Upgrading from an Original iPhone Contact your cellular service provider for inf ormation about upgrading an original iPhone to iPhone 3G. Additional f ees may apply . Installing the SIM Card If your SIM card was not preinstalled , you must install the SIM card bef ore you can use iPhone.

Chapter 2 Basics 17 Status Icons The icons in the status bar at the top of the scr een give information about iPhone: Status icon What it means Cell signal Shows whether you ’ re in range of the cellular network and can make and receive calls. The more bars , the str onger the signal.
Status icon What it means Bluetooth Blue or white icon: Bluetooth is on and a device, such as a headset or car kit, is connected. Gr ay icon: Bluetooth is on, but no device is connected. Chapter 2 Basics 21 Create additional Home screens: While arranging icons , drag an icon to the right edge of the screen until a new screen appears. Y ou can flick to return to the original screen and drag more icons to the new scr een. Y ou can create up to nine screens.

Scrolling Drag up or down to scroll. On some screens such as webpages, you can also scroll side to side. Dragging your finger to scroll w on’ t choose or activate anything on the screen. Flick to scr oll quick ly . Y ou can wait for the scrolling to come to a stop , or tap or touch an ywhere on the screen to stop it immediately .
Chapter 2 Basics 25 Lists Some lists have an index along the right side. Find it ems in an indexed list: T ap a lett er to jump to items starting with that letter . Drag your finger along the index to scroll quickly through the list. Index Choose an item: T ap an item in the list.
T yping Depending on the application you ’ re using, the intelligent keyboard may automatically suggest corrections as you type to help prevent mistyped words. Enter te xt: 1 T ap a tex t field , such as in a note or new contact, to bring up the keyboard .

When Simplified or T raditional Chine se handwriting formats are turned on, you can enter Chinese characters with your finger , as shown: Dictionar y F or many languages, iPhone has dic tionaries to help you type. Stereo Headset with mic The headset included with iPhone feature s a microphone and an integrated butt on that allows you to answ er and end calls easily , and con trol audio and video playback.
Decline an incoming call P ress and hold for about two seconds , then let go. When you let go , two low beeps confirm you declined the call. Switch to an incoming or on-hold call and put the current call on hold Press onc e. Press again t o switch back to the first call.
Chapter 2 Basics 31 Join a Wi-Fi netw ork: Choose S ettings > Wi-F i, wait a moment as iPhone detects networks in range, then selec t a network (fees ma y apply to join some Wi-Fi netw orks). If necessary , enter a passwor d and tap Join (networks that require a password appear with a lock icon).

Restar ting and Resetting iPhone If something is not working right, r estar ting or resetting iPhone will likely solve the problem. Restart iPhone: P ress and hold the Sleep/W ake button until the red slider appears. Slide your finger across the slider to turn o ff iPhone.
35 Making a call on i Phone is as simple as tapping a name and number in your c ontacts, tapping one of your fav orites, or tapping a recen t call to return it. Visual voicemail displays a list of y our messages you can listen to in an y order you want.
Call someone in your con tacts list T ap C ontacts, choose a contact, then tap a phone number . Call a fav orite T ap F avorite s, then choose a contact. Return a recent call T ap Recents, then tap a name or number in the list. Dial a number T ap Keypad , enter the number , then tap Call.
Chapter 3 Phone 37 While On a Call When you ’ re on a call, the screen shows call options. Mute your call: T ap Mute. Y ou can still hear the caller , but the caller can’ t hear you. Use the keypad to ent er information: T ap Keypad. Use the speakerphone or a Bluetooth device: T ap Speaker .
Create a conf erence call: 1 Make a call. 2 T ap Add Call and make another call. The first call is put on hold. 3 T ap M erge C alls. The calls are mer ged onto one line and everyone can hear each other . 4 Repeat steps two and three to add up to fiv e calls.
Chapter 3 Phone 39 Visual V oicemail On iPhone, visual v oicemail lets you see a list of your messages and choose which one s to listen to or delete , without having to list en to instructions or prior messages. Note: Visual voicemail may not be available in all r egions, or may be an optional ser vice .

Chapter 3 Phone 41 F avorites F av orites gives you quick acce ss to your most-used phone numbers. Add a con tact ’ s number to your fa vorites list: T ap Contacts and choose a contact. Then tap “ Add to F avorites ” and choose the number you want to add.
Set the default ringtone: In Settings, choose Sounds > Ringtone, then choose a ringtone. Assign a ringtone to a con tact: F rom Phone, tap Contacts and choose a contact. End a call Press the headset butt on. Adjust the volume Use the iPhone volume buttons. Decline an incoming call P ress button for about one sec ond, until you hear a beep. Switch to an incoming or on-hold call and put the current call on hold Press butt on.
Chapter 3 Phone 45 Bluetooth Status The Bluetooth icon appears in the iPhone status bar at the top of the scr een: (blue) or (white): Bluetooth is on and a device is connected to iPhone. ( The color depends on the current color of the status bar .

48 Mail works with MobileMe, Microsoft Exchange, and many of the most popular email systems—including Y ahoo! Mail, Google email, and AOL—as well as other industry- standard POP3 and IMAP email systems. Y ou can send and receive embedded photos and graphics, and view PDFs and other attachmen ts.
Chapter 4 Mail 49 4 Enter a subject, then your message . Y ou can tap Return to move from one field to another . 5 T ap S end . Send a photo in a message In Photos, choose a photo , tap , then tap Email Photo . The photo is sent using your defa ult email account (see “Mail” on page 111 ).

I f the format of an attached file isn ’t supported by iPhone, you can see the name of the file but y ou can ’t open it.
Check for new messages Choose a mailbox or tap at an y time. See all the recipients of a message T ap Details. T ap a name or email address t o see the recipient’ s contact information. Then tap a phone number , email address, or text message to con tact the person.

Return to a recently view ed page T ap and tap Histor y . T o clear the histor y list, tap Clear . Send a webpage address via email T ap and tap “Mail Link to this P age.” Save an image or photo t o your Camera Roll album Press and hold the image , then tap Save Image.
Chapter 5 Safari 57 Entering T ex t and F illing Out F orms Some webpages hav e text fields and forms to fill out. Bring up the keyboard T ap inside a text field. Move to another te xt field T ap another text field , or tap the Next or Previous button.
Open a bookmarked webpage: T ap , then choose a book mark or tap a folder t o see the bookmarks inside. Edit a bookmark or bookmark folder: T ap , choose the folder tha t has the bookmark or folder you want to edit, then tap E dit. Then do one of the following: T o make a new folder , tap New Folder .
59 iPhone syncs with iT unes on your comput er to get songs, videos , and other content you ’ve collected in your iT unes libr ar y . For information about adding music and other media to your iT unes libr ar y , open iT unes and choose Help > iTune s Help.
If there are more songs in your iT unes librar y than can fit on your iPhone, iTune s o ff ers to create a s pecial playlist to sync with iPhone. iT unes fills the playlist with selections from your library . Y ou can add or delete songs from the playlist and sync again.
Chapter 6 iP od 61 T ransferring Purchased C onten t to Another Computer Y ou can transfer content on iPhone that w as purchased using iT unes on one computer to an iT une s librar y on another authorized comput er . The computer must be authorized to pla y content from y our iT unes account.

Delete a saved Genius pla ylist: In a playlist that you saved directly on iPhone, tap Edit, then tap Delete Playlist. Once a Genius playlist is synced back to iT unes , you won ’ t be able to delete it directly from iPhone. Y ou can use iT unes to edit the playlist name, stop syncing , or delete the playlist.

Responding to Meeting In vitations If you have a Microsoft Exchange accoun t set up on iPhone with Calendars enabled, you can receiv e and respond to meeting in vitations from people in your organization. When you receiv e an invitation, the meeting appears in your calendar with a dott ed line around it.
