1-6 Overv ie w IBM -E IA-485 The 5992 s u pports the f uture release of the IBM EIA-485 p rotocol for direct c onnection to an IBM 468x terminal. T h e EIA-485 interface supports a 187,5 00 bps da ta rate using hal f-duplex, a synchronous mode. The d ata format i s eight data bits, one start bi t, one poll/select bit and tw o stop b its.

4-1 Chapte r 4 Operational Modes Introductio n The NCR 599 2 has tw o primary operational modes: Norm al and Supervisor/Diagnostic . The 5992 also ha s a Maintenance mode that pe rm it s y ou t o mo dify it ’ s operations. I n Normal mode, the 5992 perform s signature capture and other fu n ctions for which it is designed.

4-18 Operati onal M odes Maintenance Mode When pow er is ap plied to t he 5992, it begin s Power- up diagno stics. If the st at us o f a ll test s i s “ Pas s ed, ” a tone sounds . To enter Maintenance Mode, immediatel y touch th e stylus to the NCR logo at the upper ri g h t corner of the screen .
