16-bit plus A uto Dust Brush 11 CPU , RAM, and hard-disc space requirements with 16-bit color depth, A uto Dust Br ush (dust- remov al function), and Pix el P olish (automatic image-correction function) are as f ollows: P entium 166MHz (Pentium II) or later processor .
G ETTING ST AR TED 12 RAM-stationed programs such as anti-virus or installation-monitoring software ma y cause the installer to f ail. Remov e or disable these prog rams bef ore installing the scanner software. Reinstall or enable the softw are when the installation is complete.
The scanner software can be launched directly from man y image-processing applications such as Photoshop Elements (p . 16). When the scanner utility software is installed in a computer with a Windows oper ating system, a TW AIN driver is installed with it.
G ETTING ST AR TED 14 Installing the utility software – Macintosh At the bottom left of the installer screen, specify the location in which the software will be installed. T o change the designated location, use the install-location menu; this menu can be used to select an e xisting loca- tion or create a new f older .
15 After the computer restar ts, confirm the DS Dual3 (DiMAGE Scan Dual III) f older is installed in the designated location. If the easy-install option was chosen, the f older will contain the f ollowing items: DS Dual3 Utility , DS Dual3 Easy , DS Dual3 Plug-in, and Read Me.

G ETTING ST AR TED 18 Securely plug the B connector of the USB cable into the scanner’ s USB por t and the A connector into the com- puter’ s USB por t. The scanner should be connected directly to the com- puter . Attaching the scanner to a USB hub ma y pre v ent proper operation.
19 Check the scanner is securely connected to the computer . With the front door closed, turn on the scanner with the pow er s witch. Star t up the computer . When launching the utility software , the front door must be closed during initialization; the indicator lamp will blink when the scanner is initializing.
L O ADING THE FILM HOLDERS 20 Handling film Where is the emulsion? T o achie v e the best possible reproduction from the scanner , the film and film holder should be free from dust and dir t. Alwa ys work with processed film in a clean, dust-free environment.
21 Replace the cov er . Slide the two pro- trusions on the left side of the cov er into the two slots in the base (2). Carefully low er the cov er taking care not to mov e the film. Snap the cov er closed by pressing the tw o push marks on each side of the tab (3).
L O ADING THE FILM HOLDERS 22 Loading a film holder into the scanner Inser t the film holder into the scanner in the direction indicated by the arro w . Hold the hold- er straight and le v el when inser ting it into the scanner . Bef ore using the scanner , install the scanner utility software (p .
23 Inser t the cassette into the film chamber as shown (3). Close the chamber door (4); the film-chamber release will retur n to its original position (5). When the indicator lamp glows steadily , open the front door until the top of the door is aligned with the APS adapter mark.
E ASY SCAN UTILITY 24 Open the DS Dual3 (DiMA GE Scan Dual III) f older , and double click the DS Dual3 Easy icon. Select DS Dual 3 (DiMA GE Scan Dual III) Easy Utility from the Minolta DiMA GE Scan Dual3 f older in the progr ams option or all programs option (Windows XP) of the star t menu.
25 Using the Easy Scan Utility When the Easy Scan Utility is launched, the easy scan wizard appears. Simply f ollow the instruc- tions on the scan wizard to scan images. A screen requesting to inser t the film holder appears. Load the holder follo wing the instructions from page 20 to 23.
E ASY SCAN UTILITY 26 When scanning with 35mm film strips or mounted slides, the film type must be specified on this screen. Color negative , B&W negativ e, color positiv e , B&W positiv e film can be scanned. Film for slides is a positiv e film.
Pix el P olish button Index thumbnails: used to select the image to be scanned. When using the optional APS cassette, the thumbnail fr ame numbers correspond to the film frame numbers . Pixel P olish button: Click this b utton to correct images automatically .
If the adjust-image option was selected b y chec king the bo x in the pre vious screen, the adjust- image screen will be displa yed. After making adjustments to the image, clic k the next b utton. E ASY SCAN UTILITY 28 Pixel P olish button: Click this b utton to correct images automatically .
On the sav e-as screen, specify the file name, file fo r mat, and destination of the image data. Click Sav e to star t scanning. Images can be sav ed in BMP , JPEG, TIFF , or PICT file f ormats. See the below f or more about these f ormats. When saving JPEG files , the compression ratio can be specified.

This section cov ers basic scanning, adv anced scanning, and image processing. Read the basic scanning section entirely bef ore moving on to the other sections .
T o load a film holder , see pages 20 to 23. Bef ore scanning, the film f ormat and type must be specified in the main window of the utility softw are. Film f ormat and type are selected from the drop-down men us in the top left cor ner of the main window .

The thumbnail displa y allows the selection of sin- gle or multiple images f or prescanning or scan- ning. Selected images can also be affected b y the scanner software functions such as the rotate buttons . Simply click on a thumbnail to select it; the bor- der will darken to indicate selection.

Rotate – the rotate-right button rotates the thumbnail 90° clockwise and the rotate-left button rotates the image 90° countercloc k- wise each time the buttons are clic k ed.
35 Fit-to-window b utton Nor mally , index thumbnails and prescan images are displa yed based on their siz e and resolution. When the number of thumbnails or the siz e of the prescan is too large or small f or the displa y area, clicking the fit-to-windo w b utton will auto- matically resize the images to fit the displa y area.

A uto cropping eliminates the bl ank space around the image area. Pressing the auto-cropping but- ton cycles through its three positions: crop to outside edge, crop to inside edge , and entire win- dow . The cropping frame is indicated by a marquee (dotted line).
Clicking the auto-cropping b utton to displa y the cropping frame marquee. T o enlarge or reduce the cropping frame , place the mouse pointer ov er the corners or sides of the cropping frame; the pointer will change to a double arro w . Simply click and drag the edge of the frame to adjust the cropping area.
Click the A uto Dust Br ush button bef ore making the final scan; the dust remov al processing will be done at that time. The effect of A uto Dust Br ush cannot be e v aluated in the prescan image. T o cancel the A uto Dust Brush, click the A uto Dust Brush button again.
Scan button (p . 43) Image-correction tab (p . 64) The RGB displa y will show the color v alues for any point on the image . Simply place the mouse pointer on the image area to see the RGB v al- ues of that point. Pressing the shift ke y (Windows) or command k e y (Macintosh) will displa y the CMY v alues.
Clicking the Pix el P olish b utton on the main window auto- matically corrects all the images in the film holder replac- ing any pre vious corrections.
D IMA GE SCAN DU AL III UTILITY – B ASIC SCANNING 42 Making the final scan using Jobs Click the load Job b utton. The Job-selection dialog box will open. Select a Job categor y from the drop-down list. F or details, see the Job file list on page 82.
Click a Job file name to select it. The Job names can be sor ted chronologically or alphabetically by clic king the name or date radio b uttons at the bottom of the dialog bo x. The scan settings of the selected Job file are displa yed on the right side of the window .
A uto-expose-f or -slides chec k bo x: this option acti- v ates the auto-e xposure function when scanning slides. Since the density range of slides is relativ ely unif orm, adjusting the expose f or each slide is usual- ly unnecessar y .
45 Multi-sample list bo x: a multi-sample scans reduces random noise in the image b y analyzing the data of each sample scan; 2, 4, and 8 samples can be made. The more samples taken, the less random noise in the image and the longer the scanning time .

Click on the file name to highlight it. Clic k the OK but- ton to select the settings to apply to the image displa yed in the e xposure-control tab . Confir m the autoe xposure settings in the pref erence window (p . 44). Click the apply b utton to view the results .

The inde x thumbnails can be sav ed as an index file . The inde x file can be loaded into the scanner so that the inde x scan does not need to be made again.

Click the AE-area-selection b utton after prescanning the image. Pressing the shift ke y changes the dot- ted cropping frame to the solid AE area frame .
D IMA GE SCAN DU AL III UTILITY – AD V ANCED SCANNING 52 P oint AF (A utof ocus) Use the f ocusing functions if the film is warped or cur led. Three options are av ailable: autofocus, P oint AF , and manual focus .
53 Manual f ocus The scanner can be f ocused manually using the f ocus meter . For best results , select an area with- in the image with contrast or detail. The manual focus functions cannot f ocus on a low-contrast image area such as a cloudless or ov ercast sky .
D IMA GE SCAN DU AL III UTILITY – AD V ANCED SCANNING 54 Inputting scan settings manuall y Settings f or the final scan such as input or output resolution and size can be man ually made f or individual images in the inde x scan or prescan windows . Once made, the y will remain in eff ect until changed.
55 Resolution can be e xpressed in dpi (dots per inch). This ref ers to how man y pix els are placed along one linear inch. A resolution of 350 dpi, which is commonly used in commercial pr inting, means that an area of one square inch would use 122,500 pix els .
Example 2: setting output by print size and output resolution. This example creates a 148mm X 100mm image to be printed on a 300 dpi pr inter . Select millimeters from the unit list bo x. Enter the output resolution of the printer in the output-resolu- tion list bo x: 300.
F requently used scan settings can be sav ed. A Job file can be deleted. Once deleted, it can not be recov ered. Saving scan settings as a Job Deleting a Job With the settings to be sav ed in the scan setting window , click the sav e Job button. The Job-registr y dialog bo x will open.

59 Click the sa v e b utton to sa v e the Custom Wizard settings . Enter the file name in the sav e window and click OK. The next time the Custom Wizard is used, those settings can be select- ed in the Custom Wizard setting dialog bo x. Click the start button to begin automatic scan- ning.

Guide to image processing tool There are multiple tools that will result in the same eff ect. One ma y be easier or more fle xib le than another . The most suitable tool f or a specific job will depend not only on the required results b ut also the e xperience of the operator ; all changes made with any of the palettes can be reset or undone (p .
66 Image corrections can be stored temporarily as a thumbnail ne xt to the displa yed image . Simply click the snapshot b utton on the tool bar to create a thumbnail with the current image corrections . T o retur n to a pre vious image correction, click on the corre- sponding snapshot thumbnail.
67 Comparing pre and post correction images Clicking the comparison displa y b utton divides the image displa y area in two . The or iginal image is on the left and the corrected image is on the right. T o display the corrected image only , click the comparison display b utton again.
68 Loading image-correction Jobs Click on an image-correction Job thumbnail to select it. Click OK to apply the Job to the displa yed image. Jobs are loaded into the snapshot displa y area. Multiple Jobs can be loaded. Displa y the image to be corrected in the image-correc- tion window .
69 V ar iation palette The v ariation palette allows an image to be corrected by comparing it to other slightly corrected images surrounding it. This is an easy method to correct images f or individuals who are ine xperi- enced in image processing or photofinishing.
70 Drag the brightness, contrast, or color sliders , or enter specific v alues in the corresponding te xt bo x to mak e corrections. Dragging each slider to the right or inputting a positive n umber in the te xt bo x increases the brightness, contrast, and color .
The tone cur v e is a graphic representation of the brightness and color lev els of the image. The bottom axis is the 256 lev els of the original image (input data) from blac k to white. The ver tical axis is the corrected image (output data) with the same scale from top to bottom.
72 Click the arro w ne xt to the channel-list bo x to select the channel from the drop-down men u. T o make adjustments to the color balance of the image , select the appropriate color channel. T o adjust the con- trast or brightness of the image without aff ecting the color , select the RGB channel.
73 1 1 2 2 Click the freehand curve b utton (1). The mouse pointer changes to the pencil tool when placed on the tone cur v e. Click and dr ag the pointer to dra w a ne w cur v e. Extreme image manipulations are possible with the freehand cur v e tool.
74 A shor t guide to tone cur v e corrections Image processing is a highly specialized and difficult field that tak es y ears of practice to master . This basic guide to using tone cur v es cov ers a f ew simple procedures to improv e y our pictures.
75 By selecting individual color channels on the tone cur v e, adjustments to the o v erall color of an image can be made. This can be used to eliminate unnatural color casts or add warmth to a pic- ture. If the image is too red, green, or b lue, simply drag the corresponding color- channel cur v e down until the color appears natural.

77 The input shadow slider sets the b lac k le v el. As the slider is mov ed to the right, an apparent increase in contrast can be seen in the displa y ed image. All pix els to the left of the slider are set to 0 and any image detail the y ma y contain will be lost.
78 On the tone cur v e / histogram palette , corrections can be made b y specifying a white, b lac k, and gra y point within the image. Locating an appropr iate neutral area within the image is critical to cor- rectly calibrate the softw are.
79 The white and blac k-point v alues are set to 255 and 0 f or each RGB lev el. Changing these values allow the calibr ation of an image with no true white or black. Double-clic k on either the white-point or b lac k-point button to activ ate the point-v alue-setting dialog bo x.
Amount: to adjust the contrast of the mask between 0% and 500%. If the v alue is too high, pixilation will be apparent; the image becomes noticeably rough or g rain y . 150% to 200% is recommended f or highly quality printed images. Radius: to increase the edge shar pness of the pix els.
81 Hue, satur ation, and lightness palette This palette adjusts the image in ref erence to the HSB color model. These controls can be used to manipulate the color image rather than producing a realistic representation. The HSB color model defines color based upon human perception rather than photogr aphic processes.

F or major prob lems or damage, or if a problem contin ues to reoccur frequently , contact your dealer or a Minolta ser vice f acility . Increase the amount of the system’ s largest unused block of memor y to more than 128MB.
With Macintosh operating systems , to use Pix el P olish when the utility is launched through Photoshop or Photoshop Elements, the largest unused b lock of memory in the system must be more than 128 MB. With the Photoshop application open, check the amount of the largest unused b lock of memory bef ore launching the utility .

A N INTR ODUCTION T O COLOR 90 Adding or subtracting equal par ts of red, green, and b lue will hav e no effect on the color balance . How e v er , it can change the ov erall image brightness and contrast. Usually , no more than two color channels are needed to color balance an image.
91 Changes in hue rotate the original color v alues though a color space and reas- signs a new hue based on the ne w posi- tion in that space. In this e xample, the original image was rotated 180°. For more on the hue, satur ation, and bright- ness palette, see page 81.
