning can be viewed by chec king the card information as described above .
Playbac k 71 Metadata of a clip with the incomplete clip indicator cannot be edited. T o edit metadata of a clip recorded in multiple P2 cards, insert all the P2 cards containing video data of the clip before star ting editing. If MEMO contains 100 or more characters, it cannot be edited.
72 Thumbnail operations (continued) PROPER TY : Select this to display the metadata which has been recorded in the unit. Push the Operation le ver in the e or r direction, select PROPER TY and push the Operation le ver to vie w the desired data. The Operation le ver also allows y ou to change the data.
Playbac k 73 V ariable speed search This function enables y ou to change the playbac k speed and search for specic scenes . 1 Press the Operation lever in the q (playbac k) direction during playback. On the remote control, press the V AR. SEARCH button.

76 Connecting external units (continued) Computer (non-linear editing/le transfer) When connecting a 1394 cable Attach the provided two f errite cores (length: 30 mm) to the both ends of the cable . After passing the cable as sho wn in the gure on the right, close the ferrite cores until the y click into place and lock.
Editing 77 When connecting the unit to an Apple Macintosh computer Connect the 1394 cable after turning on the power of the Apple Macintosh computer . Otherwise, the unit may not be mounted. The unit may not be recogniz ed after the Apple Macintosh computer has been placed in the hibernation state by its po wer-saving setting.

80 Y ou can edit the video data on P2 cards nonlinearly by connecting the unit to a computer used f or editing by means of a USB cab le (Windows) or 1394 cable (Apple Macintosh).* 1 (Connections : P age 76) *1 When the unit is connected to a computer with a 1394 cable , you can only read data from P2 cards but y ou cannot write data to P2 cards.
Editing 81 6 Proceed with nonlinear editing using y our computer . An icon for the P2 card contents appears as a remov able disk in My Computer of your computer . For further details, ref er to the instructions for your computer’ s editing software.
82 Use an HDD (hard disk drive) that has sufcient capacity to permit copying. Before cop ying the data, f ormat the hard disk drive so that it can be used by the unit. Bear in mind that this process will delete all the data on the drive. Connect the camera to an HDD using the 1394 cable .
Editing 83 T o check the HDD status The color of indicates the HDD status, as below . White: HDD is connected and can be used. Black: HDD is not connected. Red: Copy cannot be made to the HDD since it is incorrectly formatted, etc. When the color is red, correctly format the HDD at step 5 before cop ying data onto it.
84 W arnings HDD CAP A CITY FULL! There is not enough free memory on the HDD . T OO MANY P ARTITIONS! There are too many partitions. * 1 HDD DISCONNECTED! The HDD has been disconnected. CANNO T FORMA T! Initializing cannot be performed. T OO MANY T ARGETS! There are too many 1394 connection destinations.
Editing 85 Dubbing Digital input/output Y ou can perform dubbing with a high image quality by means of digital signals b y using a 1394 cable to connect this unit to a digital video unit equipped with a 1394 connector . 1 Connect the digital video equipment to this unit.

Displays 87 4 Backup unit displa ys The status of the backup unit connected to the 1394 connector is display ed here. Nothing is display ed if in the setup menus, O THER FUNCTIONS screen, 1394 CONTROL, y ou hav e selected “OFF”. 1394 * : Recording 1394 h : Recording standby 1394 : The backup unit cannot be controlled.
88 21 Focus control displa y Displays the f ocus control inf ormation with 99-00. In the auto focus mode , AF appears. In the manual f ocus mode, MF appears, and when MF ASSIST is set to ON on the setting menu SW MODE screen, MA appears. When the display is set to macro control, the b lack and white of AF or MF are display ed in rev erse.

90 W arnings COPY INHIBITED Can not record correctly because of the input signal copy-guarded. EXTERNAL1394 DISCONNECT When the 1394 CONTROL item of the O THER FUNCTIONS screen of the Setup menu is set to EXT and recording without connecting external units with 1394 terminal, this display appears.

94 Initializing the menu settings The menu settings contain both the user le settings and the scene le settings. Y ou can initialize them separately . T o initialize the user le (i.e . all the settings other than the scene le settings) Select INITIAL in USER FILE of the O THER FUNCTIONS screen.
