33 Planning This chapter contains information about the follo wing topics: • "Challenges of integrating voice applications" (page 33) • "DHCP ser ver planning" (page 36) • &q.
34 Planning • rate scaling and variable capacity • power adjustments and variable capacity • Quality of Ser vice (QoS) High overhead of 802.11 Unlike many other 802.n standards, 802.11 has a ver y high amount of ov erhead associated with transmitting a pack et.
Challenges of integrating v oice applications 35 P ower adjustments and variab le capacity A WLAN has dynamic mechanisms in place f or adjusting channels, adjusting power , and filling cov erage holes, all in response to changes in the Radio F requency (RF) environment.
36 Planning F or e xample, if a data device does seiz e the medium, it can send a 1500-byte fr ame at the lowest data rate (if it is f ar awa y from the AP), and fur ther delay v oice frames. In addition, sev eral data de vices contending for the medium can each, in tur n, send large frames bef ore the voice de vice gained access to the medium.
DHCP server planning 37 handset perf or ms a DNS lookup of the name SLNKSVP2, if Options 6 (DNS Ser ver) and 15 (Domain Name) are configured. • DHCP Option 152. If an optional WLAN Application Gatewa y 2246 is used in the system, its IP address can be specified with this option.
38 Planning Figure 2 Sample DHCP reser v ation showing assigned parameters Another use f or the DHCP ser ver is to mak e code upgrades to the handset easier . T o pre vent handsets from checking f or code upgr ades, assign the value of 255.255.255.255 f or the TFTP ser ver address .
TFTP Server planning 39 Only one TFTP ser ver is needed in the network, and it need not be colocated with the handsets or the WLAN IP T elephony Manager 2245. There is a client-dependent aspect to how the handsets function with the TFTP ser ver . Ho w well a ser ver works with the handsets can var y between code versions on the handset.
40 Planning Nor tel has tested the f ollowing TFTP ser v ers. The y are listed in order of pref erence. • Nor tel TFTP ser ver (ONMS application) • 3COM TFTP • PumpkinTFTP Syslog Server planning.
Access point planning 41 A site sur v ey is critical to designing and implementing a wireless LAN. The site sur ve y is used to deter mine the number of APs needed to suppor t the wireless handset users and to determine the best placement of the APs. Diff erent AP vendors pro vide diff erent tools to do this.
42 Planning the Site Sur ve y mode displa ys signals only from APs on the same Extended Ser vice Set ID (ESSID), check f or signals from APs using all ESSIDs to av oid channel overlap . Figure 3 Frequencies used by b radio • Wireless handset range—Wireless LAN coverage m ust be av ailable where ver wireless handsets are used.
Access point planning 43 — 15% of the av ailable bandwidth per call for 1 Mbs operation. Note: These requirements mean that areas with a high-use density must receiv e RF cov erage at the highest data rate of operation.
44 Planning cases, a room originally built f or a specific pur pose, such as a r adiology lab , can be conv er ted into something completely diff erent, such as a conf erence room. The blueprint can also show areas proposed for future building e xpansion.
Access point planning 45 Figure 4 Sample AP placement diagram for b radio Solving covera g e issues T o resolv e cover age issues, add and relocate APs. Solving overlap issues T o resolv e overlap issues, reassign channels to the APs or relocate the APs.
46 Planning Figure 5 b radio assignment F or more information about overlap , see the AP vendor documentation. Network planning Y ou must ensure that all connections and interfaces f or the IP T elephony network are configured as full-duplex.
Network management 47 — Necessar y traffic f or instance DHCP must be allo wed, while all other traffic is denied. Sample Access Control List The f ollowing is a sample A CL f or a voice VLAN named VLAN120. set security acl ip SpectraLink permit udp 0.
48 Planning Assessment through a WLAN site sur vey T echnical suppor t f or V oWLAN is contingent on customers perf or ming a site sur ve y of the WLAN. Currently , Nor tel recommends the use of the Ekahau Site Sur vey tool to verify the network deplo yment, although other site sur ve y tools are acceptable .
Network management 49 Both location-solution types use a f or m of triangulation to compute the location of the device . Depending on the pow er le vel of the AP , it can sometimes hear devices that it cannot transmit to .
50 Planning noticeable when a v oice call trav erses such a link. Vivinet Assessor is e xtremely useful for identifying the symptoms of issues and fixing such problem areas in the network long before the customer places the first call.
Network management 51 Figure 6 ENMS 10.5 IPSM overview After you clic k on a specific IP Phone, the panel in the low er r ight por tion of the screen displays details automatically , such as the CS 1000 system, with which the IP Phone is registered.
52 Planning Figure 7 ENMS 10.5 IPSM conver g ence view ENMS can provide down to physical slot por t connectivity for the wired network. This topology data is e xtremely useful when shown in the Conv erged View of a P ath T race . Y ou can set the displa y to refresh periodically to display the latest inf or mation about IP address changes.
Network management 53 Call trac king is another feature that is not specifically related to QoS monitoring or f ault monitoring, but that is impor tant to solution manageability .
54 Planning The aler t from Vivinet AppManager activates Vivinet Diagnostics , which traces the path of the call, collects diagnostic inf or mation, and can perform root cause analysis. Y ou can sav e the results for fur ther analysis and action. F or an e xample, see Figure 8 "NetiQ Vivinet Diagnostics example" (page 54) .
Other network design considerations 55 Other network design considerations WLAN Handsets 2210/2211/2212 are 802.11b-only de vices and the WLAN Handsets 6120/6140 are 802.11b, 802.11g and 802.11a devices , which creates challenging choices for network deplo yments.
56 Planning channels, which is detr imental to voice de vices. As a general policy , f or large amounts of data, use 802.11a f or data and 802.11b for v oice, b ut leav e 802.11g disabled. Alternately , if there are fe w 802.11b/g data de vices and the WLAN is to be used primar ily for v oice, consider enabling 802.
Other network design considerations 57 Example The channel reuse factor f or 802.11b networks is fix ed at three (three nonov er lapping channels in the 2.4 GHz range), corresponding to channels 1, 6, and 11. The transmit po wer is fix ed at 50 mW , which estab lishes the radius of the cell.
58 Planning Lay er 3 implementation Where possible, simplify the number of subnets that are used f or client de vices. Even in a Distributed Campus architecture , you can ha ve a f e w central subnets f or clients. As a general rule, Nor tel recommends that wired or wireless IP phones be placed in a separate VLAN (subnet) from data de vices.
WLAN IP T elephony Manager 2245 planning 59 industr y . So to mitigate risks, you can use a firewall to bloc k all but the por ts needed for IP T elephon y .
60 Planning In any subnet where wireless handsets are used, each subnet must ha ve one or more WLAN IP T elephony Managers 2245. A WLAN IP T elephony Manager 2245 group on a subnet consists of one or more WLAN IP T elephon y Managers 2245 and their associated wireless handsets.
WLAN IP T elephony Manager 2245 planning 61 T ab le 4 "Multiple WLAN IP T elephony Manager 2245-80 capacities" (page 61) lists the call capacities f or WLAN IP T elephon y Manager 2245-80 groups.
62 Planning Ta b l e 5 Multiple WLAN IP T elephony Manager 2245-10 and 2245-20 capacities Number of WLAN IP Telephony Managers 2245 Number of handsets WLAN IP Telephony Manager 2245-10 Number of hands.
WLAN IP T elephony Manager 2245 planning 63 The handsets encapsulate their voice pa yloads in SVP f or QoS . The handsets fur ther synchronize comm unications, so that the handsets are able to a void collisions with each other more effectiv ely than the usual 802.
64 Planning T o gain this type of predictability , engineer the maximum calls per AP based on 1 Mb/2 Mb rate selections in the handsets, configure that number as the call limit on the WLAN IP T elephon y Manager 2245, and then configure the actual rate of the handsets (on the WLAN IP T elephony Manager 2245) to A utomatic.
Placement guidelines for the WLAN IP T elephony Manager 2245 65 returns. If the wireless handset is configured to use ESSID of the ne w WLAN, it automatically discov ers the ESSID of the APs operating in broadcast mode. T ab le 6 "Roaming and handover capabilities summar y" (page 65) summarizes the capabilities.
66 Planning Bef ore adding the WLAN IP T elephony Manager 2245 to the netw or k: • Ensure that the APs used in the network are V oice Interoperability f or Enter pr ise Wireless (VIEW) cer tified. F or more information, go to w ww .spectralink.com/consumer/par tners/view_cer tification.
Placement guidelines for the WLAN IP T elephony Manager 2245 67 T o achie ve e xcellent voice quality , Nor tel recommends using G711 CODEC with the f ollowing configuration: • End-to-end dela y < = 150 ms (one wa y) • P ack et loss < = 0.5% • The maximum jitter buff er f or the handsets set as low as possible.
68 Planning • F or an e xample of an end-to-end delay f or a W AN, see Figure 13 "Example 2: End-to-end delay and pac ket loss f or a W AN" (page 69) .
