1 Getting to Know Y our Wireless Router Congratulations on your purchase of a NETGEA R® high-speed wireless router , the 54 Mbps W irele ss ADSL2+ Modem Route r Model DG834G . Before you begin installing your rout er , check the package contents (see “Unpacking Y our New Router” on page 1 ).
2 Getting to Know Your Wireless Router Hardware Features Before you install and connect yo ur router , take a moment to become familiar with the front and back panels of the router—espec ially the LEDs on the front panel. Front Panel The wireless modem router front panel shown below contains status LEDs.

9 Inst alling Y our Router Using the Smart Wizard T o use the Smart W izard, you must be usin g a PC with W indows V ista, or W indows 2000 or W indows XP with Service Pack 2. The Smart W izard setup procedu re should take abou t 15 minutes to complete.

19 Configuring Y our Wireless Network After the router is installed and the Internet co nnection is working, configure its wireless network settings. The wireless network settings of the ro uter must .
20 Configuring Your Wireless Network Setting Y our SSID and Wireless Security Manually T o specify the wireless settings, you must know the following: • SSID. The default SSID for the router is NETGE AR. • The wireless mode (802.1 1g/b, or 802.1 1n ) that each wireless adapter supports.
Configuring Your Wireless Network 21 3. Check that the security settings on each wi reless device match the security settings of the router . For example, if you selected a security option requiring a passphrase, then the same passphrase must be used fo r each wireless computer .
22 Configuring Your Wireless Network These instructions assume that you are config uring WPS on the router for the first time and connecting a WPS-capable device. T o set up bas ic wireless connectivity: 1. Log in to the wireless modem router at its default LAN address of http://192.

24 Configuring Your Wireless Network T o access the Internet from any computer connect ed to yo ur wireless modem router, launch a browser such as Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator . Y ou should see the wireless modem router’ s Internet LED blink, indicating communication to the ISP .
25 T roubleshooting This chapter gives information about troubleshooting your wireless modem router. After each problem description, instructions ar e provided to help you dia gnose and solve the problem. For the common problems listed, go to the section indicated.
26 Troubleshooti ng If a port’ s LED is lit, a link has been establis hed to the connected device. If a LAN port is connected to a 100 Mbps device, verify that the port’ s LED is green. If the port is 10 Mbps, the LED will be amber . If any of these conditions does not occur , refer to the appropriate following section.
Troubleshooting 27 • Make sure that the Ethernet cable connections are secure at the router and at the hub or workstation. • Make sure that power is turned on to the conn ected hu b or workstation. • Be sure you are using the corr ect cable: when connecting the ADSL port, use the cable that was supplied with the wire less modem router.
28 Troubleshooti ng • Click the Refresh or Reload button in the W e b browser . The changes may hav e occurred, but the W eb browser ma y be caching the old configuration. T roubleshooting the ISP Connection If your router is unable to access the Internet , you should check the ADSL connection, then the Internet TCP/IP connection.
Troubleshooting 29 • V e rify that you are connected to th e correct te lephon e line. If you have more than one phone line, be sure that you are connected to the line with the ADSL service. It may be necessary to use a swapper if you ADSL signal is on pins 1 and 4 of the RJ-1 1 jack.
30 Troubleshooti ng T roubleshooting PPPoE or PPPoA The PPPoE or PPPoA co nnection can be debugged as follows: 1. Access the main menu of the router at http://192.168.0.1. 2. Under the Maintenance heading, select Router Status. 3. Click the Connection S tatus button.
Troubleshooting 31 T roubleshooting a TCP/IP Network Using the Ping Utility Most TCP/IP terminal devices and routers contain a ping utility that sends an echo request packet to the designated device. The device then respond s with an echo reply . T roubleshooting a TCP/IP network is made easy by using th e ping utility in your computer .
32 Troubleshooti ng T esting the Path from Y ou r Computer to a Remote Device After verifying that the LAN path works correctly , test the path from your PC to a remote device. From the W indows run menu, type: PING -n 10 < IP address > where < IP address > is the IP address of a remote device such as your ISP’ s DNS server .
