3 Precautions 1. Recording Copyright Unless it ’ s for personal use only , recording copyrighted material is illegal without the permission of the cop y- right holder . 2. A C Fuse The AC fuse inside the CR-505 is not user -serviceable. If you cannot turn on the CR-505, contact your Onkyo dealer .
4 Precautions— Continued Memory backup The CR-505 uses a battery-less memory backup system in order to retain radio presets and other settings when it ’ s unplugged or in case of a power f ailure. Although no batter - ies are required, the CR-505 must be plugged into an AC outlet in order to charge the backup system.

7 Bef ore Using the CR-505 1 Open the battery compar tment, as shown. 2 Insert the two supplied batteries (AAA/ R03) in accordance with the polarity dia- gram inside the battery compar tment. 3 Close the battery compar tment. Notes: • The supplied batteries should last for about six months, although this will vary with usage.

11 Connecting Y our Speakers Before you connect your speakers, read the follo wing: • Disconnect the power cord from the w all outlet. • Read the instructions supplied with your speakers.
12 Connecting an Antenna This chapter explains ho w to connect the supplied indoor FM antenna and AM loop antenna and how to connect com- mercially av ailable outdoor FM and AM antennas. The CD Receiv er won ’ t pick up any radio signals without any antenna connected, so you must connect an antenna to use the tuner .
13 Connecting an Antenna — Contin ued If you cannot achiev e good reception with the supplied indoor FM antenna, try using a commercially av ailable out- door FM antenna instead. Notes: • Outdoor FM antennas work best outside, b ut usable results can sometimes be obtained when installed in an attic or loft.

15 Connecting -compatible Components W ith (Remote Interactiv e) you can control your - compatible Onkyo cassette tape deck or MD recorder with the CR-505 ’ s remote controller, and use the follo wi.
16 P owering Up and Setting the Cloc k Before connecting the power cord, complete all connections (see pages 11 to 15). 1 Connect the power cor d to a suitable wall outlet. The CR-505 enters Standby mode, and the Standby indicator comes on. 2 T o turn on the CR-505, press the [ST ANDBY/ON] button.
17 P owering Up and Setting the Cloc k — Continued ■ Setting A CCUCLOCK to Use a Speci fi c Station If the wrong time is displayed, you can specify which FM station the ACCUCLOCK function should use. This must be an FM station that supports RDS CT (Clock T ime) infor - mation.
18 P owering Up and Setting the Cloc k — Continued For Eur opean models: If you cannot set the clock by using the ACCUCLOCK function, you can set it manually . In this case, the A CCUCLOCK function will not automatically cali- brate the clock each day .
19 Using the CR-505 1 Use the [INPUT] button, or the remote con- troller ’ s INPUT [ ]/[ ] b uttons to select one of the follo wing sound sources: CD, FM or AM, T APE, MD , LINE. The currently selected source is shown on the display . 2 If y ou selected CD, see “ Playing CDs ” on page 20.
20 Pla ying CDs 1 Press the [ ] button to open the disc tray , put the CD on the tray with the label-side facing up, and press the [ ] button a gain to close the tray . Be sure to put 8 cm discs in the center of the tray . 2 Press the Play [ ] b utton to start play- back.
21 Playing CDs — Continued This section explains ho w to display various information, including the remaining track time, remaining disc time, and ID3 tag for MP3 tracks. 1 During playbac k, press the [DISPLA Y] but- ton repeatedly to c ycle thr ough the follo w- ing options.
22 V arious Playbac k W ith the Repeat function you can play a track, a folder or a disc repeatedly . 1 During playbac k, press the remote con- troller ’ s [REPEA T] button repeatedly to select repeat mode. The REPEA T indicator lights up. The TRA CK or FOLDER indicators fl ash for the track repeat or folder repeat mode.
23 V arious Playback — Continued W ith the Memory function you can make a custom program of your fa vorite tracks. 1 While stopped, press the remote control- ler ’ s [MODE] button repeatedly until the MEMOR Y indicator appears on the dis- play .
24 Using the Radio 1 Use the [INPUT] button, or the remote con- troller ’ s INPUT [ ]/[ ] b uttons to select AM or FM. 1 Press and hold the TUNING [ ] or [ ] button on the remote contr oller for more than one second and then release it. The CR-505 searches for the next station.
25 Using the Radio — Continued W ith the Auto Preset function you can automatically preset all the FM stations av ailable in your area. 1 Use the INPUT [ ]/[ ] buttons to select FM. 2 Press the [MODE] button. 3 Use the [ ]/[ ] buttons to displa y “ P- EDIT , ” and then press the [ENTER] button.
26 Using the Radio — Continued Y ou can delete unwanted presets as follows. 1 Select the preset that y ou want to delete . 2 Press the [MODE] button and use the [ ]/ [ ] buttons to display “ P-EDIT . ” 3 Press the [ENTER] button. 4 Use the [ ]/[ ] buttons to displa y “ ERASE.
27 Other Functions W ith this function you can temporarily mute the output of the CR-505. 1 Press the remote controller ’ s [MUTING] button. The output is muted and the MUTING indicator fl ashes on the display , as shown. 2 T o unm ute the CR-505, press the [MUT - ING] button a gain, or adjust the remote controller ’ s v olume [ ]/[ ] buttons.
28 Timers The CR-505 has four timers so that you can turn it on and off automatically at certain times and on certain days of the week, in order to listen to, or record your fa vorite programs.

30 Timers — Contin ued Y ou can turn timers on or off as necessary . This can be use- ful when, for example, you ’ re on holiday and you don ’ t want to be wok en up by the timer that you normally use as an early-morning radio alarm. 1 Press the [TIMER] button repeatedl y to select the timer that y ou want to turn off.
31 Disc Notes Supported Discs The CR-505 supports the following discs. • Some audio CDs use copy protection that doesn ’ t con- form to the of fi cial CD standard. Since these are non- standard discs, they may not play properly in the CR-505. • The CR-505 supports CD-R and CD-R W discs.
32 Disc Notes — Continued Handling Discs • Nev er touch the underside of a disc. Always hold discs by the edge, as shown. • Nev er attach adhesiv e tape or sticky labels to discs. Cleaning Discs • For best results, keep your discs clean. Fingerprints and dust can affect the sound quality and should be remo ved as follows.
33 T r oubleshooting If you hav e any trouble using your CR-505, check the follo wing table for possible causes and remedies. If you still can ’ t resolve the issue yourself, please contact your Onk yo dealer . T rouble P ossible Cause Remedy Can’t turn on the CR-505? The po wer cord is not connected properly .
34 T roub leshooting — Continued T rouble P ossible Cause Remedy Reception is noisy , inter- mittent, and the FM STE- REO indicator flickers? Yo u ’ re too far aw ay from the transmitter . Or , your FM antenna is in the wrong posi- tion or pointing in the wrong direction.
35 T roub leshooting — Continued T rouble P ossible Cause Remedy The timer didn’t work? The CR-505 was already on at the speci fi ed ON time. Set the CR-505 to Standby (page 29). The CR-505 must be in Standby mode, otherwise the timed task will not work.
