1 G G G G etting star ted Before you use your portable for the first time, see “Safety information” on page 32. Y ou should also charge its battery pack ov ernight in the rear charger slot (see “ All about batteries and recharging” on page 28).
2 Note: The three buttons directly below your portable’ s display are called softkeys. Their labels appear on the display with an underline above the button to which they are assigned.
3 Answering a call If the flap is already open, press or . If the flap is closed, open it. If the flap is closed and the headset is connected, press . If Flap Closed operation is turned on, press or open the flap. Accessing features during a call T o access the menu while on a call, press , then select the appropriate softke y .
4 M aking two calls in a row Leav e the flap open, press after your first call. The portable maintains its radio connection for another call. Keeping your connection T o maintain your call, stay in the radio coverage area. If you hav e problems with your connection, r etr ace your steps.
5 Redialing last number Y our portable is set up so that you can redial the last number you dialed by pressing when it appears. Dialing the last caller Y ou can vie w the names of the last two callers when appear s on the display . Press and or to vie w the names.
6 Adjusting the ringing volume When the phone is ringing you can adjust the ringing volume with the v olume switch. The ringing volume can only be adjusted when the control switch is in the top ( ) position. When the phone is not ringing, use the Menu to access the volume adjustment le vels.
7 Note: If your portable has not been registered, the display shows when you open the flap. If you wish to register to more systems or are having trouble with your registration, call the contact for your system. Flap closed operation Y ou can make and recei ve calls with the portable’ s flap closed.
8 U U U U sing your personal director y Y our portable has an alphabetical directory that allo ws you to store up to 50 entries for telephone numbers, feature codes, or both. Moving through the director y Once you hav e stored directory entries, you can mov e through them quickly by pressing the first letter of the entry you want.
9 3. Enter the first letter of the name by pressing the button that has the letter you want. F or example to enter , press ; to enter , press . 4. Enter the rest of the letters as sho wn in step 3. 13 Using your por table with the headset T o answer a call, press . T o end a call, press . Note: If you wear a hearing aid, you should use the C3002 headset.
14 C C C C ustomizing your por table Hint: Whenever you are searching through a list, you can press the fi rst letter of the feature, director y , or system entry you want. If there is more than one entr y under a letter , press to keep looking. T o customize your portable, use the , w hic h contains a number of features in alphabetical order .
15 Discrete Ring If you want your portable to ring once, press , or , , . Set the ringer control switch to the middle ( ) position. T o prevent your portable from ringing, set the ringer control switch to the middle ( ) position and press , or , , . Hint: T o stop the ringing or vibrating during an incoming call press .
16 Key protect Press , or , select , and select or . When is turned on, press to acti vate softk eys or b uttons on the portable. Hint: If you are using a headset or flap closed operation is turned on, you may want to turn Key-protect on. Language Press , select , press , then or to mov e between the and selections.

20 Message waiting Some systems allo w your portable to display if you hav e a voice mail message. E v en if your system does not support Message W aiting indication, y ou can set up your portable to dial directly into your voice mailbox. See “Message Service”.
21 D e pending on your v oice mail system, y ou may be required to chang e the dial codes. Dial codes are the numbers used to access v oice mail system features. F or example, the default dial code 76 deletes a message. If your voice mail system is Meridian Mail, y ou do not hav e to change the dial codes.

23 C ustomizing softkeys F or direct, one-touch a ccess to frequently used features or frequently called numbers, use your softke ys. Y our customized idle softke ys are a vailable when the portable is not in use. Y ou can also customize an acti ve softke y that is av ailable while you are on a call.

28 A A A A ll about batteries and recharging Impor tant batter y information Before using your rechargeable battery pack for the first time, it must be charged in the rear char ger slot for at least 8 hours. This is necessary to ensure full battery life.
29 Installing batter y packs Hook the hinges of the battery pack into the slots at the bottom of your portable, and push the pack and the portable together until the pack clicks shut. Preparing the charger Connect the ac adaptor plug of the power cable to the rear of the charger , then attach the ac adaptor to a po wer source.
30 Hint: In high usage environments it is a good idea to have a spare batter y pack. Alternating the spare batter y pack between charges will prolong batter y life. AAA batteries Y ou can also use an optional AAA battery holder with your portable . Insert the batteries into the battery holder .
31 A A A A ccessories for your por table There are a number of C3050 accessories av ailable from your Nortel distributor . • C3001 Ear Bud Headset a small and lightweight ear-bud type headset • C3002 Over -the-head Headset a full over-the-head band for extra stability and hold with a single earpiece.
32 S S S S afety information Electromagnetic energy safety Hazar dous conditions may arise if the portable telephone is operated near construction blasting caps or near emergenc y service radio recei vers. Do not use this portable telephone in locations bearing warning signs that caution against radio transmission.
33 Charg e the battery pack pro vided with the portable only in accordance with the instructions specified in this manual. Do not short circuit batteries. Batteries may explode when short circuited. Antenna safety The C3050 portable telephone emits lo w lev els of radio energy .
