1 INTR ODUCTION Thank y ou for purchasing an Lo wrance ® GlobalMap 12™. With its large LCD screen, easy to use menus , and outstanding perf or mance , we think y ou’ll be happ y with this product f or man y y ears. The GlobalMap 12 can be used f or fishing, hiking, canoeing, offshore boating, and just about an y other ground-based activity .
2 INST ALLA TION The GlobalMap 12 oper ates from six AA batter ies or from 6 to 35 v olts DC . The cigarette lighter adapter included with y our unit plugs into vir tu- ally an y v ehicle’ s electrical system.
3 B A TTER Y INST ALLA TION The GlobalMap 12 requires six AA batteries. W e recommend DURA CELL ® alkaline batteries, b ut other brands will work. Y ou can use lithium batteries which will last longer than alkaline batteries (but cost more) or recharge- ab le ni-cad batter ies (won’t last as long as standard alkalines).
4 ANTENNA Y our GlobalMap 12 has a remov ab le antenna that folds ov er the displa y when the unit is not in use. This pre v ents damage to the displa y . T o open the antenna, simply lift on an edge and r aise it to the desired position. The antenna is a quic k release design, simplifying its remov al and installation.
5 MAP CAR TRIDGE INST ALLA TION The GlobalMap 12 uses IMS Smar tMap™ and W or ldMap™, C-Map™, and Na vionics™ car tridges, all of which are pac kaged in a car tridge hous- ing specifically designed f or Lo wrance mapping products . The IMS Smar tMap™ car tridges contain digitized data of o ver 120,000 bodies of w ater .
6 REMO VING A CARTRIDGE If y ou hav e difficulty removing a car tr idge , use the bac k cov er as a re- mo val tool. Simply press one side of the cov er against the r idge on the car tr idge and gently push towards the bottom of the unit. Don’t use a corner of the cov er - it could damage it.
7 OPERA TION T urning P o wer On T o tur n the GlobalMap 12 on, simply press the PWR k ey . A screen similar to the one at right appears. Press the EXIT k ey to erase this screen. MENUS Most of the adjustments and f eatures are f ound on “menus”. Pressing the MENU k ey lets y ou view the men us .
8 Once the GlobalMap 12 loc ks on to the satellites and finds your position, it stores the satellite data in its memor y . The ne xt time y ou use the unit, it should tak e much less time to loc k on. T o use y our GlobalMap 12, first take it outside , a wa y from trees and buildings.
9 Using the down arro w ke y , highlight the “Ini- tialize GPS Receiv er” menu, then press the right arrow ke y . The screen shown below ap- pears ne xt. This is the GPS initialization screen. The posi- tion, altitude, time , and date the GPS receiver is currently using to find the satellites is shown at the bottom of this screen.
10 k ey . The unit returns to the GPS SETUP menu with y our local latitude and longitude showing in the bo x at the bottom of the screen. Enter Man ually T o change the position by man ually entering the latitude and longitude , press the MENU ke y , then highlight the “GPS SETUP” label and press the right arrow k ey .
11 WINDO WS (Group A) MAPPING (Map 3) NA VIGA TION (Nav 1) IMPOR T ANT! If the data shown in digital n umbers on any screen is flashing, it means that data is in va lid. DO NO T REL Y ON ANY NUMBERS THA T ARE FLASH- ING! Usually , this happens when the GPS receiv er has lost its lock on the satellites .
12 Navigation Screens There are tw o navigation screens . Nav screen n umber one shows a gr aphi- cal vie w of your trip , the other screen shows all na vigation details in large digital numbers . Nav Screen #1 This screen is dominated b y a compass rose.
13 course has nothing to do with y our present position, except f or your star t- ing location.) It’ s shown as a dotted line on the NA V 1 displa y . This is sho wn as a reminder so that if you de viate from your original course, y ou can easily return to it.
14 Mapping The GlobalMap 12 has a ground map of the w orld built inside. This map has the majority of its detail in f ar souther n Canada, the continental United States and Ha waiian islands , nor thern Mexico , the Bahamas , and Ber muda. The background map sho ws when the GlobalMap 12 is first tur ned on, with or without a map car tridge.
15 MAP 1 MAP 2 MAP 3 T o view the other mapping screens , press the P A GES ke y . Press the up or do wn arrow k ey to highlight the "MAP 1" label. Now press the right or left arro w ke y to select a different mapping screen. Press the EXIT ke y to erase the pages men u.
16 The latitude/longitude of the cursor shows in the bo x at the top of the screen whene v er the cursor is activ ated. A UT OZOOM Gener ally , when you tra vel using a mapping receiv er lik e the GlobalMap 12, y ou spend some amount of time zooming in and out, looking at detail or the whole route between the star t and destination.
17 EAR TH MAP OPTIONS The ear th map consists of the built-in bac kground map of the world, plus an y car tr idge that is attached to the GlobalMap 12. T o change the Ear th map options , first press the MENU ke y , then press the up or down arro w k e ys until the Ear th Map label appears.
18 the boundaries of the Oklahoma - East IMS Smar tMap car tridge. The def ault for this f ea- ture is on. Press the left arrow k e y on the “MAP BOUNDS” label to tur n them off. Earth Map On/Off Y ou can tur n the ear th map completely off , clearing the screen of all ground detail (includ- ing IMS Smar tMap car tridge detail).
19 Detail Cartridg e The GlobalMap 12 has two car tr idge slots in its back. Either one can hold a IMS Smar tMap , Navionics, or C-MAP car tr idge. The unit can only show detail from one type of car tr idge at a time. In other words , you can’t show detail from an IMS Smar tMap and a C-MAP car tr idge at the same time.
20 Fill With Gra y When the GlobalMap 12 is first turned on, all water is filled with gra y to distinguish it from land, which is clear . (See belo w) T o make the land fill with gr a y and water remain clear , press the down arro w k ey until the “Fill With Gr a y” menu is highlighted, then press the left arro w k ey .
21 In the course-up mode , the screen is lock ed into y our or iginal bearing to the recalled wa y - point, regardless of y our trac k. (Note: the trac k- up and course-up modes do not w or k when the unit is z oomed-in on an area cov ered by a C-Map or Na vionics car tr idge.
22 Set Visible Plot T rails The plot trail can be turned off, if desired. T o tur n it off , press the up or down arrow k ey until the “Set Visible Plot T rails” menu is highlighted.
23 T o change the update, highlight the “Set Plot- ter Update Criter ia” menu item, then press the right arrow k ey . The screen at r ight appears. T o change the update to distance, press the right arrow ke y while the “Plot Update Criteria” menu is highlighted.
24 MO VE CURSOR T O LOCA TION PRESS ENT , SELECT ICON, PRESS ENT PRESS EXIT T O ERASE CURSOR Place Icon - Cur sor Location T o place an icon at cursor's location, first use the arrow k e ys to mov e the cursor to the position that y ou want to place the icon.
25 T o remov e only cer tain icons, highlight the “Delete Icons F rom Map” label. Press the right arrow k ey . The unit retur ns to the mapping screen with the cursor centered on y our present position. Use the arrow k eys to mo v e the cursor to the icon on the map that y ou wish to er ase .

27 ing the satellite , or a "S" if the receiver is searching f or it. EL V is the ele v a- tion of the satellite abo ve the horizon; AZM is the azimuth, or direction of the satellite from y our location. SNR is the signal-to-noise ratio . The higher the SNR, the better .
28 Cloc k Set If the time shown on the cloc k display is not y our local time, change it using the “Clock Set” function. T o do this, press the MENU k ey , then press the up or down arrow k e ys until the “Clock Set” label is highlighted. Press the right arrow k ey .
29 other words , if you set the alar m to go off at 7:00 a.m., then the GlobalMap 12 will ha v e to be on at 7:00 a.m., also . TIMERS The GlobalMap 12 has two timers b uilt in. One is a countdown timer and the other is a count- up timer . The countdown timer counts down from the time y ou put in to z ero .
30 REPR OGRAM BO XES The digital bo xes on the MAP 3 and both NA V screens can be repro- gr ammed. The changes you mak e to the screen will remain in memor y , e ven if all po wer is remo ved from the unit. Y ou can, how e ver , return the bo xes to the f actor y settings from the “Preset Groups” item in the “System Setup” menu.
31 SELECT “REPROGRAM BO XES” FR OM MAIN MENU . THE BO X SELECTION SCREEN APPEARS . PRESS THE RIGHT ARR O W KEY UNTIL THE DESIRED BO X APPEARS. THIS IS THE FIRST WINDO W THA T WE W ANT TO USE. PRESS THE UP ARRO W KEY T O SELECT IT . THE FIRST BO X IS PLA CED A T THE TO P .
32 Ev er y time you sa ve a w a ypoint, the date and time are logged along with the position data. An icon symbol is also automatically assigned to the w ay- point. Y ou can edit the icon symbol, if you wish. See the ICONS section in this manual f or more inf ormation.
33 ber method. Remember , the method of sa ving y our present position and the cursor’ s position is identical. Edit Lat/Lon The GlobalMap 12 lets y ou enter any latitude/lon- gitude using the k e yboard and sav e it under any w aypoint n umber , from 1 to 250.

35 Mo ve a W a ypoint Y ou can mov e all inf or mation from one wa ypoint number to another . In this e xample , we’ll mov e all of the inf or mation in w a ypoint number one to w a y- point number 10. T o do this, go to the second w a y- point menu page .
36 Once y ou hav e the first wa ypoint showing on the screen, then y ou need to choose the other wa y - point that y ou’ re going to measure. Highlight the “Select” label at the top of the screen, then press the right arrow k e y to select “B”.
37 press the left or right arrow k eys until the desired route number appears . In this e xample , how e v er , we’ll use route number one . Beneath the route number is the route name men u . If you wish to name the route, highlight the “NAME” field, then press the r ight arro w k e y .
38 Contin ue selecting wa ypoints until the route is com- plete. As y ou add wa ypoints to the list, the bear ing and distance from each w a ypoint to the one previ- ous is shown to the right of the w a ypoint’ s name. In this e xample, the second wa ypoint in the list is 104 degrees and 30.
39 Follo wing a Route T o f ollow a route, first recall it b y pressing the MENU k ey , highlighting the “R OUTES” label, then high- lighting the “R UN ROUTE” label and press the right arrow k e y . The screen shown at r ight appears. The b lack bo x is on the “Route # 01” label.
40 Delete a Route T o erase a route from memory , first press the WPT k ey , then go to the Route Planning menu on the second user wa ypoint page. Switch to the route number y ou wish to erase, then mo v e the blac k bo x to the “Delete Route” label.
41 MO VE CURSOR T O LOCA TION PRESS MENU KEY , THEN PRESS RIGHT ARRO W KEY NA VIGA TING T O CURSOR LOCA TION Navigating to a cur sor location The GlobalMap 12 lets y ou na vigation to a location without stor ing it in the w a ypoint database by using the map and cursor .
42 CANCEL NA VIGA TION The GlobalMap 12 continues to na vigate to a re- called w aypoint, the last w a ypoint in a route, or the cursor position until y ou stop it. T o stop the navigation function, press the MENU k ey , then press the up or down arro w k e ys until the “Cancel Na vigation” label is highlighted.
43 last kno wn trac k direction. When y ou resume speed, all f eatures operate normally . When y ou’ re stopped at a traffic light, the trac k holding feature is useful to pre vent the anno ying random numbers from appearing on the displa y while y ou're stopped.
44 PCF (P osition Correction Factor) Another method used to mak e your displa y match a char t or map is called “PCF” or P osition Correction F actor . This unit giv es you the capability to mo ve or offset the position sho wn on the display to match one on the char t .
45 Units of Measure The GlobalMap 12 can sho w its data in man y dif- f erent formats. F or e xample, distance can be dis- pla yed in statute miles (MI), nautical miles (NM), or kilometers (KM). The f ollowing can be changed on the Units of Mea- sure menu: (Defaults shown in bold ) Distance .

47 Configure NMEA Output Press the do wn arrow k ey on the “NMEA/DGPS” menu until the “Configure NMEA Output” menu is highlighted, then press the right arrow k e y . A screen similar to the one at right appears. NMEA 0183 V ersion There are two v ersions of the NMEA data, 1.

50 NAME Y ou can personalize y our GPS receiv er by entering your name , social security number or an y I.D . you desire . T o enter a name, first highlight the “Name Input” label on the System Setup men u. Press the right arrow k e y . The screen shown at r ight appears.
51 GPS Update Rate/Battery Sav e Changing the update rate conserves battery power and lengthens the batter y lif e. The update rate is the length of time it takes the receiver to send data to the displa y . In other w ords, nor mally the receiv er sends po- sition data once e ver y second.
52 press the right arrow k e y . A screen similar to the one at right appears after se veral seconds . A mes- sages shows if the unit passed the self-test, or f ailed. If the unit fails the self-test, contact the Lo w- rance customer service depar tment.

56 Use Arr ow K eys to Steer This option lets y ou change both the course and speed on the screen as the simulator is running. T o do this , highlight the “User Arro w K eys to Steer” label, then press the right arrow k e y . The screen sho wn at r ight appears.
