Bef or e S ta r tin g Before you start using this manua l to set up and customize your cash register, you should know the following.

Chapter 2: Getting Started 4 Alpha 583cx User’s Guide T o get the cash register ready to use 1 Re move the cash register and the pa rts from the box. Store the box and packing material in a safe, dry place. If you need to move the register in the future, you can put it bac k in the box.
Alpha 583cx User’s Guide 5 Installing the Paper Roll Installing the P aper Roll Y our cash register has a thermal pr inter that pri nts receipts for the customer or a journal tape. Y ou can use 2¼ inch (5 7 .5 mm) wide standard thermal register paper .
Chapter 2: Getting Started 6 Alpha 583cx User’s Guide • If you do not need to print receipts: Place the black plastic J ournal T akeup spindle on its grooves above the Battery compartment. The spindle sits above the paper roll. Pr ess the Fe e d key to move the paper through the printe r about 1 0-1 2 inches.
Alpha 583cx User’s Guide 7 Setting the Date And Time Setting the Date And Time The date c h anges every day and prints in the month-day- year format. Y ou can prevent the date from printing on the transaction receipts. The date format can also be c hanged to print day-month-year .
Chapter 2: Getting Started 8 Alpha 583cx User’s Guide Pr ogramming the Sales T ax N ow you need to program the sales tax for your area. If you do not know your sales tax rate, contact your local government office. Tip Y ou must press at least 4 digits in step 4.
Alpha 583cx User’s Guide 9 Programming Department Keys Pr ogramming Depar tment K ey s Y ou are done with the basi c programming of your ca sh register . After you program at least 2 department keys, yo u are ready to use th e cash register, if you do not wa nt to use any of th e oth er features.
Alpha 583cx User’s Guide G etting T o Kno w the C ash Register This c hapter shows you the basics of using your cash register after you set it up. If you have not yet set up yo ur cash register, see the Quick Start sheet that came in the box with your cash register or Getting Started on page 3.

The cash drawer has slots fo r putting paper bills and a tray for coins. Y ou can store paper items suc h as chec ks an d charge slips under the removable coin tray .

Alpha 583cx User’s Guide 21 Setting Alphanumeric Descriptions If you use double wide c h aracters, the maximum number of c haracters you can use is cut in half. T o make a character print extra wide, you must use the double width code 01 before eac h character as you type in the description.

F or example, you can list your hours of opera tion or a special promotion at the bottom of every receipt.

If you want to use the optional barcode reader, you can scan U P C codes to ring up items.

F or information about ringin g up comp licated sales, see Examples on page 90. If you want to learn about using the cash register without affecting the daily total, you can use the T raining mode.

Chapter 8: Running Reports 72 Alpha 583cx User’s Guide Running the Depar tment C onfirmation Report Y ou can print a report that shows the programmed information for a range of departments. This is helpful if you want to see the programmed names of some of the de partments, but do not n eed to see all other programming information.

Running the Depar tment Sales Repor t The D epartment Sales Report allows you to c heck the current sales information for specified departments.
Chapter 8: Running Reports 74 Alpha 583cx User’s Guide When you are done printing these reports, the information only exists on the cash register tape. Y ou ca n run almost all reports in the Z position. T o prevent someone from accidently printing these re ports, a manager password can be set.
