Operating y our P owerMax T ransformer safely 4 Y our Lionel PowerMax T ransformer is listed by Underwriter’ s Laboratory Inc. and has been carefully designed to ensure peak performance. When using electrical products, basic safety precautions should be maintained.
5 Building your Lionel la yout Y our set comes with eight curved, three straight, and one terminal section of track. Figure 1 provides some examples of layouts that you can build with these track sections. By adding more FasT rack track sections, you can create an endless number of exciting track arrangements for more fun, action, and variety .
Joining the FasT r ack track sections F asT rack track sections join together easily . With interlocking roadbed sections and large rail tabs, the track fits together securely so you always get good electrical contact. T ake a look at Figure 3 to see how to join the track sections.
Wiring your P owerMax T r ansformer 7 Creating y our la yout C onnect your FasT rack terminal section to the PowerMax T ransformer . Use the wires that are already attached to the terminal section. Make sure that all connections are secure. Loose connections can produce extremely high temperatures.
8 Running your tr ain Running your tr ain set With track pow er off, place your tr ain set on the track. Refer to page 9 for information on coupling the cars. 3 3 3 3 2 2 4 4 P ower up your locomotiv e with your tr ansformer . Y our locomotive is designed to operate on 7-15 volts alternating cur- rent.
Coupling W hen coupling your cars, at least one of the mating couplers must be open as shown at the left in Figure 6. Press down on the lock release to open the coupler , then push the cars toward each other until they lock together . Keep in mind that it’ s easier to couple cars on a straight stretch of track.

12 Whistle/Horn Activates the whistle or horn sound effect in your Lionel locomotives. Press WHISTLE/HORN to begin the sound; release the button to end it. Bell Starts or stops the tolling bell in any Railsounds-equipped locomotive . Press BELL to begin the sound, again to stop it.
T he electronic reverse unit inside your Lionel locomotive acts like the transmission in a car . When you apply power to the track, the locomotive moves in the direction specified by the reverse unit—or it sits in neutral, awaiting another power interruption.
P owerMax T r ansformer operation 14 P owering your la yout with the P owerMax T ransformer Y our PowerMax T ransformer provides a total output of 1.8 amps. Also, available voltage depends on how much load is on the output. Generally , track voltage is 0-16 volts (AC ).
15 Maintaining and servicing your set Lubricating your locomotiv e H elp your Lionel locomotive lead a long and productive life on your railroad by maintain- ing it properly . We recommen d that you purchase a Lionel Lubrication and Maintenance Kit (6-62927), available from your Lionel dealer .
Maintaining and servicing your set 16 Replacing the traction tir es Y our locomotive is equipped with one traction tire (Lionel part no. 620-8613-206). During the course of normal operations, the traction tire may become worn out. T o replace the traction tire, use a 3/16” nut driver to remove the drive rod nut.
Maintaining and servicing your set 17 Figure 12. Lamp replacement Replacing the interior lamp T he work caboose is illuminated by one red lamp (Lionel part no. 630-6548-300). During the course of normal operations, you may find that this lamp requires replacement.
18 Maintaining and servicing your set Advanced connections: powering tw o isolated blocks with two transformers A s you expand your layout, you may decide to create two isolated blocks of track. T rains in each block are controlled by separate transformers.
19 Maintaining and servicing your set T r oubleshooting No lights or operation Be sure PowerMax T ransformer is plugged in. Train runs, but WHISTLE /HORN, BELL, and DIRECTION buttons do not work Check track connections. The track must be connected to the “A” and “U” terminals on the T ransformer .
