3 At a Glance INTRODUCTION Congratulations on your purchase of t he DataLocker DL3™ En crypted Hard Drive. This user manual is intended to help you configure your device . Because we are const antly updating our products, the images and text in t his manual may vary slightly from the images and text displayed by your DataLocker DL3™.
4 Alth ough the DataLocker DL3™ is ext remely user friendly, it is recommended that you review this guide to ensure that you become fully acquainted with the DataLocker DL3™ and all of its features. To register your product, please visit our website and fill out the on line form under the Support tab to complete the product registration.
5 ABOUT THE DL3 The DataLocker DL3™ has a m inimum power requirem ent of 5 Vol ts and 1A of current that is drawn from the USB port. The DataLo cker DL3™ utilizes 256 -bit AES encryption operating in XTS mode to fu ll y encrypt your drive’s contents.
6 Getting Started FIRST TIME SETUP This sec tion will guide you through the necess ary s t eps to se t up the DL3 drive f or the first time around. I t is highly recommended that you set a new administrator password using alphanumeric charact ers. Step 1: Connect the DL3 to your computer with t he included USB cable.
7 Step 6: Press the [CONTINUE] button, an d t hen en ter in the current password, which is 000000 . Pl ease follow the onscreen instruct ions to set your new password. It is recommended that you use a com bination of both al pha and numeric characters for your password.
8 After you press the [CONNECT] button on the DL3 drive, it will begin connecting to the com puter. By default, Windows will show an AutoPlay dialog once the drive has successfully connected. In Windows Explorer you wi ll now see a new drive call ed “Data Locker” listed in the Hard Disk Drives section.
9 ADMIN PASSWORD The process of cha nging t he Adm inistrator password is identical to the se tup process. I t is highl y recomm ended that you set a new administrator passw ord using alphanumeric characters. Step 1: Power o n your D L3 by pl ugging it in to your computer.
10 Step 5: Press t he [CONTINUE] button an d t hen en ter in the current password, which is 000000 . Please follow the onscreen ins tructions t o se t your new password. I t is recommended that yo u use a combination o f both alpha and numeric characters for your password.
11 USER PASSWORD The DL3 supports the creation of a user password. The user w ill have access to all data on the drive; however, the user w ill not be able to access c ertain administrative options and controls. Note: You must change the default adm inistrator password before creating a user password.
12 Step 5: Press t he [CREATE] butt on. A user with t he default password of 000000 is now created. Step 6: The user sh ould t hen re-l ogin with t he defaul t us er password of 000000 and change t he defaul t password to a personal password. The user password change process is identical to changi ng the a dministrator’s password.
13 MAIN SCREEN The connected status screen on your DL3 drive displays usefu l information. Indicates that the DL3 drive has a USER PASSWORD enabled. Indicates that the DL3 drive’s USER PASSWORD is disabled. Displays the current firmware installed on the DL3 drive.
14 DISCONNECTING YOUR DL3 One way to preve nt loss or corrupted data is to properl y eject the DL3 drive. I t is best practice to use your operating system’s Safely Remove Hardware or Eject function befor e you power dow n or de ta ch the D ataLocker DL3™ fr om the host system.

Language Set the menu language. Supported languages are: English French German Spanish Key Tone Turn the keypad tone ON or OFF.
19 SELF-DESTRUCT MODE The Self Des t ruct feature is designed to defend against brute force password hacks. The DL3 performs this by zeroizing all of the device ’ s encryption keys once the appointed number of failed login attempts is reached. Once the encrypt ion key is delet ed, your data is no longer recoverable.
20 4. After m any unsuccessful attempt s you w ill see the “Self Destruct Will Begin” warning. I f the next attempt fails, the Sel f Destruct func tio n will destroy all data o n the DL3 drive. This process is instantaneous and all data will be wiped.
21 Advanced RFID AUTHENTICATION The DL 3 features an optional RFID module for a 2 nd l ayer of authentication. A maximum of 3 RFID tags can be regis tered on each DL3 d rive. RFID models of the DL3 come with 2 RFI D tags. I f you would l ike to pair your own tag, the DL3 RFID module supports ISO 14443A and ISO 15693 with a frequency of 13.
22 Step 4: At the se tup menu press the [SYSTEM] button. Step 5: Press t he button to displ ay the [SYSTEM 2/2] screen. Step 6: At t he next menu screen, press the [RFID] button.
23 Step 9: After reg istering, the RFI D tag val ue w ill be displayed. Pl ease make note of the RFID tag I D incase the tag is lost or damaged. You have now successfull y registered a RFID tag and the RFID function is enabled.
24 VIRTUAL CD PARTITION The DL3 drive supports a feature call ed “Virtual CDs” or VCD. This allows the DL3 drive to em ulate a physical CD-ROM d rive using ISO images. A VCD is a drive partition, w hich is recognized b y your operating system as a physical Read Only drive with i ts own unique drive letter.
25 2 Select ISO Click the Select ISO bu tton to sel ect the ISO image you would l ike to upload to the DL3 drive. 3 Update Then cl ick the Update bu tton to upl oad the ISO image to the DL3 drive. This will finalize the steps to mo unt an I SO image on the DL3.
26 Troubleshoot FORGOTTEN PASSWORD Passwords are stored at the device l evel only, meaning t hat t here is NO way to retrieve a l ost or forgotten password.
27 INITIALIZING AND FORMATTIN G YOUR DL3 On occasion – for exam ple, after sel f-destructing your DL3 - you will need to initialize and reformat t he drive to make it usable again. How to Initialize your Drive 1 Touch start screen. 2. Press Yes . 3.
28 You wi ll now hav e t o form at y our d rive. The ins tructions t o f ormat yo ur drive will vary depending on your OS. W indo ws 1 Right click My Computer and press Manage 2 Then press Disk Manage.
29 7 Rename the volume label, and t hen press Next 8 Review, and then press Finish 9 The status of your formatted disk should be Healthy (Primary Partition) 10 Your DL3 should now appear under My Comp.
30 Mac 1 Go to Applications under your Finder. 2 Go to Utilities and then open Disk Utility . 3 Select your unformatted DL3 disk. 4 Rename your disk label.
31 5 Press Erase . 6 Your formatted DL3 should now appear under Devices . Click on the links for a video walkthrough on formatting your DL3. Format your DL3 - Windows Format your DL3 - Mac.
32 Miscellaneous LINUX COMPATIBILITY AND CONFIGURATION The DL3 is platform independent, capable of being run with 100% compatibility on most systems. For optimal Linux or Unix based system compat ibility, we recommend using at least the Linux 2.6.31 Kernel (released 9 September 2009), which implemented the xHC I specification for USB3.
33 Finally you'll use the mkfs command to format the disk for Linux. Here, we use ext4. # mkfs.ext4 /dev/sdb1 If you want to rename the drive, use the e2label command.
