7 CHAPTER 1: INTR ODUCTION HOW TO USE THIS MANUAL Make sure to r ead these operating instructions in their entirety befor e configuring a loudspeaker system with HMS-10s.
CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION 8 HMS-10 loudspeaker systems requir e an MPS-488 P exter- nal power supply . The single-space 19-inch rack unit receives b alanced audio from its XLR female inputs and routes the audio, along with 48 V of DC power , to its channel outputs.
9 CHAPTER 2: THE MPS-488 P POWER SUPPLY The MPS-488 P power supply de livers DC power and bal- anced audio to Meyer Sound loudspeakers that r equire a 48 V DC external power supply . The MPS-488 P is a multi- channel, switched-mode, r egulated power supply that occu- pies one space in a standard 19-inch rack.
CHAPTER 2: THE MPS-488 P POWER SUPPLY 10 NOTE: Since HMS-10s should only be con- nected to channel outputs 1, 3, 5, and 7, only the Load Current LEDs for channels with connected loudspeaker will light up (unlike the V oltage LEDs, which will all light up).
HMS-10 OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS 11 Routing One Input to Four Outputs T o route one audio input to four channel outputs: ■ Set all Link switches to ON. Routing T wo Inputs to T wo Outputs Each T o route two audio inputs to t wo channel outputs each: 1.
CHAPTER 2: THE MPS-488 P POWER SUPPLY 12 Each MPS-488 P comes with Phoenix 5-pin female cable connectors for assembling HMS-10 loudspeaker cables. For information on HMS-10 cable r equirements, see “HMS-10 Current Draw and Cable Requir ements” on page 15.
HMS-10 OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS 13 ■ Do not use a ground-lifting adap ter or cut the AC cable ground pin. ■ Keep all liquids away from the MPS-488 P to avoid haz - ards fr om electrical shock. ■ Do not operate the unit if the power cable s are frayed or broken.
CHAPTER 2: THE MPS-488 P POWER SUPPLY 14.
15 CHAPTER 3: THE HMS-10 LOUDSPEAKER THE HMS-10 CONNECTOR The HMS-10 receives DC power and balance d audio from a Phoenix 5-pin male connector on its top panel. The connec- tor’ s five pins include two for DC power (negative and posi- tive) and three for balanced aud io (shield, negative, and positive).
CHAPTER 3: THE HMS-10 LOUDSPEAKER 16 Cable Len gths and C able Gaug es for HMS-10 s When connecting an HMS-10 to an MPS-488 P channel out- put, you can use cable lengths up to 150 feet with only 1 dB of peak SPL loss using 18 A WG wire. Longer cable lengths are possible with heavier wir e gauges (see T able 2 and T able 3).
17 CHAPTER 4: MOUNTING THE HMS-10 The HMS-10 comes standar d with a fixed bracket; an adjustable bracket is also available for wall mounting the HMS-10 with downtilt or uptilt. This chapter describes how to mount the HMS-10 with these two mounting options.
CHAPTER 4: MOUNTING THE HMS-10 18 T o mount the HMS-10 with the fixed mount bracket: 1. Disassemble the fixed bracket by r emoving the two bot- tom screws. Sep arate the wall plate from the loud- speaker plate (labeled “Monitor”). Leave the loudspeaker plate attached to the HMS-10.
HMS-10 OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS 19 MOUNTING THE HMS-10 WITH THE ADJUSTABLE MOUNT BRACKET The HMS-10 can be wall mounted with the adjust able mount bracket at downtilt angles up to 13 degrees and uptilt angles up to 5 degr ees (uptilt).
CHAPTER 4: MOUNTING THE HMS-10 20 5. Adjust the tilt of the HMS-10 fro m –13 degrees (downtilt) to +5 degrees (up tilt). Tighten the four side screws to secure the HMS-10. NOTE: Make sure the four side screws are completely tightened to ensur e that the HMS-10 won’t move fr om its desir ed position.
21 APPENDIX A: HMS-10 ACCESSORIES The following HMS-10 accessories are available fr om Meyer Sound. NOTE: Belden 1502 is a composite cable comprised of two 18 A WG wires for DC power , two 22 AWG wir es for balanced audio, and one 24 A WG wire for the audio shield.
APPENDIX A: HMS-10 ACCESSORIES 22.
23 APPENDIX B: HMS-10 CABLE ASSEMBLY ASSEMBLING PHOENIX-TO-PHOENIX LOUDSPEAKER CABLES T o connect the HMS-10 loudspeaker dir ectly to the MPS-488 P power supply , you need a Phoenix 5-pin female to Phoenix 5-pin female cable. The following pr ocedure documents how to assemble this cable.
APPENDIX B: HMS-10 CABLE ASSEMBLY 24 3. Secure the conductors by tightening t he five screws in the Phoenix connector . 4. Repeat the previous steps and attach the other end of the cable to the other Phoenix connector . 5. V erify the wiring polarity is correct for both connectors.
