B ST ANDBY indicator (37) This indicator lights up when the A V receiv er is in Standby mode, and it flashes while a signal is being receiv ed from the remote controller .

11 Speaker P ac kage A Speaker terminals These push terminals are for connecting the speaker to the HT -R340 with the supplied speaker cables. The supplied speaker cables are color -coded for easy identification. Simply connect each cable to the same-colored positiv e speaker terminal.
12 Remote Contr oller Including the A V receiv er, the remote controller can be used to control up to six different components. The remote controller has a specific operating mode for use with each type of component. Modes are selected by using the five REMO TE MODE buttons.

18 Remote Controller —Continued T APE mode is used to control an Onkyo cassette recorder connected to the A V receiv er via . To set the remote contr oller to T APE mode, press the [RECEIVER] REMO TE MODE button. For twin cassette decks, only deck B can be controlled.
19 Bef ore Using the A V receiver Some models hav e a voltage selector switch for compat- ibility with power systems around the w orld. Before you plug in this model, make sure that the v oltage selector is set to the correct voltage for your area. If it isn’ t, use a small screwdri ver to set it as appropriate.
20 Enjo ying Home Theater Y ou can use tw o sets of speakers with the A V recei ver: speak er set A and speak er set B . Speaker set A should be used in your main listening room for up to 5.1-channel playback. *While speaker set B is on, speaker set A is reduced to 2.
21 Connecting Y our Speaker s Read the following before connecting your speak ers: •Y ou can connect speakers with an impedance of 6 ohms or higher . If you use speakers with a lo wer impedance, and use the amplifier at high volume le v- els for a long period of time, the built-in protection circuit may be activ ated.
22 Connecting Y our Speakers —Continued The speakers can easily be wall mounted by using the ke yhole slots. T o pre vent the speaker from vibrating against the wall, attach two of the supplied thick rubber stoppers to the rear of each speaker .
23 Connecting Y our Speakers —Continued We recommend using the provided rubber stoppers to achiev e the best possible sound from your speakers. The rubber stoppers prev ent the speakers from moving, pro- viding a more stable platform. Use thick stoppers for the center speaker , and thin stoppers for the other speakers.
24 Connecting Antenna This section explains ho w to connect the supplied indoor FM antenna and AM loop antenna, and how to connect commercially av ailable outdoor FM and AM antennas. The A V receiv er won’ t pick up any radio signals without any antenna connected, so you must connect the antenna to use the tuner .
25 Connecting Antenna —Continued If you cannot achiev e good reception with the supplied indoor FM antenna, try a commercially av ailable out- door FM antenna instead. Notes: • Outdoor FM antennas work best outside, b ut usable results can sometimes be obtained when installed in an attic or loft.
26 Connecting Y our Components • Before making any A V connections, read the manuals supplied with your other A V components. • Don’t connect the po wer cord until you’ ve completed and double-checked all A V connections.
27 Connecting Y our Components —Continued By connecting both the audio and video outputs of your D VD player and other A V components to the A V receiver, you can select both the audio and video simultaneously simply by selecting the appropriate input source on the A V receiv er.

38 Fir st Time Setup To enjoy Dolby Digital and DTS, you must connect your D VD player to the A V recei ver by using a digital audio connection (coaxial or optical). Here are the default assignments. W ith this function, you can assign digital inputs to input sources.

40 Playing Y our A V Components —Continued The multichannel input is for connecting a component with individual 5.1-channel analog audio output jacks, such as a D VD player or MPEG decoder .
41 Using the T uner W ith the built-in tuner , you can enjoy AM and FM radio stations. Y ou can store your f av orite stations as presets for quick selection. AM Frequency Step Setup (not North America and Europe) Here you can specify the AM frequency step used in your area.
42 Using the T uner —Continued Presetting Radio Stations Y ou can store up to 30 of your f av orite radio stations as presets. Selecting Preset Stations Deleting Presets Displaying Radio Inf ormation 1 T une into the station that you want to store as a preset.
43 Using the T uner —Continued Using RDS (European models onl y) RDS only works with European models and only in areas where RDS broadcasts are av ailable. When tuned into an RDS station, the RDS indicator appears. ■ What is RDS? RDS stands for Radio Data System and is a method of transmitting data in FM radio signals.
44 Using the T uner —Continued Displaying Radio T ext (R T) When tuned to an RDS station that’ s broadcasting R T text information, that information can be displayed. Notes: • The message “W aiting” may appear while the A V receiv er waits for R T information.
45 Common Functions This chapter explains functions that can be used with an y input source. Y ou can connect a pair of stereo headphones (1/4-inch phone plug) to the A V receiv er’ s PHONES jack for pri- vate listening, as sho wn. Notes: •A lw ays turn down the v olume before connecting your headphones.
46 Common Functions —Continued W ith this function, you can temporarily mute the output of the A V receiv er. To unmute the A V receiver, press the remote control- ler’ s [MUTING] button again, or adjust the v olume. The output is unmuted and the MUTING indicator goes off.
47 Common Functions —Continued Y ou can adjust the le vel of each speaker in speaker set A while listening to an input source. These temporary adjustments are cancelled when the A V receiv er is set to Standby . Notes: •Y ou cannot use this function while the A V receiv er is muted.
48 Recor ding This chapter explains ho w to record the selected input source to an A V component with recording capability , and how to record audio and video from tw o different sources. Y ou can record only to A V components that are con- nected to the T APE OUT or VIDEO 1 OUT jacks.
49 Using the Listening Modes See “ About the Listening Modes” on page 50 for detailed information about the listening modes. ■ [STEREO] button This button selects the Stereo listening mode. ■ [SURROUND] b utton (remote controller only) This button selects the Dolby Digital and DTS listen- ing modes.
50 Using the Listening Modes —Continued About the Listening Modes W ith its built-in surround-sound decoders and DSP pro- grams, the A V receiv er can transform your home listen- ing room into a movie theater or concert hall. Direct The selected input source is output directly with minimal processing for a pure sound.
51 Adjusting the Listening Modes Some functions are not av ailable with all speaker config- urations. Audio Adjust provides v arious functions for adjusting the sound. The Audio Adjust functions are explained belo w . Input Channel Settings ■ Multiplex This setting determines which channel is output from a stereo multiplex source.
52 Adjusting the Listening Modes —Continued PLII Music Mode Settings These settings apply to only 2-channel (stereo) sources. ■ P anorama W ith this function, you can broaden the width of the front stereo image when using the Pro Logic II Music listening mode.
53 Ad v anced Setup Speaker Distance To get the best from surround sound, it’ s important that the sound from each speaker reaches the listener at the same time. T o achie ve this, you need to specify the dis- tance from each speaker to the listening position.
54 Adv anced Setup —Continued Speaker Levels W ith this function, you can adjust the volume of each speaker so that all speakers can be heard equally at the listening position.
55 Adv anced Setup —Continued Speaker Configuration This section explains ho w to specify your speaker con- figuration. For speakers with a cone diameter larger than 6-1/2 inches (16 cm), specify Large (full band) . For those with a smaller diameter , specify Small (default crossov er 100 Hz) .
56 Adv anced Setup —Continued Crosso ver Frequency This setting only applies to the speakers that you speci- fied as Small in the “Speaker Configuration” on page 55. To get the best bass performance from your speaker sys- tem, you need to set the crossov er frequency according to the size and frequency response of your speakers.
57 Adv anced Setup —Continued The following table sho ws the display indicators for each supported digital signal format. Normally , the A V recei ver detects the signal format auto- matically .
58 Tr oubleshooting If you hav e any trouble using the A V receiver, look for a solution in this section. Can’t turn on the A V receiver? • Make sure that the po wer cord is properly plugged into the wall outlet. • Unplug the power cord from the w all outlet, wait five seconds or more, then plug it in again.
59 Tr oubleshooting —Continued The subwoof er produces no sound? • The subwoofer outputs no sound while only speaker set B is on. T urn on speaker set A. • When you play source material that contains no infor- mation in the LFE channel, the subwoofer produces no sound.
60 Tr oubleshooting —Continued The remote controller doesn’t w ork? • Make sure that the batteries are installed with the cor - rect polarity (page 19).
61 Tr oubleshooting —Continued The A V receiver contains a microcomputer f or signal processing and control functions. In very rare situa- tions, se vere interf erence, noise from an e xter nal source, or static electricity may cause it to loc kup.
