13 En Speaker Configura tion The following table indicate s the channels you sh ould use depending on the number of speakers that you have. No matter how many speakers you use, 2 powered subwoofers are recommended for a really powerful and solid bass.
14 En About Speakers A and Speak ers B Installing Speakers A and Speakers B a llows you to enjoy up to 7.2-channel su rround-sound playback from each speaker configuration. Each configuration has it s o wn pair of stereo front speakers and can use the same subwoofer, center, surround, front high, and surround back speakers, as req uired.
15 En ■ 7.2-channel Playback with Spea kers A or Speakers B The following illustration shows how to connect the speakers for up to 7.2-ch annel playback with Speakers A or Speakers B. If you’re using only one surr ound back speaker, connect it to the SURR BACK/ZONE 3 L terminals.
16 En Using Powered Subwoofers To find the best position for your subwoofer, while playing a movie or some music with good bass, experiment by placing your subwoofer at various posi tions within the room, and choose the one that provides the most satisfying results.
17 En Connecting a Power Amplifier If you want to use a more powerful power amplifier, you can use the AV receiver as a preamp. Connect all speaker outputs to the power amplifie r. See the manuals supplied with your amplifier for details. Note *1 Specify “ None ” for any channel that you don’ t want to output ( ➔ page 52 ).
18 En Connecting AV componen ts • Before making any AV connections, read the manuals supplied with your AV components. • Don’t connect the power cord until you’ve completed and double-check ed all AV connections. • Push plugs in all the way to make good connect ions (loose connections can cause noise or malfunctions).
19 En Connect your components to the appropriate jacks. The default input assi gnments are shown below. ✔ : Assignment can be changed ( ➔ page 49 ).

Connecting Your Components The on-screen menus appear only on a TV tha t is connected to the HDMI OUT MAIN .
21 En Note *1 TX-NR5009 only . *2 Do not connect the AV re ceiver’s USB port to a USB port on yo ur computer. Music on your computer cannot be p layed through th e AV receiver in this way. *3 Connect a turntable (MM) that has a built-in phono preamp to TV/CD IN , or connect it to PHONO IN with the ph ono preamp tur ned off.
22 En With u (Remote Interactive) , you can use th e following special functions: ■ Auto Power On When you start playback on a component connected via u while the AV receiver is on Standby, the AV receiver will au tomatically turn on and selec t that component as the input source.
23 En This section explains how to connect the supplied indoor FM antenna and AM loop antenna. The AV receiver won’t pick up any radi o signals without any antenna connected, so you must c onnect the antenna to use the tuner.
24 En Turning On & Basic Operatio ns Turning On/Off the AV Receiver Tip • For details on power manage ment settings, see “Auto Standby” ( ➔ page 67 ). Turning On 1 (European and Asian models) Set % POWER to the ON position ( ^ ) on the front panel.

26 En Note • The buttons you can use will differ depending on the devices and media used for playback. This section describes icons that appear on the display during media playback. This section explains how to play music/video files on the iPod/iPhone.
27 En Extended Mode (Music) control The music content informati on is displayed (lists are displayed), and you can control the music content while looking at the screen. Top screen list: Playlists, Ar tists, Albums, Genres, Songs, Composers, Shuffle Songs, Now Playing.
28 En Listening to Other Internet Radio To listen to other internet radio stations , insert the following step after step 1 in the “Listening to vTuner Internet Radio” section. Registering My Favorit es *1 You can add the currently playing song or station to the “ My Favorites ”.
29 En This section explains how to play music files on a computer or media server through the AV receiver (Server Playback). Windows Media Player 11 Set up This section explains how to configure Windows Media Player 11 so that the AV recei ver can play the music files stored on your computer.
30 En Using Remote Playback Using the Tuner With the built-in tuner you can enjoy AM and FM radio stations. You can store your favor ite st ations as presets for quick selection.
31 En ■ Tuning into stations by frequenc y You can tune into AM and FM stations directly by entering the appropriate frequency. Presetting AM/F M Stations You can store a combination of up to 40 of your favorite AM/FM radio stations as presets. Note • You can name your radio presets fo r easy identification ( ➔ page 60 ).
32 En ■ Displaying Radio Te xt (RT) ■ Finding Stations by Type (PTY) You can search for ra dio stations by type. ■ Listening to Traffic News (TP) You can search for stations that broadcast traffic news. RDS progra m types (PTY ) 1 Press RT/PTY/TP once.
33 En Using Basic Functions With the supplied calibrated microphone, Audyssey MultEQ ® XT32 automatic ally determines the number of speakers connected, their size for purp oses of bass management, optimum cr ossover frequencies to the subwoofer (if present), and distances from the primary listening position.

39 En Dolby Pro Logic IIx *3 Dolby Pro Logi c II Dolby Pro Logic IIx expands any 2-chann el source for 7.1-channel playback. It provides a very natur al and seamless surround-so und experience that fully envelops the listener. As well as music and movies, video games can also benefit from the dramatic spatial effects and vivid imaging.
40 En DTS-ES Discrete *7 This mode is for use with DTS-ES Discr ete soundtracks, which use a discrete surround back ch annel for true 6.1/7.1-chann el playback. The seven totally separate audio channels pr ovide better spatia l imaging and 360- degree sound localization, perfect fo r sou nds that pan across the surround channels.
41 En THX Founded by George Lucas, THX develo ps stringent standard s that ensur e movies are reproduced in movie theaters and home theaters just as the director intended. THX Modes carefu lly optimize the tonal and spatial characteristics of the soundtrack fo r reproduction in the home-theater environment.
42 En Note *1 Pure Audio cannot be selected when Zone 2 is active. Besides, if you activate Zone 2 while Pur e Audio is select ed, the listening mode will au tomatically switch to D irect. *2 Based on the audio channel signal contained in the sour ce, the corres ponding speakers will output the sound.
43 En The Home menu provides you quick access to frequently used menus without having to go th rough the long standard menu. This menu enab les you to change settings and view the current information. Note *1 For the PORT input selector, the name of Universal Port Option Dock will be displayed.
44 En You can adjust the bright ness of the AV receiver’s display. You can display various info rmation abo ut the current input source as follows. (Components connected to the UNIVERSAL PORT jack are excluded.) The following information ca n typically be displayed.
45 En You can set which speakers you want to use by prior ity. You can temporar ily mute the output of the AV receiver. Selecting Speaker La yout 1 Press RECEIVER followed by SP LAYOUT repeatedly to select: ■ 9.2 ch playback ` Speaker Layout:SB/FH : The sounds from surround back and f ront high speakers are output by priority.
46 En By using ACTIVITIES in Easy macro mode, you can sequentially operate Onkyo components via simple commands from a single-butt on press. These commands are user-definable. See “Using Normal Macros” ( ➔ page 84 ). ■ MY MOVIE First, the TV, the Onkyo Blu-ray Disc player, and the AV receiver are turned on.
47 En Advanced Op erations Advanced Setup The on-screen setup menus a ppear on the connected TV and provide a convenient way to change the AV receiver’s various settings. Sett ings are organized into 9 categories on the main menu . Carry out the settings by u sing the on-screen display.
48 En Main Menu Input/Output Assig n Monitor Out On the “ Monitor O ut ” settings, you can select whether or not to hav e the video sources’ images output through the HDMI output.
49 En Tip •T h e “ Resolution ” setting is set respectively of main, sub, and analog. • To view the TV picture while setting, press ENTER . Note • Depending on the incomi ng video signal, the video playback may not be smooth or the vertical resolutio n may be lowered.
50 En Component Video Input If you connect a video component to a component video input, you must assign that input to an input selector. For example, if you connect your Blu-ray Disc/DVD player to COMPONENT VIDEO IN 2 , you must assign “ IN2 ” to the “ BD/DVD ” input selecto r.
51 En Note • To listen to the component connect ed to the multichannel input, make the selection in the “ Audio Selector ” ( ➔ pa ge 63 ). ■ Subwoofer Input Sensitivity ` 0dB to 15dB in 5 dB steps. Some DVD players output the LFE channel from their analog subwoofer output at 15 dB higher than normal.
52 En Speaker Configur ation With these settings, you can specify which speakers are connected and a crossover frequency for each speaker. Y ou ca n set the crossover fr equencies, di stances, and le vels of the front sp eakers A and front speak ers B independently .
53 En ■ Subwoofer Phase ` 0 º ` 180 º: Mov es the subw oofer phase. Note •I f t h e “ Subwoofer ” setting is set to “ No ”, this setting cannot be selected. ■ Wireless Subw oofer ` Yes : The audio is output from th e speakers connected to the wireless unit.
54 En Level Calibrat ion Here you can adjust the level of each speaker with the built-in test tone so that the volume of each speaker is the same at the listening position. You can set the levels of front speakers A and front speakers B independently.
55 En ■ THX Ultra2/Select2 Subwoofer ` No ` Yes If you’re using a THX-certifie d subwoofer, set this setting to “ Yes ”. Note •I f t h e “ Subwoofer ” setting is set to “ No ”, this setting cannot be selected ( ➔ page 52 ).
56 En Dimension ` –3 to 0 to +3 With this setting, you can m ove the sound field forward or backward when using the Dolby Pro Logic IIx Music listening mode.
57 En DTS ■ Neo:X Music Center Im age ` 0 to 2 to 5 The DTS Neo:X Music listening mode creates 9-channel surround sound from 2-channel st ereo sources. With this setting, you can specify by how much the front left and right channel output is attenuated in order to create the center channel.
58 En Sound Program Edit ■ Sound Program ` Stereo Sour ce 1 , Stereo Sourc e 2 , Stereo Source 3 , Multich So urce 1 , Multich Source 2 , Multi ch Source 3 When playing back different content types .
59 En ■ Dynamic E Q ` Off ` On : Audyssey Dynamic EQ ® becomes active. The Dynamic EQ indicator lights. With Audyssey Dynamic EQ, you can enjoy great sound even when listening at low volu me levels.
60 En IntelliVolume ■ IntelliVolume ` –12dB to 0dB to +12dB in 1 dB steps. With IntelliVolume, you can se t the input level for each input selector indivi dually. This is useful if one of your source components is louder or quieter than the others.
61 En Picture Adjust Using Picture Adjust, you can adjust the picture quality and reduce any noi se appearing on the screen. To view the T V picture while se tting, press ENTER . To return to the previous screen, press RE TURN . ■ Wide Mode *1* 2 This setting determ ines the aspect ratio.
62 En ■ Mosquito NR * 3*5*6*7 ` Off ` Low ` Mid ` High With Mosquito Noise Reduction, you can remove the shimmering or haziness th at sometimes appears around objects in the picture. Mosquito noise can be an issue with overly compressed MPEG content.
63 En Note •“ Pictur e Adjust ” cannot be used with the NET input selector. *1 This procedure can also be perf ormed on the remote controller by using the Home menu ( ➔ page 43 ). *2 When a 3D video source is input, “ Wide Mode ” is fixed to “ Full ”.
64 En Note • This setting cannot be selected when: – the UP-A1 Dock with docked iP od/iPhone is not connected to the AV receiver, or – the docked iPod/iPhone model is not suppor ted.
65 En ■ Power On Volume ` Last , Min , 1 to 99 or Max (Absolute display) ` Last , – Q dB , –81dB to +18dB (Relative display) With this preference, you can specify the vo lume setting to be used each time the AV receiver is turned on. To use the same volum e level that was used wh en the AV receiver was turned off, select “ Last ”.
66 En HDMI ■ HDMI Control(RIHD) ` Off ` On Turn this setting on to allow p -compatible components connected via HDMI to be controlled by the AV receiver ( ➔ page 97 ). Note • When the setting is set to “ On ” and the me nu is closed, the names of connected p -compatible components and “ RIHD On ” are displayed on the AV receiver.
67 En ■ Audio Return Chan nel ` Off ` Auto : The audio signal from your TV tuner can be sent to the HDMI OUT MAIN of the AV receiver. The audio return channel (ARC) function allows an ARC capable TV to send th e audio stream to the HDMI OUT MAIN of the AV receiver.
68 En ■ Proxy URL To use a Web proxy, enter its URL here. ■ Proxy Port If you’re using a Web proxy, enter a proxy port number here. ■ Network Control ` Enable ` Disable This setting enab les or disabl es control o ver the network.
69 En With this preference, you can protect your settings by locking the setup menus. Main menu Lock Setup ■ Setup ` Locked ` Unlocked When “ Locked ” is selected, the se tup menus will be locked and you cannot change any setting. You can change various audi o settings from the Home menu ( ➔ page 43 ).
70 En Dolby Volume ■ Dolby Volume See “Dolby Volume ” of “Audio Adjust ” ( ➔ page 56 ). Note • This setting cannot be used in either of the following cases: – Pure Audio or Direct listeni ng mode is selected. – the multichannel analog input is selected.
71 En Re-EQ With the Re-EQ function, you can compensate a soundtrack whose high-frequenc y content is too harsh, making it more suitable for home theater viewing.
72 En Multi Zone In addition to the main listening room, you ca n also enjoy playback in the other room , or as we call Multi Z one. And, you can select a different source for each room. There are two ways you can connect Zone speakers: 1. Connect them directly to the AV receiver.
73 En Zone 2 Video Output The A V recei ver features a composite video output for connection to a TV in Zone 2, so you can enjoy both audio and video in that zone. Note •T h e ZONE 2 OUT V jack outputs v ideo from components con- nected to composite video only .
74 En Adjusting the Volume for Zones ■ Operating on the rem ote controller ■ Operating on the AV receiver If your Zone 2/3 speakers are c onnected to a receiver or integrated amp in Zone 2/3, use its volume control to adjust the volum e. Muting Zones ■ Operating on the rem ote controller Tip • To unmute, press ZONE followed by MUTING again.
75 En To control the AV receiver with the remote con troller while you’re in Zone, you’ll need a commercially available m ultiroom remote control kit for each zone.
76 En Controlling Other Components iPod/iPhone Playback via Onkyo Dock UP-A1 Dock With the UP-A1 Dock, you can easily play the mu sic, photos, or movies stored on y our Apple iPod/iPhone through the AV receiver and enjoy great sound. You can use the AV receiver’s remote controller to operate your iPod/iPhone.
77 En ■ Status Messages If either of the following me ssages is not displayed on the AV receiver’s display, check the connection to your iPod/iPhone. • P ORT Reading The AV receiver is checking the connection with the dock. • P ORT Not Support The AV receiver do not support the connected dock.
78 En ✔ : Available buttons • With some iPod/iPhone models, generations and RI Docks, certain buttons ma y not work as expected. • For detailed operation of iPod/iPhone, please refe r to the instruction manual of the RI Dock. *1 This button does not tur n the Onkyo DS-A2 or DS-A2X RI Dock on or off.
79 En Controlling Other Components You can use the AV receiver’s remote controller to control your other AV compone nts, including those made by other manufacturers. Th is section explai ns how to enter the remote control code for a compon ent that you want to control: DVD, TV, CD , etc.
80 En You’ll need to enter a code for each component that you want to control. Note • Though the provid ed remote cont rol codes are correct at the time of printing, they are subject to change. 12 When you searched for th e model, a message “Successful” will appear .
81 En Onkyo components that are connected via u are controlled by pointing the re m ote controller at the AV receiver, not the component. This allows you to control components that are out of view, in a rack, for example.
82 En Note • With some components, certain buttons may not work as expected, and some may not work at all. ✔ : Available buttons *1 When you press 8 SOURCE , the related component is turned on (or of f). *2 The p function is not su pported. The p supported by the AV receiver is the CEC system control function of the HDMI standard.
83 En The AV receiver’s remote controller ca n learn the commands of other remote con trollers. By transmitting, for example, the Play command from your CD player’s remote controller, th e supplied remote controller can learn it, and then reproduce the ex act same command when its 1 is pressed in CD remote mode.
84 En You can program the re mote controller’s ACTIVITIES to perform a sequence of remote control actions. Example: To play a CD you typically ne ed to perform the following actions: 1. Press RECEIVER to sele ct the Receive r remote controller mode.

91 En Firmware Update To update the firmware of the AV receiver, you can choose from the following two methods: update via network, or update via USB storage. Choose the one that best suits your environment. Before proceeding with the update, please read the co rresponding explanations carefully.
92 En Troubleshooting Case 1: If “ No Update ” is displayed on the front display of the AV receiver, it m eans that th e firmware has already been updated. You do not need to do anything further . Case 2: If an error occurs, “ Error!! *-** ” is displayed on the front display of the AV receiver.

94 En Connection Tips and Video Signal Path The AV receiver supports seve ral connection formats for compatibility with a wide range of AV equipment. The format you choose will depend on the formats supported by your com ponents. Use the followi ng sections as a guide.
95 En ■ “Monitor Out” set to “Anal og” Video input signals flow through the AV receiver as shown, with composite video, S-Vide o, and PC IN (Analog RGB) sources being upconverted for the component video output. Use this setting if you co nnect the AV receiver’s COMPONENT VIDEO MONITOR OUT to your TV.

97 En Using an RIHD-compatible TV, Player, or Recorder p , which stands for Remote Interact ive over HDMI, is the name of the sy stem control function found on Onkyo components. The AV receiver ca n be used with CEC (Consum er Electronics Co ntrol), which al lows system control over HDMI and is part of the HDMI standa rd.
98 En ■ How to connect and setup 1 Confirm the connecting and setting. 1. Connect the HDMI OUT MAIN jack to the HDMI input jack of the TV. 2. Connect the audio output from the TV to the OPTICAL IN 2 jack of the AV receiver using an optical digita l cable.
99 En About HDMI Designed to meet the increased demand s of digital TV, HDMI (Hi gh Definition Multimedia Inte rface) is a new digital interface standard for connecting TVs, projectors, Blu-ray Disc/DVD player s, set-top boxes, and other video components.
100 En Network/USB Features The following diagram show s how you can connect the AV receiver to your home networ k. In this example, it’s connected to a LAN port on a router, which has a 4-port 100Base-TX switch built-in. ■ Ethernet Network For the best results, a 100B ase-TX switched Ethernet network is recommended.
101 En ■ Server playback The AV receiver can play digi tal music files stored on a computer or media server and supports the following technologies: • Windows Media Player 11 • Windows Media Player 12 • Windows Media Connect 2.
102 En For server playback and playback fr om a USB device, the AV receiver supports the following music file formats. Variable bit-rate (VBR) f iles are supported. However, playback time may not be display correctly. Note • With remote playback, the AV receiver does not support the following music file formats: FLAC and Ogg Vorbis.
