10 T urning on Y our VCR • Befor e turning on your VCR, mak e sure there ar e batteries in the remote contr ol and the VCR, TV , and Cable Box/DBS (if applicable) ar e connected. • The menus will contin ue to appear ev er y time you turn on the VCR until you complete the steps on pages 10-11.

Daylight-Savings Time 19 6 Press the MENU button. Follo w the steps below to program the VCR so its clock will move forwar d one hour in April and turn back one hour in October . 3 Press the PLA Y 8 or ST OP 9 button to select CLOCK, then press the OK/ST A TUS button.
20 Language Selection 5 Press the MENU button. Follow the steps belo w to change the language of the on-screen displa ys and menus. 3 Press the PLA Y 8 or ST OP 9 button to select LAN- GU A GE. • If you accidentally select Spanish or French and need English, follo w these steps .

Setting the Remote Contr ol to Oper ate a TV 27 • If you had to pr ogram the remote control to oper ate your TV , whenever you replace the batteries in the remote contr ol, you will have to pro- gram the r emote control again. • There is no guar antee that the remote contr ol will work your TV .
28 Setting the Remote Contr ol to Oper ate a Cable Bo x/DBS • If you had to pr ogram the remote control to oper ate your Cable Box/DBS, whenever you replace the batteries in the remote control, you must pr ogram the remote contr ol again. • The remote contr ol may only oper- ate some features of your Cable Box/DBS.
Helpful Hints • While “- - - -” is blinking on the VCR display panel after inser t a tape , the tape will run for a f ew seconds to search for the tape number .
30 Recor ding 9 Press the ST OP 9 button to stop recor ding. The light will disappear fr om the displa y panel. • If the REC(or d)/O TR button is pressed while a tape without a recor d tab is in the VCR, PRO TECT- ED C ASSETTE C ANNO T RECORD will appear on the screen briefly.

This VCR allows r ecording in Super VHS ET (Expansion T echnology). Y ou can play back those cassettes r ecorded in S-VHS ET on a VCR equipped with S-VHS ET . Y ou can record with S-VHS picture quality on VHS cassettes. 1 Befor e you begin the r ecording, press the S-VHS ET but- ton on the fr ont panel so that the button lights.
Recor ding One Channel/W atching Another 33 5 T o return to the channel being r ecorded, use the TV remote contr ol to select channel 03 or 04 (whichev er chan- nel the CH3/CH4 switch on the back of the VCR is set to).
3 Press the REC(or d)/O TR button repeatedl y until the desired r ecording length appears briefl y on the screen and on the displa y panel. The light will flash on the display panel. (The recor ding length will not appear on the screen if ON SCREEN MODE is set to OFF .
4,5 6 3 2 Insert a tape in the VCR. • Pressing the PO WER button to turn on the VCR will set A UT O DBS RECORD LINK to OFF automatically. • Do not turn on the DBS before the pro gram star ts; otherwise , the VCR will star t recor ding when the DBS power is turned on.

Y ou’ll notice that some stations ha ve VCR Plus+ and Cable/TV channel numbers that are the same, and other stations ha ve channel numbers that do not match.
• If you enter an incorrect PlusCode pro- gramming number at step 4, ERROR- RE-ENTER CODE will flash on the screen after step 5. Enter the correct PlusCode pro gramming number . Helpful Hint Follow the steps belo w to program a timer r ecording using PlusCode pr ogramming numbers.
Timer Recor ding with the VCR Plus+ Pr ogr amming System (cont’ d) 39 T urn off the VCR for a timer r ecording! Put a tape in the VCR. Leav e the Cable Bo x/DBS on. 9 Press the PO WER button to turn off the VCR. The VCR must be turned off for a timer r ecording to take place.

Quick Pr ogr amming (cont’ d) 41 5 Press the Number 2/ST OP+ or Number 5/ST OP– button to set the recor ding’ s stop time . Ever y time you pr ess a but- ton, the stop time changes in one-minute increments. If you press and hold a button, the stop time changes in 30-minute increments.
8 • If you want to r ecord the pr ogram one time only , go to step 9. Y ou ma y also press the Number 8/D AIL Y or Number 9/WEEKL Y button repeatedl y to select a ONE TIME PR OGRAM. • If you want to r ecord the pr ogram daily , press the Number 8/D AIL Y button so that D AIL Y PROGRAM appears at the top of the scr een.
10 Press the PO WER button to turn off the VCR. The r light will appear on the displa y panel. (The r light and the Cassette- Inside light will flash when you turn off the VCR if there is not a tape in the VCR.) The VCR must be turned off for a timer recor ding to take place.
3 The ST AR T time will continue to appear on the displa y panel. To set the ST OP time, press the PLA Y 8 or ST OP 9 button. Every time you pr ess a button, the stop time changes in one- minute incr ements. If you pr ess and hold a button, the stop time changes in 30-minute incr ements.
• T o stop a timer recor ding that is in pro gress , press the PO WER button on the remote contr ol. See page 78 for more hints. Helpful Hint 1 Press the VCR button, then press the TIMER button. Timer Recor ding Speed Setting 47 If a pr ogram is recording in SP and ther e is not enough tape to recor d the entire pr ogram, the VCR automatically s witches to SLP to allow complete r ecording if TIMER REC SPEED is set to AUT O . This featur e is especially useful when you set a timer r ecording for a pr ogram that is more than two hours long.
6 Press the PLA Y button on VCR 1 and the REC(ord)/O TR button on VCR 2 at the same time. The light will appear on the VCR 2 displa y panel. • Unauthorized recor ding of copyright- ed television pr ograms, video tapes , or other materials may infr inge on the rights of copyr ight owners and violate copyright laws .
Audio Dubbing 49 • When monitoring the sound dur ing Audio Dubbing, the normal soundtrack is automatically selected. If you wish to hear the Hi-Fi sound, Set “A UDIO OUT” to “HIFI” in the VCR SET UP menu.
50 Connecting the Contr oller If you ar e using a Cable Box/DBS, connect the Controller to y our VCR. The Contr oller will automatically select channels at the Cable Box/DBS during a timer r ecording. Lea ve your Cable Bo x/DBS turned on dur- ing a timer recor ding.
5 Press the PLA Y 8 or ST OP 9 button to select the output channel of your Cab le Box, then press the OK/ST A TUS but- ton. The display sho wn below will appear . If C ABLE BO X USERS SET CLOCK MANUALL Y appears, follow steps 4-8 on page 15, then go to step 6 on page 52.
• If your Cable Bo x does not respond to any of the codes at step 7, the Controller will not change channels at the Cable Box during a timer recor ding. Y ou must select the chan- nel to be recor ded at the Cable Box before a timer r ecording begins.

• If your DBS does not respond to the code at step 7, the Controller will not change channels at the DBS during a timer recording. In this case , you must select the channel to be recor ded at the DBS before a timer recor ding begins . Enter the DBS output channel (03 or 04) at step 3 on page 40.
This VCR can r eceive and recor d programs br oadcast in stereo or second audio . It can also play back ta pes recorded in ster eo or second audio . • Second Audio Y ou can pr ogram your VCR so you can hear a pr ogram that is being broadcast in second audio or a tape that was recor ded in second audio.
T o r eceive and recor d programs br oadcast in second audio, follow steps 1-6. T o receiv e and record a pr o- gram broadcast in ster eo , make one of the connections sho wn, then follow steps 1-6. 6 Record the pr ogram as usual. Details are on page 30.
• During playbac k, Hi-Fi stereo may temporarily re ver t to normal audio when you adjust tracking. This is nor- mal. • If Hi-Fi stereo continually r ever ts to normal audio during playbac k, you may want to pr ess the FF 3 button to select MONO at step 3.
58 Video Stabiliz er • Regar dless of the setting, this feature has no effect during recording or special effects playback. Helpful Hint 4 Press the MENU button. Y ou can corr ect vertical vibration when playing back ta pes. When VIDEO ST ABILIZER is set to ON, vertical vibration will be cor- rected automaticall y .
Y ou can mak e the tape pla yback picture softer , sharper , more natu- ral, or more distinct by adjusting the SmartPicture setting. F ollow the steps below to adjust the SmartPicture setting.
• DSPC does not work during a Record Link. • DSPC mak es its adjustments bef ore a timer recor ding begins . • Since DSPC mak es its adjustments before r ecording actually star ts , there is a brief delay after the REC(ord)/O TR button is pressed.
Index Sear ch When you mak e a recor ding, the VCR automatically places an index code at the beginning of the recor ding. Essentially , an index code is a type of “book- mark” for y our tape . This featur e is useful if you ha ve sev eral different pr o- grams recor ded on a single tape.

Playback Options (cont'd) 63 Viewing Pictur e in Slo w to Fast Motion 1 First, press the JOG/SHTL (shuttle) button while in the Pla y or Still mode . The JOG/SHTL button will light. 2 Next, turn the outer ring (the Shuttle ring) in either direction.
Intr oduction The T ape Manager Featur e is a very helpful and powerful assis- tant. The T ape Manager will tell you; - on which tape y ou find your recor ded programs.
T o check memor y With this function, you can check the amount of used memory for the tape manger data. 1 Press the VCR button, then press the MENU button. Press the PLA Y 8 or ST OP 9 button to select T APE MANA GER, then press the OK/ST A TUS button.
1- 8 Title Editing When you r ecord a TV program with this VCR, the VCR automatically recor ds the recording start and stop time, date and channel in each program title. If the tape is recorded f or the first time , the tape number and the date are r ecorded in the tape title.

72 T ape Manager (T o Delete T ape fr om Pr ogr am Data) 4 T o delete the tape data, Press the CLEAR button. T o delete the pro gram data, press the PLA Y 8 or ST OP 9 button to select the pr ogram you want to delete, then press the CLEAR button .
Y ou can disable the T ape Manager functions if you don’ t want to use it. 1 Press the VCR button, then press the MENU button. The Menu scr een appears. 2 Press the PLA Y 8 or ST OP 9 button to select T APE MAN- A GER, then press the OK/ST A TUS button.
The Child Lock featur e disables the buttons on the VCR and remote contr ol. • If you lose your remote contr ol when Child Lock is on, contact Philips . Helpful Hint 2 T o cancel Child Lock, press the VCR button, then press and hold the PO WER button on the r emote control for more than 10 seconds until the VCR po wer comes on.
Blue Backgr ound 75 If you want the TV scr een to be solid blue when a weak signal is receiv ed, set BLUE B A CKGR OUND to ON. The screen will be blue and the sound will be muted. Or , if you want to r eceive the weak signal, set BLUE B A CKGR OUND to OFF .
Automatic Pla yback When you put a ta pe in the VCR, the power will come on automaticall y . If the tape’ s recor d tab is missing, pla yback will begin. Y ou can not inser t a tape without a recor d tab if the VCR pow er is off and a timer recording is set.
Glossar y 77 A UDIO IN/OUT Jacks: jacks located on the front and back of the VCR which are used to recor d audio from another sour ce (IN) or to send audio to another system (OUT). Automatic Channel Pr ogramming: process in which the VCR scans all a vailable channels and places the ones you r eceive in its memory .
