Black plate (15,1) 2 Essential Safety Equipment Use of safety equipment, including seats, seat belt system, child-restraint systems and SRS air bags. Seats .......................................................... ....................................
Black plate (16,1) Front Seats W ARNING Do not modify or repla ce the front seats: Modifying or replacing the front seats such as replacing the up holstery or loosening any bolts is d angerous. The front seats contain air bag components essential to the supplemental restraint system.
Black plate (17,1) Make sure the lever returns to its original position and the seat is locked in place by attempting to push it forward and backward. q Seat Recline W ARNING Do not drive with the seats reclined: Sitting in a reclined position while the vehicle is movin g is dangerous because you don't get the full protection from seat belts.
Black plate (18,1) CAUTION When returning a rear-reclined seatbac k to its upright position, make sure you hold onto the seatback with your other hand while operating the lever . If the seatback is not suppor ted, it will flip forward suddenly and could cause injury .
Black plate (19,1) q Seat W armer í The front seats are electrica lly heated. The ignition switch must be in the ON position. Press the switch to turn the seat warmer on or off. When the switch is in the ON position, the indicator light will come on.
Black plate (20,1) W ARNING Do not drive with the seatback unlocked: The seatback plays an importa nt role in your protection in a vehicle. Leaving the seatback unlocked is dangerous as it can allow passeng ers to be ejected or thrown around and baggage to strike occupants in a sudden stop or collision, resulting in severe injury.
Black plate (21,1) q Split-Folding Rear Seatback T o fold the seatbacks CAUTION When operating the rear seatb ack knob, make sure you suppor t the seatback with your hand. If the seatback is not supported with your hand, it will flip forward suddenly and could cause injury to the finge r that pushes the rear seatback knob down.
Black plate (22,1) W ARNING When returning the seatback to the upright position, make sure there is no red indication: A rear seatback not full y returned and locked in the upright position is dangerous. Sudden stops or maneuvering could cause a seatbac k to flip forward suddenly resulting in injury.
Black plate (23,1) Removal T o remove the head restraint, press the stop-catch release, then pull up on the head restraint. q Armrest í The rear armrest in the center of the rear seatback can be used (no occupant in the center seat) or placed upright.
Black plate (24,1) Seat Belt Precautions Seat belts help to d ecrease the possibility of severe injury durin g accidents and sudden stops. Mazda recommends that the driver and all passengers always wear seat belts. All of the seat belt retr actors are designed to keep the lap/shoulder belts out of the way when not in use.
Black plate (25,1) W ARNING Have your seat belts changed immediately if the pretensioner or load limiter has been expended: One or both front air bags may deploy , and the corresponding pretensioner (s) may also deploy at the same time.
Black plate (26,1) q Pregnant W omen and Persons with Serious Medical Conditions Pregnant women shoul d always wear seat belts. Ask your doctor for specific recommendations. The lap belt should be worn SNUGL Y AND AS LOW AS POSSIBLE OVER THE HIPS. The shoulder belt should be worn across your shoulder properly , but never across the stomach area.
Black plate (27,1) Seat Belt (Except Center - Rear Position) NOTE When using the center-rear seat belt , refer to “ Center-Rear Position Seat Belt ” (page 2-18). q Fastening the Seat Belt 1. Grasp the tongue . 2. Slowly pull out the lap/shoul der belt.
Black plate (28,1) q Unfastening the Seat Belt Depress the button on the buckle. If the belt does not fully retract, pull it out and check for kinks or twists. Then make sure it remains untwisted as it retr acts. Button NOTE If a belt does not fully retract, inspect it for kinks and twists.
Black plate (29,1) Front Seat Belt Pretensioner and Load Limiting Systems For optimum protection, the driver and front passenger seat belts are equipped with pretensioner and load limiting systems. For both these syst ems to work properly you must wear the seat belt properly .
Black plate (30,1) W ARNING Have your seat belt s changed immediately if the prete nsioner or load limiter has been expended: One or both front air bags may deploy , and the corresponding pretensioner(s) may also deploy at the same time.
Black plate (31,1) q Air Bag/Front Seat Belt Pretensioner System W arning Light If the air bag/front seat belt pretensioner system is working properly , the warning light illuminates when the ignition switch is turned to the ON po sition or after the engine is cranked.
Black plate (32,1) Center -Rear Position Seat Belt (3-Point T ype) Before using the center-rear lap/shoul der belt make sure tongue (A) and anchor buckle (B) are fastened. (A) (B) q Fastening the Seat Belt 1. Grasp the tongue (C). 2. Slowly pull out the lap/shoul der belt.
Black plate (33,1) W ARNING Positioning the Lap Portion of the Seat Belt: The lap portion of the seat belt worn too high is dangerou s. In a collision, this would concentrate the impact force directly on the abdominal area, causing serious injur y . W e ar the lap portion of the belt snugly and as low as possible.
Black plate (34,1) q Fastening the Lap Portion of the Seat Belt Grasp tongue (A) and insert it into the anchor buckle (B) until you hear a click. It is now secure for passenger use. NOTE After returning the left-rear seatback to its upright position, fasten the lap portion of the belt.
Black plate (35,1) Seat Belt Extender If your seat belt is not long enough, even when fully extended, a seat belt extender may be available to you at no charge from your Authorized Mazda Dealer . This extender will be only for you and for the particular vehicle and seat.
Black plate (36,1) Seat Belt W arning Light/Beep The seat belt war ning light illuminates and a beep sound will be heard if the driver's seat belt is not fastened when the ignition switch is turned to the ON position.
Black plate (37,1) Driver seated/Front passenge r seated The seat belt warning funct ion reminds the front passenger to fasten the seat belt according to the chart below .
Black plate (38,1) Child Restraint Precautions Mazda strongly urges the use of child-restraint syst ems for children small enough to use them. Y ou are required by law to use a child-restraint system for children in the U.
Black plate (39,1) W ARNING Use the correct size child-restraint system: For effective protection in vehicle accidents and sudden stops, a child must be properly restrained using a seat belt or child-restraint system depending on age and size. If not, the child could be seriously injur ed or even killed in an accident.
Black plate (40,1) W ARNING Seating a child in a child-restrai nt system on the front passeng er seat is dangerous: V ehicles equ ipped with front passenger seat weight sensors are also equipped with a front passenger air bag deactivation indicator light (page 2-33).
Black plate (41,1) W ARNING Never use one seat belt on more than one person at a time: Using one seat belt for more than one person at a time is dangerous. A seat belt used in this way cannot spread the impact forces proper ly and the two p assengers could be crushed together and seriously injur ed or even killed.
Black plate (42,1) Installing Child-Restraint Systems Accident statistics reveal that a child is safer in the rear seat. The front passenger's seat is clearly the worst choice for any child under 12, and wi th rear-facing child- restraint systems it is clearly unsafe due to air bags.
Black plate (43,1) 1. Make sure the seatback is secure ly latched by pushing it back until it is fully locked. 2. Secure the child-res traint system with the lap portion of the lap/shoulder belt. See the manufacturer's instruct ions on the child-restraint system for belt routing instructions.

Black plate (360,1) Uniform Tire Quality Grading System (UTQGS) This information relates to the tire grading system developed by the U.S. National Highway Traff ic Safety Administration for grading tires by tread wear, traction, and temperature performance.
Black plate (361,1) W ARNING The temperature grade for this tire is established for a tire that is properly inflated and not overloaded. Exc essive speed, und erinflation, or e xcessive loadin g, either separately or in combinati on, can cau se heat buildup and possi ble tire failure.
Black plate (362,1) Tir e Labeling Federal law requires tir e manufacturers to place standardized information on the sidewall of all tires. This information identifies and descri bes the fundamental characteri stics of the tir e and also provides a tire identification numbe r for safety standard certificati on and in case of a recall.
Black plate (363,1) 1 1. T read wear, traction and temperature grades 12. Max. permissible inflation press ure 13. SAFETY W ARNING P215/65R15 95H is an example of a tire size and load index rating. Here is an explanation of the various components of that tire size and load index rating.
Black plate (364,1) H “ H ” is the speed rating. The speed rating denotes the maximum speed for which the use of the tire is rated. Letter Rating Speed Rating Q 99 mph R 106 mph S 112 mph T 1 18 m.
Black plate (365,1) T read W ear , T raction and T emperature Grades T read wear : The tread wear grade is a comparative rating based on the wear rate of the tire when tested under controlle d conditions on a specified government test course.

Under-inflation is the most commo n cause of failures in any kind of tire and may result in severe crackin g, tread separation or “ blowout ” , with une xpected loss of vehicle control and increased risk of injury.
Black plate (370,1) NOTE W arm tires normally exceed recommende d pressures. Don't release air from warm tires to adjust the pressure. Under-inflation can cause serious failures an d accidents. Over-inflation can produce a harsh ride and the greater possibil ity of damage from road hazards.
Black plate (371,1) Tir e Maintenance Improper or inadequate vehicle maintenanc e can cause tires to wear abnormally . Here are some important mai ntenance points: q Tire Inflation Pr essure Inspect all tire press ure monthly (including the spare) when the tires are cold.
Black plate (372,1) CAUTION Rotate unidirectional tires and radial tires that have an asymmet rical tread pattern or studs only from front to rear, not from side to side.
Black plate (373,1) NOTE T ires degrade over time, even when they are no t being used on the road. It is recommended that tires general ly be replaced when they are 6 years or older . Heat caused by hot climates or frequent high loading conditions can acceler ate the aging process.
Black plate (374,1) V ehicle Loading W ARNING Do not taw a trailer with this vehicle: T owing a trailer with this vehicle is dangerous because it has not b een designed to tow a trailer and doing so will affect the drive system which could result in vehicle damage.
