1 INTR ODUCTION W elcome to the e xciting world of GPS! Whether y ou’ re a first-time user or a prof essional na vigator , you’ll find the GlobalNa v 200 is a full-f eatured GPS receiv er at a pr ice that w as impossible just a f ew y ears ago .
S/A - What is it? Another f actor that greatly influences the receiv er’ s ability to deter mine position is SA. The United States gov er nment intentionally degrades the satellites signal f or civilian users. They introduce small errors into the satellite’ s signals that makes the GPS receiv er less accurate.
GETTING ST ARTED P ower This unit oper ates from four AA batteries, or one DURA CELL ® NiMH rechargeab le batter y , or from 5 to 16 v olts DC using a CA-2 e xter nal po wer cable (not included). If the pow er cable is used, the unit automati- cally s witches to it if the exter nal po wer is greater than the battery voltage.
4 KEYBO ARD The k eyboard has tw elve k e ys. The arrow ke ys are tied to most of the f eatures, letting y ou easily mov e the plotter’ s cursor , na vigate through the menus , mak e selections from menus , and other tasks . The WPT k ey lets y ou create, sav e, and recall w aypoints and routes .
5 OPERA TION T urning P o wer On T o tur n the GlobalNa v 200 on, simply press the PWR k e y . A screen similar to the one at right ap- pears. Read the message on the screen, then press the EXIT k ey to erase it. The GlobalNav 200 is now ready f or use .
6 tr y to use it under a car por t, cov ered boat dock, or inside a b uilding. T ur n the po wer on, press the EXIT ke y to erase the opening message and w atch the displa y . As y ou wait f or the GlobalNa v 200 to find your position, y ou’ll see num- bers flashing on the displa y .
7 If y our latitude is south, press the up or do wn ar- ro w ke y to change it. If it is nor th, press the r ight arrow k ey to mo v e the change box to the first n um- ber in the latitude . No w press the up arrow k e y to increase the number or the do wn arrow k e y to de- crease it.
8 POSITION/NA VIGA TION DISPLA YS The GlobalNa v 200 has navigation, plotter , and windows group pages . These screens were designed to sho w data that is used most often. The three def ault screens are sho wn belo w . NA V -1 PLO T -1 GR OUP A T o change screens, simply press the P A GES k ey .
9 Nav Screen #1 This screen is dominated b y a compass rose (See the screen at right.) Y our position is in the center of the circle, designated b y an arro w that alwa ys points straight up . Y our trac k (direction of tra vel) is indicated b y an arrow pointing down tow ard the compass rose at the top center of the screen.
10 has nothing to do with y our present position, e xcept f or your star ting loca- tion.) It’ s sho wn as a dotted line on the NA V 1 displa y . This is sho wn as a reminder so that if y ou deviate from y our original course, y ou can easily return to it.
11 Plotter The plotter lets y ou see your course and tr ack from a “birds-ey e” vie w . If you’v e recalled a wa ypoint, the plotter sho w your star ting location, present position, and destination. How e ver , you don’t ha ve to recall a w a ypoint to use the plotter .
12 Y ou can mov e the cursor around the display b y pressing the arro w k eys in the direction y ou w ant it to mo ve . This lets you vie w diff erent areas of the plotter , aw a y from y our present position.
13 TRA CK-UP MODE In the e xamples shown belo w , we're tra velling southeast (about 150° mag- netic). In the nor th-up view , the present position indicator appears to mo v e tow ards the lo wer r ight cor ner of the screen. The anchor icon shown on the right side of the screen is actually on our left.
14 Grid Lines The GlobalNa v 200 can place gr id lines on the plotter to help y ou see your position, or the posi- tion of wa ypoints and icons. T o do this, highlight the “Grid” label on the “Plotter Options” menu, then press the r ight arrow k ey to tur n them on.
Place Icon - Cur sor Location T o place an icon at cursor's location, first use the arrow k e ys to mov e the cursor to the position that y ou want to place the icon. Ne xt, press the ENT k ey . No w select the desired icon using the arrow ke ys.
16 T o remov e only icons of a cer tain type, highlight the “DEL ICON TYPE” label. Press the right ar- ro w ke y . The icon selection menu appears. Use the arro w ke ys to highlight the icon style that you wish to er ase. Press the ENT ke y when you’ re ready to erase the icons .
17 REPR OGRAM WINDO W GR OUPS You can customize the window groups to meet your own needs. The GlobalNav 200 gives you 35 different windows that can be rearranged into many combinations. To reprogram a group, first go to the pages menu and select the group that you wish to change.
18 RESET GR OUPS T o restore all windows groups to their f actor y settings, first press the MENU k ey , then highlight the “System Setup” label and press the r ight arrow k ey . Now highlight the “Reset Groups” label on this menu. Press the right ar- ro w ke y .
19 press the EXIT k e y to er ase the pages men u. Satellite Inf ormation Screen (Gr oup O) This screen shows technical inf or mation about the status of the GPS receiv er . The receiv er has twelv e channels . Data f or each channel is sho wn as bar gr aphs on the right side of the displa y .
20 the set local time menu. Cloc k Alarm Y ou can set the alar m b y using the “Clock Alarm” menu. T o set this alarm, press the MENU key while group “J” is showing, then highlight the “Clk Alm Set” label. Press the r ight arrow k e y . The screen sho wn below appears.
21 the desired number sho ws . Contin ue until the time sho wn in the display is correct, then press the ENT k ey . T o star t the timer , press the MENU ke y , then mov e the b lack bo x to the “Dn Tmr Off On” label. Press the right arrow k ey to star t the timer .
22 which means it’ s ready f or change. If you don’t w ant to change this bo x, simply press the up or do wn arrow k ey to mov e to the bo x that you do w ant to change. In this example , w e will change the BRG bo x to altitude (AL T). T o do this, simply press the left or right arrow k e y while the bo x is flashing.
23 (See the screen at the top of the ne xt page.) A message appears on the displa y telling y ou the w aypoint n umber it just used. W ait a f ew seconds and the menu will clear automatically .
24 (Select Number Method) T o sav e the cursor position under a specific w aypoint n umber , first posi- tion the cursor at the desired position. Then f ollow the pre vious instr uc- tions f or sa ving your present position as a w a ypoint using the select num- ber method.
25 k e ys to scroll through the sa v ed w a ypoints. Only w aypoints that ha ve a position will sho w using this method. Edit Name The GlobalNa v 200 also lets y ou assign a name to each w aypoint. The name can hav e up to eight characters . T o name a wa ypoint, first select the w aypoint n umber that you wish to name.

T o do this, first press the WPT k ey , highlight the “Options” menu and press the right arrow k ey , then highlight the “Dist Btwn WPTS” label and press the r ight arrow k e y .
27 Delete a W a ypoint T o erase all of the inf or mation in a wa ypoint, first press the WPT ke y , then select the w aypoint y ou want to erase . Now highlight the “Options” label and press the r ight arrow k e y . Finally , highlight the “Delete WPT” label and press the r ight arrow ke y .
28 the route. T o select the first wa ypoint in the route , press the r ight arro w k e y . A ne w menu appears as sho wn below right. This menu lets y ou go to the wa ypoint selection menu, delete a wa ypoint from the route, or see details about an y wa ypoint in the route .
29 As y ou add wa ypoints to the list, their bearing and distance from each other is sho wn to the r ight of the w aypoint name . On the screen at right, wa y- point 2 is on a bearing of 133° and 4.68 miles from wa ypoint 1. The total route distance is shown at the bottom of this screen.
30 Follo wing a Route Bef ore star ting the route, y ou’ll need to decide if y ou want to star t at the beginning and trav el f or- w ard or star t at the last wa ypoint in the route and tra v el backw ards (re verse) to the first w a ypoint. The def ault is f orward.

32 Navigating to a Wa ypoint using the Plotter The unique “birds-ey e” view used b y the plotter gives y ou an easy wa y to na vigate to a wa ypoint. On the plotter screen shown on the pre vious page , the diamond with a cross in it is your present position.
33 SYSTEM SETUP The GlobalNa v 200 has sev eral menus and com- mands listed under the “System Setup” label on the main menu. These commands aff ect the ba- sic oper ation of the unit. T o use them, press the MENU k e y , then highlight the “System Setup” la- bel.
34 NMEA / DGPS The GlobalNa v 200 transmits data through the data por t in the bac k of the unit using NMEA 0183 f or mat, v ersion 1.5 or 2.0. This data is used by other electronic de vices such as mar ine autopilots f or position and steer- ing inf or mation.

36 NMEA OUTPUT T o tur n the NMEA output on, highlight the “NMEA OUTPUT” menu (shown at the bottom of the pre vious page), then press the r ight arrow k ey .
37 These menus select the beacon receiv er’ s frequency and bit rate (in bits per second). T o change one of these settings, simply highlight the men u item y ou wish to change, then press the right or left arrow k ey until the desired number appears .
38 GPS SETUP The GPS Setup menu has sub-men us that aff ect the GPS receiv er . F rom these menus y ou can set the update r ate, initializ e the GPS receiver , do a self-test on the receiv er , and do a cold-star t. (Note: The “Initialize GPS receiver” is cov ered in the “Finding Y our P osition” section in the front of this manual.
39 P osition Format T o change the position f or mat, highlight the “P o- sition F or mat” label on the “GPS Setup” menu (sho wn on the previous page), then press the right arrow k e y . A screen similar to the one at right ap- pears . The GlobalNa v 200 can sho w the position in de- grees , minutes, and thousandths of a min ute (36° 28.
40 D A TUM Maps and char ts are based on a sur ve y of the area that’ s co vered b y the map or char t . These surve ys are called “Datums”. Maps that are created using diff erent datums will show the same latitude/longitude in slightly diff erent locations.
41 PCF (P osition Correction Factor) Another method used to mak e your displa y match a char t or map is called “PCF” or P osition Correction F actor . This unit gives y ou the capability to mo ve or offset the position sho wn on the displa y to match one on the char t .
42 After y ou’ve entered the latitude/longitude correction, press the ENT k ey to accept it. The GlobalNav 200 erases the PCF entr y screen and retur ns to the na vigation or mapping screens with the correction f actor applied.
43 “ALARMS/CDI” menu. A screen similar to the one sho wn at r ight appears. Press the up or down ar- ro w ke y to mov e the b lack bo x to the desired alar m, then press the right arrow k e y to turn it on.
44 SIMULA T OR A simulator is b uilt into the GlobalNa v 200 that has se veral options . Y ou can use near ly all of the unit’ s f eatures - ev en sav e and recall wa ypoints.
