3 Precautions 1. Recording Copyright —Unless it’ s for personal use only , recording copyrighted material is illegal with- out the permission of the copyright holder . 2. A C Fuse —The A C fuse inside the unit is not user- serviceable. If you cannot turn on the unit, contact your Onkyo dealer .
4 Precautions —Continued Memory Backup The A V receiver uses a battery-less memory backup system in order to retain radio presets and other settings when it’ s unplugged or in the case of a power f ailure. Although no batteries are required, the A V receiver must be plugged into an A C outlet in order to charge the backup system.

12 Remote Contr oller Including the A V receiver, the remote controller can be used to control up to six different components. The remote controller has a specific operating mode for use with each type of component. Modes are selected by using the five REMO TE MODE buttons.

19 Bef ore Using the A V receiver Notes: • If the remote controller doesn’t w ork reliably , try replacing the batteries. • Don’t mix ne w and old batteries or different types of batteries. • If you intend not to use the remote controller for a long time, remov e the batteries to prev ent damage from leakage or corrosion.
20 Enjo ying Home Theater Y ou can use two sets of speakers with the A V receiv er: speak er set A and speak er set B . Speaker set A should be used in your main listening room for up to 5.1-channel playback. *While speaker set B is on, speaker set A is reduced to 2.
21 Connecting Y our Speakers F or the best surround-sound e xperience, you should con- nect five speakers and a po wered subwoofer . The following table sho ws which channels you should use based on the number of speakers that you ha ve.
22 Connecting Y our Speakers —Continued Using a suitable cable, connect the A V receiver’ s SUB- WOOFER PRE OUT to an input on your po wered sub- woofer , as shown. Note: Make sure the cable is plugged all the way . The following illustration sho ws which speaker should be connected to each pair of terminals.
23 Connecting Y our Speakers —Continued The speakers can easily be wall mounted by using the ke yhole slots. T o prevent the speak er from vibrating against the wall, attach two of the supplied thick rubber stoppers to the rear of each speaker .
24 Connecting Antenna This section explains ho w to connect the supplied indoor FM antenna and AM loop antenna, and how to connect commercially av ailable outdoor FM and AM antennas. The A V receiver w on’t pick up an y radio signals without any antenna connected, so you must connect the antenna to use the tuner .
25 Connecting Antenna —Continued If you cannot achiev e good reception with the supplied indoor FM antenna, try a commercially av ailable out- door FM antenna instead. Notes: • Outdoor FM antennas work best outside, b ut usable results can sometimes be obtained when installed in an attic or loft.
26 Connecting Y our Components • Before making any A V connections, read the manuals supplied with your other A V components. • Don’t connect the po wer cord until you’ ve completed and double-checked all A V connections.

33 Connecting Y our Components —Continued ■ CD Play er or T urntable with Built-in Phono Preamp ■ T urntable (MM) with no Phono Preamp Built-in A phono preamp is necessary to connect a turntable that doesn’t ha ve a phono preamp built-in.
34 Connecting Y our Components —Continued 1. Using the A V cable supplied with the DS-A1XP RI Dock, connect the RI Dock’ s A UDIO OUT L/R jacks to the A V receiver’ s VIDEO 3 IN L/R jack or T APE IN L/R jacks. 2. Using the supplied cable, connect the RI Dock’ s jack to an jack on the A V receiver.
35 Connecting Y our Components —Continued W ith (Remote Interactive), you can use the follo wing special functions: ■ A uto P ower On/Standby When you start playback on a component connected via , if the A V receiver is on Standby , it will automatically turn on and select that component as the input source.

37 Fir st Time Setup To enjoy Dolby Digital and DTS, you must connect your D VD player to the A V receiv er by using a digital audio connection (coaxial or optical). Here are the default assignments. W ith this function, you can assign digital inputs to input sources.
38 First Time Setup —Continued This section explains ho w to specify your speaker con- figuration. For speakers with a cone diameter larger than 6-1/2 inches (16 cm), specify Large (full band) . For those with a smaller diameter , specify Small (default crossov er 100 Hz) .

45 DS-A1XP RI Dock f or the iP od —Continued ■ Adjusting the iP od Adapter The iPod adapter needs to be adjusted to match your par - ticular iPod. If there’ s a gap between the back of your iPod and the adapter , turn the adapter counterclockwise to close the gap.
46 Common Functions This chapter explains functions that can be used with an y input source. Y ou can connect a pair of stereo headphones (1/4-inch phone plug) to the A V receiver’ s PHONES jack for pri- vate listening, as sho wn. Notes: •A lw ays turn down the v olume before connecting your headphones.
47 Common Functions —Continued W ith this function, you can temporarily mute the output of the A V receiver. To unmute the A V r eceiver, press the remote control- ler’ s [MUTING] button again, or adjust the v olume. The output is unmuted and the MUTING indicator goes off.
48 Common Functions —Continued Y ou can adjust the lev el of each speaker in speaker set A while listening to an input source. These temporary adjustments are cancelled when the A V receiver is set to Standby . Notes: •Y ou cannot use this function while the A V receiver is muted.

50 Using the Listening Modes —Continued About the Listening Modes W ith its built-in surround-sound decoders and DSP pro- grams, the A V receiver can transform your home listen- ing room into a movie theater or concert hall. Direct The selected input source is output directly with minimal processing for a pure sound.

52 Adjusting the Listening Modes Some functions are not av ailable with all speaker config- urations. Audio Adjust provides v arious functions for adjusting the sound. The Audio Adjust functions are explained belo w . Input Channel Settings ■ Multiplex This setting determines which channel is output from a stereo multiplex source.
53 Adjusting the Listening Modes —Continued PL II Music Mode Settings These settings apply to only 2-channel (stereo) sources. ■ P anorama W ith this function, you can broaden the width of the front stereo image when using the Pro Logic II Music listening mode.
54 Recor ding This chapter explains ho w to record the selected input source to an A V component with recording capability , and how to record audio and video from tw o different sources. Y ou can record only to A V components that are con- nected to the T APE OUT or VIDEO 1 OUT jacks.
55 Ad v anced Setup Crosso ver Frequency This setting only applies to the speakers that you speci- fied as Small in the “Speaker Configuration” on page 38. To get the best bass performance from your speaker sys- tem, you need to set the crossov er frequency according to the size and frequency response of your speakers.
56 Adv anced Setup —Continued Speaker Distance To get the best from surround sound, it’ s important that the sound from each speaker reaches the listener at the same time. T o achieve this, you need to specify the dis- tance from each speaker to the listening position.
57 Adv anced Setup —Continued Note: •A quicker way to adjust the speak er lev els is to press the remote controller’ s [TEST T ONE] button to output the test tone, use the [LEVEL–] and [LEVEL+] but- tons to adjust the lev els, and use the [CH SEL] button to select the speakers.
58 Adv anced Setup —Continued When using progressiv e scanning on your DVD player , you may find that the picture and sound are out of sync. W ith this setting, you can correct this by delaying the audio signals. Y ou can set it to 0, 20, or 40 milliseconds.
59 Tr oubleshooting If you hav e any trouble using the A V recei ver, look for a solution in this section. Can’t turn on the A V receiver? • Make sure that the po wer cord is properly plugged into the wall outlet. • Unplug the power cord from the w all outlet, wait five seconds or more, then plug it in again.
60 Tr oubleshooting —Continued • On the A V receiver, the subw oofer setting in the speaker configuration is set to No. Set the subwoofer setting to Y es. There’ s no sound with a certain signal format? • Check the digital audio output setting on the con- nected device.
61 Tr oubleshooting —Continued There’ s no sound • Make sure your iPod is actually playing. • Make sure your iPod is inserted properly in the RI Dock. • Make sure the RI Dock is connected to the correct input jacks on the A V receiver. Do not connect it to any output jacks.
