Black plate (18,1) CAUTION When returni ng a rear-reclined seatback to its upright pos ition, make sure you hold onto the seatback with your other han d while operating the lever. If th e seatback is not supported, it will flip forward suddenly and could cause injury.

Black plate (21,1) Change the seatb ack angle by pressing the front or rear side of the reclining switch . Release the switch at the desired position. q Height Adjustment (Driver's Seat) The seat height can be adjus ted by moving the switch up or down.
Black plate (22,1) T o raise a head restraint, pull it up to the desired position. T o lower the head restraint, press the stop- catch release, then push the head restraint down. Adjust the head restraint so that the top is even with the top of the passenger's ears, never the passenger's neck to prevent injury .

T o return the seatbacks to the upright position 1. Lift the seatbacks upright. 2. Pull on the top of the seatbacks from inside the vehicle to make sure they are locked.

Black plate (27,1) When using the rear seatbac k knobs: CAUTION When operatin g the rear seatbac k knob, make sure you supp ort the seatback with your hand. If the seatback is not supported with you r hand, it will flip forward sudd enly and could cause injury to the finger that pushes the rear seatback knob down.
Black plate (28,1) q Head Restraint (5-Door/Sport W agon) WARNING Always drive with the head restraints installed when seat s are being used and make sure they are properly adjusted: Driving with the head restr aints adjusted too low or rem oved is dangerous.
Black plate (29,1) Seat Belt Precautions Seat belts help to decrease the possibility of severe injury durin g accidents and sudden stops. Mazda recommends that the driver and all passengers always wear seat belt s. All of the seat belt retractors are designed to keep the lap/shoulder belts out of the way when not in use.
Black plate (30,1) WARNING Always wear your seat belt and ma ke sure all occupants are properly restrained: Not wearing a seat belt is extremely danger ous. During a collision, occupa nts not wearing seat belts could hit someone or th ings inside th e vehicle or even be thrown out of the vehicle.
Black plate (31,1) CAUTION Belt retraction may become diffic ult if the belts and rings are soiled, so try to keep them clean. For more details about cleaning the seat belts, refer to “ Cleaning the Lap/Shoulder Belt Webbing ” (page 8-58).
Black plate (32,1) q Automatic Locking Mode Always use the automatic locking mode to keep the child-res traint system from shif ting to an unsafe position in the event of an accident. T o enable seat belt automatic locki ng mode, pull it all the way out and connect it as instruct ed on the child-restrai nt system.

Black plate (34,1) q Unfastening the Seat Belts Depress the button on the buckle. If the belt does not fully retract, pull it out and check for kinks or twists. The n make sure it remains untwisted as it retracts. Button NOTE If a belt does not fully r etract, inspect it for kinks and twists.
Black plate (35,1) Front Seat Belt Pr etensioner and Load Limiting Systems For optimum protection, the driver and front passenger seat belts are equipped with pretensioner and load limiting systems. For both these systems to work properly you must wear the seat belt properly .
Black plate (36,1) Have your seat belts chang ed immediately if the pretensio ner or load limiter has been expended: One or both front air bags may deploy, and the corresponding pretensioner(s) may also deploy at the same time.
Black plate (37,1) q Air Bag/Front Seat Belt Pretensioner Systems W arning Light If the air bag/front seat belt prete nsioner system is working properly , the warning light illuminates when the ignition switch is turned to the ON po sition or after the engine is cranked.
Black plate (38,1) WARNING Fastening the Center-Rear Seat Bel t with Only One Buckle: Fastening the cente r-rear seat belt with only one buckle is dangerous. If only one pair of seat belt tongue and buckle, either tongue (A) and anchor buckle (B) or tongue (C) and anchor buckle (D), is fastened, the seat belt cannot provide full protecti on.
Black plate (39,1) CAUTION Always unfasten the lap portion of the belt before folding th e left-rear seatback. Leav ing the lap portion of the belt fastened could cause damage to the seat belt, buckle and seatback.
Black plate (40,1) Sport W agon T o stow the seat belt, retract the belt, put tongues (A) and (C) together and inser t them into the ce iling recess. (A) (C) Ceiling recess T o pull out the seat belt, slide tongue (A) with your finger while moving it downward, and slowly pull out the seat belt from the ce iling recess.
Black plate (41,1) WARNING Do not use a seat belt extender unles s it is necessar y: Using a seat belt extender when not necessary is dangerous. Th e seat belt will be too long and not fit properly. In an accident, the seat belt will not provide adequate protection and you could be seriously injured.
Black plate (42,1) Seat Belt W arning Light/ Beep The seat belt war ning light ill uminates and a beep sound will be heard if the driver's seat belt is not fastened when the ignition switch is turne d to the ON position.
Black plate (43,1) Child Restraint Precautions Mazda strongly urges the use of child-restrai nt systems for children smal l enough to use them. Y ou are required by law to use a child -restraint system for children in the U.
Black plate (44,1) WARNING Use the correct size child -restraint system: For effective protection in vehicle accident s and sudden stops, a child must be properly restrain ed using a seat belt or child-r estraint system depending on age and size. If not, the child could be seriously injured or even killed in an accident .
Black plate (45,1) Seating a child in a child-restraint system on the front pass enger seat is dangerous: Vehicles equipped with front passen ger seat weight sensors are also equipped with a front passenger air bag deactivat ion indicator light (page 2-37).

Black plate (59,1) Supplemental Restraint Systems (SRS) Precautions The front and side supplementa l restraint systems (SRS) include up to 6 air bags. Please verify which kind s of air bags are equipped on your vehicle by locat ing the “ SRS AIRBAG ” location indica tors.

Gases are produced to inflate the front air bags and after the inflation, the front air bags quickly deflate.

Fuel can burn skin and eyes and cause illness if ingested. Fuel spray is rele ased when there is pressure in the fuel tank and the fuel cap is removed too quickly.

If the light remains on (eve n after you have tightened the cap securely, driven, and restarted the engine sev eral times), it may indicate a different problem.
