Black plate (17,1) q Seat Recline WARNING Do not drive with either front seat reclined: Sitting in a reclin ed position while the vehicle is moving is dangerous because you do not get the full protection from seat belts. During sudden braking or a collision, you can slide under the lap belt and suffer seriou s internal injur ies.
Black plate (18,1) CAUTION When returni ng a rear-reclined seatback to its upright position, make sure you hold onto the seatback with your other hand whi le operating the lever. If the sea tback is not supported, it will flip forward suddenly and could cause injury.

Black plate (25,1) q Split-Folding Rear Seatback T o fold the seatbacks CAUTION When operatin g the rear seatback knob, make sure you supp ort the seatback with your hand. If the seatback is not supported with you r hand, it will flip forw ard suddenly and could cause injury to the finger that pushes the rear seatback knob down.
Black plate (26,1) q Armrest The rear armrest in the center of the rear seatback can be used (no occupant in the center seat) or placed upright. Head Restraints Head restraints are intended to help protect you and the passengers from neck injury .
Black plate (27,1) Rear seat Removal/Installat ion T o remo ve the head restraint, pull it up while pressing the stop-catch. T o install the head restraint, press the uprights into the holes while pressing the stop-catch.
Black plate (28,1) NOTE l The active head restraints operate in a r ear-end collision. The head r estraints r eturn to their original position after the collision. l The method for adjusting the active head r estraints is the same as a normal head r estraint.
Black plate (29,1) WARNING Ø Be careful when using the seat warmer. The heat from the seat warmer may be too hot for some people, as ind icated belo w, and could cause a low-temperature burn.
Black plate (30,1) Seat Belt Precautions Seat belts help to decrease the possibility of severe injury during acciden ts and sudden stops. Mazda recommends that the driver and all passengers always wear seat belts. All of the seat belt retractors are designed to keep the lap/shoulder belts out of the way when not in use.
Black plate (31,1) WARNING Always wear your seat belt and ma ke sure all occu pants are properly restrained: Not wearing a seat belt is extremely dangerous. During a collis ion, occupa nts not wearing seat belts could hit someone or things ins ide the veh icle or even be thrown out of the vehicle .
Black plate (32,1) CAUTION Belt retraction may become diffic ult if the belts and rings are soiled, so try to keep them clean. For more details about cleaning the seat belts, refer to “ Cleaning the Lap/Shoulder Belt Webbing ” (page 8-60).
Black plate (33,1) q Automatic Locking Mode Always use the automatic locking mode to keep the child-restraint system from shifting to an unsafe position in the event of an acciden t. T o enable seat belt automatic locki ng mode, pull it all the way out and connect it as instructed on the child-restrai nt system.
Black plate (34,1) Seat Belt q Fastening the Seat Belt 1. Grasp the seat belt tongue. 2. Slowly pull out the lap/shoul der belt. Seat belt tongue Lap/shoulder belt 3. Insert the seat belt tongue into the seat belt buckle unti l you hear a click sound.
Black plate (35,1) q Unfastening the Seat Belt Depress the button on the seat b elt buckle. If the belt does not fully retr act, pull it out and check for kinks or twists. Then make sure it remains untwis ted as it retracts. Button NOTE If a belt does not fully retract, inspect it for kinks and twists.
Black plate (36,1) Front Seat Belt Pr etensioner and Load Limiting Systems For optimum protection, the driver and front passenger seat belts are equipp ed with pretensioner and load limiting systems. For both these syst ems to work properly you must wear the seat belt properly .
Black plate (37,1) Do not modify the components or wiring, or use elect ronic testing devic es on the pretensioner system: Modifying the componen ts or wiring of the pretensioner system, including the use of electronic testing devices is dangerous.
Black plate (38,1) q Air Bag/Front Seat Belt Pretensioner System W arning Beep If a malfunction is detected in the air bag/ front seat belt pretensioner systems and the warning light, a warning beep sound will be heard for about 5 seconds every minute.
Black plate (39,1) WARNING Do not use a seat belt extender unless it is necessar y: Using a seat belt extender when not necessary is dangerous. The sea t belt will be too long and not fit properly. In an accident, the seat belt will not provide adequate protection and you could be seriously injured.
Black plate (40,1) Seat Belt W arning Light/ Beep The seat belt war ning light ill uminates and a beep sound will be heard if the driver's seat belt is not fastened when the ignition is switch ed ON. Conditions of operat ion Condition Result The driver's seat belt is not fastened when the ignition is switched ON.

Black plate (42,1) Child Restraint Precautions Mazda strongly urges the use of child-restraint systems for children smal l enough to use them. Y ou are requi red by law to use a child-restraint system for children in the U.
Black plate (43,1) WARNING Use the correct size child -restraint system: For effective protection in vehicle accidents and sudden stops, a child must be properly restrain ed using a seat belt or child-restraint system depending on age and size. If not, the child could be seriously injured or even killed in an accident .
Black plate (44,1) Do not install a front -facing child -restraint system on the front passenger seat unless it is unavoidable: In a collision, th e force of a deploying air bag could cause serious injury or death to the child.
Black plate (45,1) Do not allow a child or anyone to lean over or against the side window of a vehicle with side and cur tain air bags: It is dangerous to allow anyone to lean over or against the side.
Black plate (46,1) Installing Child-Restraint Systems Accident statist ics reveal that a child is safer in the rear seat. The front passenger's seat is clear ly the worst choice for any child under 12, and with rear-facing child- restraint systems it is clearly unsafe due to air bags.

Expand the area between the seat bottom and the seatback slightly to verify the locations of the LA TCH lower anchors.

Black plate (107,1) q Locking, Unlocking with Key The driver's door can be locked /unlocked with the key . T urn the key toward the front to lock, toward the back to unlock. Lock Unlock NOTE If your vehicle is equipped with a fr ont passenger door key cylinder , the door can be locked/unlocked with the key .
Black plate (108,1) T o lock the front passenger door with the door-lock knob from the outside, push the door-lock knob to the lock position and close the door . This does not operate the other door locks. Door-lock knob NOTE l (W ith advanced key) The driver's door cannot be locked using the door-lock knob fr om the outside.
Black plate (109,1) Locking, unlocking with door -lock switch All doors and the lif tgate lock automatically when lock side is pressed. They all unlock when unlock side is pressed.
Black plate (1 10,1) q Rear Door Child Safety Locks These locks are intended to help prevent children from accide ntally opening the rear doors. Use them both whenever a child rides in the vehicle. If you slide the child safety lock to the lock position before c losing that door, the door cannot be opened from the inside.
Black plate (1 1 1,1) q Locking, Unlocking with T ransmitter (with Advanced Key) The liftgate can be locked /unlocked by operating the keyles s entry system transmitter, refer to Keyless Entry System (page 3-16).
