However , the operating distance or range of your wireless connection can vary significantly depending on the physical placement of your router.

If you set up your computer to use a static IP address, change the settings so that it uses Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP).

16 3 3. Specif y Y our Int ernet Settings Usually , the quickest way to set up the router to use your Internet connection is to allow the genie to detect the Internet connection when you first access the router with a web browser . Y ou can also customize or specify your Internet settings.

The Setup Wizard is not the same as the genie screens that display the first time you connect to your router to set it up.

Y ou can set up a DMZ (demilitarized zone) server , change the maximum transmit unit (MTU) size, and enable the router to respond to a ping to its W AN (Internet) port.

A computer designated as the default DMZ server loses much of the protection of the firewall and is exposed to exploits from the Internet. If compromised, the DMZ server computer can be used to attack other computers on your network.

Set Up a Guest Network A guest network allows visitors at your home to use the Internet without using your wireless security key .

T r oubleshooting 68 N150 and N300 Wireles s Router s All LEDs R emain Lit When the router is turned on, the LEDs light for about 10 seconds and then turn off. If all the LEDs stay lit, a fault exists within the router. If all LEDs are still lit one minute after power-up, try the following: • Unplug the router’s power adapter cord.

T r oubleshooting 71 N150 and N300 Wireles s Router s If your router is still unable to obtain an IP address from the ISP , the problem might be one of the following: • Y our Internet service provider (ISP) might require a login program. Ask your ISP if it requires PPP over Ethernet (PPPoE) or some other type of login.
