3 Operati on Pane l Opera tion Pa nel Explanat ion The display and indi cators show the curren t status of the printe r. All printer setti ngs are made by using the keys and display panel. 5 Menu Over view The menu groups are classif ied into fi ve groups and are selecte d consecutivel y by pressing th e MENU key . If the OK key is pressed when the desired menu scr een is displayed, a me ss age will appear to indicate the next required operation.

The m eani ng of “R” in paper size indications Some paper sizes can be p laced in the printer so that it feeds either long edge firs t or short edge fi rst.

14 Loading Paper: T ray 1 Loading paper i n Tr a y 1 1. Gently pull out T ray 1 until it stops. 2. Load paper int o the tray . Do not load paper abo ve the maximum heig ht line (approximat ely 500 sheets of 20 lb (80 g/m 2 ) paper). 3. Gently push Tra y 1 fi rmly all the way into the machine.
15 Loading Pri nt Media: Multipurp o se Drawer Load ing p aper in t he m ult i- purpose d rawer The met hod of loadin g paper into the multi-purp ose drawer is the sam e as described for T ray 1. When loading en velopes, postcards or transparency film, follow the descriptions belo w .
16 F using Unit Pressu re Adjusment Levers When feeding en vel opes from the multipurpose drawer , damage to the en velopes or smudged printing may occur e ven if en velopes are within speci fication . The pr oblem may be reduced b y shifting the fusing unit pressure adju sting levers from the normal posi tion to the lo wer pressure position.
17 Loading Pri nt Media: T ransparency Fi lm Loading transp arency f ilm Be sure to load the transparen cy film with the wh ite label side up. Make sure n o image will be printed on the labe l. Printing on the labe l may cause smudges on prints. T ransparency f ilm must be placed in sho r t edge f irst orientation.
18 Loading Pri nt Media: In the stan d/3 x 5 00 sheet paper drawer Upper pape r tray The upper tray is the same as the multi-purpose dra wer . Use the upper tray according to the instruc tions for the mult i-purpose d rawer . Middle an d lower pa per tray s Up to 500 sheet s of recommended plain paper c an be loaded into th ese trays.
19 Loadin g Print Media: In the st and/M P D and 2 000 sheet paper draw er Upper pape r tray The uppe r paper tray is equivalent to the multipurpose drawer . The method of loadin g paper and the paper that can be used are the same as for the mu l ti- purpose dr awer .
20 Adding T on er When toner r uns out, the message CHANGE THE TONER CART RI DGE appears on the display in dicating that the print cartridge must be replaced. If you press and hol d down the INFORMA TION key whil e pri nting or in standby , the qua ntity of to ner remaini ng (as a percentag e) displays.
21 Adding T on er (cont.) 3. On the side, ei ther unlatch the duple x module a nd gen tly it pull away or open the side cover . 4. While holdi ng the lock release b utton down, pull out the printer c artridge and remov e it. 5. Remove the new printer ca rtridge from its bag and r emov e the protectiv e material A.
22 Adding T on er (cont.) 8. Gently remo ve the sealin g tape from the cartridge. 9. Remov e the drum protecti ve sheet from the p rinter cartri dge. Do not touch or damage th e surface of the photo drum. 10.Clos e the duple x module. If the machine is not equ ipped with the duplex mo dule, close the side co ver .
23 Develope r Car tridge Replac ement When the cartridg e needs replacing, a message will a ppear in th e display . Follo w the procedure belo w to replace the de veloper cartridge. • Do not shak e the dev eloper cartridge after the sealing tap e has been removed .
24 Developer C ar tridge Replacement (co nt.) 4. Push th e lock button at the re ar and remov e the deve loper cartridge. 5. Remov e the new de veloper ca r tridge from its bag and remove the tape and protecti ve material A and B. 6. Shake the new de veloper cartridge horizontall y fiv e or six times.
25 Cancel a Print Job Cancel a Prin t Job 1. Press BACK/C during prin ting. Printing sto ps and a message asking for confirmati on to delete the job appears.
26 Job Con trol The job hol d function can be used o nly if your print er is equipped with th e hard disk dri ve option. If Pri nt after hold , Print before hold or Pr oof print operation i s performed on the computer , print data will be h el d as a hold jo b.
27 Job Con trol (cont. ) 6. Use the same procedur e as step 5 to enter the password from the second digit to th e fifth digit a nd then pr ess OK . 7. Select execution or cancellation of printing, or data reten tion after printing, a nd then press OK .
28 Condit ion Se ttings There are three opt ions that can be set from the Opera tor Panel for th is setting: • Default settings : Basic settings used in printin g. • PCL Sym bol Set : Estab lishes a PC L symbol set. • Print PS Errors: Defines whether a PostScri pt error page is p rinted or not when a PostScript error has oc curred.
29 Default Settings The default set tings allow detaile d print condition s to be set for prin ting without any p r inter dri ver (for e xample, printing from MS-DOS and printing from a computer without a ny printer d river installed).
30 Default Settings (cont.) How to A ccess Default Settings 1. Press MEN U until SET OPERA TIONS CONDIT IONS appears. Any print jobs held in the printer an d any job current ly transmitte d to the prin ter will be printed with the forme r printer settings.
31 Custom Setti ngs The items that can b e set: T ray settings: The pa per type and paper size for each tray a r e set here. A uto tray switching: Used to automatica lly switch the paper tray to another tray of the same p aper size when paper runs out during continuous printing.
32 Misfeed Remova l General Info rmation All messages ap pear on the display panel of the main unit. Wh en a misfeed has occurred, pr inting will stop and the message sho w n below will appear . Follow the procedure below to rem ove misfed paper . CAUTION • Do not damage or touch the photoconduct ive drum.
33 Misfeed in the Paper Are a Be sur e to follo w the misfeed r emov al sequence. Do not pull the paper tray out f irst as paper may be l ocated between the paper tray and the paper feed section. If the tray is pulled first , the misfed paper may be torn and d ifficult to remove.
34 Misfeed in the Pa per Area (cont.) 3. If misfed paper is not found in step 2, pull out paper tray 1 and remo ve the misfed paper carefully . 4. Gently close the paper tray . Push the paper tray back into the ma chine. 5. Gently close the d uplex module.
35 Misfeed in multi-purpose drawer 1. If a vailable, u nlatch the duple x module, sli de it to the l eft and gent ly move the module away from the machine. If the machine i s not equipped wit h a duplex module, open the side cov er . 2. Open the le ft cover of the stand/pape r drawer .
36 Misfeed in the stand/M PD and 2 000 sheet paper dr awer For misf eed removal in t he upper tray , refer to the procedure Misfeed i n the multi-pu rpose drawer . 37 Misfeed in th e transpor t area, fusing ar ea and exit area CA UTION: The fusing unit i s hot. T ak e care when remo ving paper . Do not touch the me tal parts. 1. Unlatch the duplex module and sl ide it to the left . Gently move the mo dule awa y from the machine.
38 Misfeed in th e transpor t area, fusing area a nd exit area (cont.) 3. If paper i s misfed in the transpor t area, turn kn ob B in the direction of the arro w t o remov e the misfed paper . 4. If the misfed paper is insid e the fusing area, turn do wn the fusing unit open tab to open t he fusing unit and r emove the misfed paper .
39 T roubleshoot ing Whenever the printer stops or operation is not possible, check the opera t ion panel display f o r messages. In most cases these me ssages will g ive sufficient informa tion to return the machine t o an operating c ondit ion. In cases where this information is not enou gh, check th e list below for more information.
