Status icons The icons in the status bar at the t op of the screen give information about iP od touch: Status icon What it means Wi-Fi* Sho ws that iP od touch is connected to the Internet over a Wi-F i network. The more bars, the stronger the connection.

Connecting iP od touch to y our computer If you don ’t hav e Wi-Fi access , you might need to c onnect iPod touch to y our computer to complete setup . Y ou can also connect iP od touch to your comput er to sync music, videos, and other information with iT unes.
VPN access VPN (vir tual private netw ork) provides secure access o ver the Internet to priv ate networks, such as the network at your compan y or school.
iCloud iCloud is a service that stores your con tent, including music, photos, contacts, calendars, and suppor ted documents. Conten t stored in iCloud is wirelessly pushed to y our other iOS devices and computers set up with the same iCloud accoun t.
View and download previous iT unes St ore purchases Go to iT unes and tap Purchased . View and download previous App Store pur chases Go to App Store , tap Updates, then tap Purchased. View and download previous iBookstore purchases Go to iBooks, tap Store , then tap Purchased .
Basics 3 Using apps The high-resolution Multi-T ouch screen and simple nger gestures make it easy to use iP od touch apps. Opening and switching apps Open an app: T ap it. Press the Home button to see apps on the Home screen. Return to the Home screen: Press the Home butt on .
F orce an app to close: T ouch and hold the app icon until it begins to jiggle, then tap . Removing an app from the recen ts list forces it t o quit. Scrolling Drag up or down to scroll. On some screens such as webpages, you can also scroll side to side.
Zooming in or out When viewing photos, webpages, email, or maps , you can zoom in and out. Pinch your ngers together or apart. F or photos and webpages, you can double-tap (tap twice quick ly) to zoom in, then double-tap again to zoom out. For maps , double-tap to zoom in and tap once with two ngers to zoom out.
Cust omizing the Home screen Y ou can customize the lay out of icons on the Home screen—including the Dock icons along the bottom of the screen. I f you want , arrange them across multiple Home screens. Y ou can also organize apps by gr ouping them in folders.
The new folder con tains the two icons, and shows the folder ’ s name. Y ou can tap the name eld and enter a di erent name. Put an item in a folder While arranging icons, drag the icon onto the folder . Remove an item fr om a folder While arranging icons, tap to open the folder , then drag the icon out of the folder .
T yping The onscreen keyboard appears anytime y ou need to type. Entering T ext The onscreen keyboard appears when you tap an area wher e you need to enter t ext. The keyboard corrects misspellings, predic ts what you ’ re typing, and lear ns as you use it.
Auto-c orrection and spell checking F or many languages , iP od touch corrects misspellings or makes suggestions as you type. When iP od touch suggests a word , you can acc ept the suggestion without interrupting your typing. F or a list of suppor ted languages, see www .
Editing text It ’ s easy to make changes to text you enter . An onscreen magnifying glass helps you position the inser tion point. Grab points on selected text let you select more or less text. Y ou can also cut, copy , and paste text and photos, within an app or across apps.
Using an Ap ple Wireless Ke yboard Y ou can use an Apple Wireless Keyboard (a vailable separately; iPod touch 3r d generation or later) for typing on iP od touch. The Apple Wireless Keyboard connects via Bluetooth, so you must pair the keyboard with iP od touch.
Searching Y ou can search many apps on iP od touch, including M ail, Calendar , Music, Videos, Note s, Messages , and Contacts. Y ou can search an individual app, or search all apps at once using Search. Search iP od touch: From y our rst Home screen, ick right or press the Home button , then tap the search eld .
V oice Contr ol V oice Con trol (iP od touch 3rd generation or later) lets y ou control music playback using v oice commands. T o use V oice Control with iP od touch 3rd genera tion, you need Apple Earphones with Remote and Mic, or a compatible acce ssor y with a microphone.
Notications Notication Cent er displays all y our aler ts in one place, including aler ts about: New email  New text messages  Reminders  Calendar events  F riend requests (Game Center)  W eather  Stocks  Alerts appear on the lock screen, or briey at the t op of the screen when you ’ re using iP od touch.
T witter Sign in to your Twitt er account (or create a new accoun t) in Settings to enable T weets with attachments from the f ollowing apps: Camera—with a photo from y our Camera Roll album  Safa.
Get quick access to the AirPla y controls When the screen is on, double-click the Home button and scroll to the left end of the multitasking bar. Switch pla yback back to iP od touch T ap and choose iPod touch.
Battery iP od touch has an internal rechargeable ba tter y . The batter y isn ’t user accessible and should be replaced only by A pple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider . Charging the ba ttery W ARNING: F or impor tant safety information about charging iP od touch, see the Important Product Information Guide at www .
Important: If iP od touch is very low on power , it may displa y one of the following images , indicating that iP od touch needs to charge f or up to ten minutes bef ore you can use it. If iP od touch is extremely low on power , the displa y may be blank for up to tw o minutes before one of the low-battery images appears.
 Remote P asscode Lock: Lets you r emotely lock your iP od touch and creat e a 4-digit passcode, if you hav en ’t set one previously .  Remote Wipe: Lets you prot ect your privacy by erasing all media and data on iP od touch, restoring it to factory settings.
Music 4 Adding music and audio T o get music and other audio content on to iP od touch: Purchase and do wnload content from the iT unes Store on iP od touch. S ee Chapter  24 , “ iT unes Store ,” on page 93 . Y ou can also go to the iT unes Store from Music by tapping the Stor e button when browsing .
View the Now Playing scr een: T ap Now Playing . Next/Fast-forward Play/Pause T rack list Back V olume Previous/ Rewind AirPlay Customize the br owse buttons T ap M ore, tap Edit, then dr ag an icon over the button you w ant to replace.
Additional audio c ontrols T o display additional contr ols, tap the album artwork on the Now Playing screen. Y ou can see elapsed time, remaining time, and the song number . The song ’ s lyrics also appear , if you ’ve added them to the song in iT unes .
Using V oice C ontrol with Music Y ou can use V oice Control (iP od touch 3rd generation or later) to con trol music playback on iP od touch. See “ V oice Contr ol” on page 28 . Contr ol music playback Say “play” or “play music.” T o pause , say “pause ” or “pause music.
Viewing tracks on an album See all the tracks on the album that con tains the current song: On the Now Playing screen, tap . T ap a track to play it. T ap the thumbnail to return to the Now P laying screen. Rating bar Return to the Now Playing screen.
Genius A Genius playlist is a collection of songs from your library that go great together . Y ou can create Genius playlists in iT unes and sync them to iP o d touch.
Playlists Y ou can create and edit your own pla ylists on iP od touch, or edit playlists synced from iT unes on your computer . Create a pla ylist: V iew Playlists, then tap “ Add Pla ylist ” near the top of the list. Ent er a title, tap to select songs and videos you want to include , then tap Done.
Videos 5 About V ideos With iP od touch, you can view movies , music videos, and video podcasts from iT unes, and, if they ’ re av ailable in your area, T V shows. Playing videos Play a video: T ap the video. T ap the video to show or hide controls.
Rewind or fast-forward T ouch and hold or . Stop watching a video T ap D one. Select a di erent audio language (if available) T ap , then choose a language fr om the Audio list. Show or hide subtitles (if a vailable) T ap , then choose a language, or O , from the Subtitles list.
W at ching videos on a T V Y ou can stream videos wirelessly to y our T V using AirPlay and Apple T V , or c onnect i P od touch to your T V using any of the following: Apple Digital A V Adapter and a.
Setting a sleep timer Y ou can set iPod t ouch to stop playing music or videos after a period of time. Set a sleep timer: F rom the Home screen choose Clock > Timer , then ick to set the number of hours and minutes. T ap When Timer Ends and choose Sleep i P od , tap Set, then tap Start to star t the timer .
Messages 6 Sending and receiving message s Using the Messages app and the built-in iMessage ser vice, you can send free text messages over Wi-Fi t o other iOS 5 users. Messages can include photos , videos, and other info. Y ou can see when the other person is typing, and let others be notied when you ’ve read their me ssages.
Use emoji characters Go to Settings > General > Keyboard > International Keyboards > Add N ew Keyboard, then tap Emoji to make that keyboard available. T o enter emoji characters when typing a message, tap to bring up the Emoji keyboard. See “Switching keyboards” on page 131 .
Editing con versa tions If you want to keep just part of a conversation, you can delete the parts you don’ t want. Y ou can also delete entire c onversations from the Message s list. Edit a con versation: T ap Edit, select the par ts to delete, then tap Delete.
F ace Time 7 About F ace Time F ace Time lets you make video calls over Wi-Fi. Use the front camera to talk face-t o-face, or the main camera to share what y ou see around you. T o use F ace T ime, you need iPod t ouch 4th generation and a Wi-Fi c onnection to the Internet.
Mak ing a F ace Time call T o make a F ace Time call, choose someone from your c ontacts, favorit es, or list of recen t calls. When you open F ace Time, you may be prompted to sign in using y our Apple ID , or to create a new account. T ap to make a FaceT ime call.
Camer a 8 About Camera With iP od touch 4th generation, the built-in camera lets you take both still photos and videos . There ’ s a camera on the back, and a front camera f or F ace Time and self-por traits. T ap a person or object to set the exposure.
T ake a photo: M ake sure the Camera/Video switch is set to , then aim iP od touch and tap . Y ou can also take a photo by pressing the volume up button. Record a video: Slide the Camera/Video switch to , then tap to start or stop recording , or press the volume up butt on.
Editing photos Y ou can rotate , enhance, remove red-eye , and crop photos . Enhancing improve s a photo ’ s overall darkness or lightness, color satura tion, and other qualities. Rotate Auto enhance Removered-eye Crop Edit a photo: While viewing a photo in full screen, tap Edit, then choose a tool.
Photo Str eam With Photo Stream—a f eature of iCloud—photos you take on iP od touch are a utomatically uploaded to iCloud and pushed to all your other devic es that have P hoto Stream enabled . Photos uploaded to iCloud from your other de vices and computers are also pushed to y our Photo Stream album on iP od touch.
Photos 9 Viewing photos and videos Photos lets you view phot os and videos on iPod t ouch, in your: Camera Roll album—photos and videos you take with the built-in camera, or save from an  email, t.
Show or hide the contr ols T ap the full-screen photo or video. See the next or previous photo or video Flick left or right. Zoom in or out Double-tap or pinch. P an a photo Drag the photo . Play a video T ap in the c enter of the screen. View a video in full screen, or t to screen Double-tap the video.
Sharing photos and videos Send a photo or video in an email, text message, or T weet: Choose a photo or video, then tap . If you don ’t see , tap the screen to sho w the controls. Note: Video features are a vailable only on iP od touch 4th generation.
Game Cen ter 10 About Game Cent er Discover new game s and share your game experiences with friends around the world in Game Cent er (iPod t ouch 3rd generation or later).
Signing in to Game Cen ter Sign in: Open Game Center . If you see y our nickname and photo at the top of the screen, you ’ re already signed in. If not, enter your Apple ID and password , then tap Sign In. Or , tap Crea te New Account t o create a new Apple ID .
Search for someone in your list of friends T ap the status bar to scroll to the top of the screen, then tap the search eld and start t yping. Prev ent game invita tions from others T urn o Game Invite s in your Game Center accoun t settings. See “ G ame Center settings ” below.
Mail 11 Mail works with iCloud , Microsoft Exchange, and many of the most popular email sy stems— including Y aho o!, Google, Hotmail, and A OL—as well as other industry-standard POP3 and IMAP email systems. Y ou can send and receive photos , videos, and graphics , and view PDFs and other attachments.
Resize a column of te xt to t the screen Double-tap the text. See all the recipients of a message T ap Details. T ap a name or email address to see the recipient’ s contact information. Then tap a phone number or email address t o contact the person.
Using links and detected data iP od touch detects web links, phone numbers, email addresses , dates , and other types of information that you can use t o open a webpage, create a preaddressed email me ssage, creat e or add information to a con tact, or per form some other useful action.
Organizing mail Y ou can orga nize m essage s in a ny ma ilbox , fo lder , or s earch resul ts wind ow . Y ou can delete or mark messages as read . Y ou can also mov e messages from one mailbox or f older to another in the same account or between di erent accounts .
Some settings depend on the type of account. Y our ser vice provider or syst em administrator can provide the inf ormation you need to enter . Change an account’ s settings: Go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars, choose an account , then make the changes you want.
Reminders 12 About Reminders Reminders lets you organize y our life—complete with reminders so y ou don ’t miss a due date . Reminders works with your calendar accounts , so changes you make are updat ed automatically on all your iOS devices and c omputers.
Setting a reminder Y ou can set a reminder for a date and time and ha ve Reminders alert you when the item is due. Add a reminder: In Reminders, tap , then enter a description and tap Done. After you add a reminder , you can ne-tune its settings: Set a day or time for a reminder T ap the reminder , then tap Remind Me.
Managing reminders in date view Use date view to view and manage r eminders that have a due date . View reminders for a date: At the top of the screen, tap Date to view t oday ’ s reminders and uncompleted items from pr evious days. View a recent dat e Drag the time slider , located under the list, to a new day .
Safari 13 Safari lets you sur f the web and view webpages . Create bookmarks on iPod t ouch and sync them with your computer . Add web clips t o the Home screen for quick access t o your favorite sit es. P rint webpages , PDFs, and other documents. Use Reading List to collect sites to read la ter .
Go to another page T ap , ick left or right, then tap the page. Stop a webpage from loading T ap . Reload a webpage T ap in the address eld. Close a page T ap , then tap by the page. Protect priva te information and block some websites from tr acking your behavior Go to Settings > Safari and turn on Private Br owsing.
Searching The search eld in the upper-right corner lets you sear ch the web , and the current page or PDF . Search the web , and the curren t page or searchable PDF: Enter text in the search eld . Â T o search the web: T ap one of the suggestions that appear , or tap Search.
Newsstand 14 About Newsstand Newsstand organizes y our magazine and newspaper app subscriptions with a shelf that lets you access your publications quickly and easily . Newsstand apps appear on the shelf , and as new issues become av ailable, a badge lets you k now they’re r eady for reading .
Calendar 15 About Calendar Calendar makes it easy to stay on schedule . Y ou can view individual calendars, or several calendars at once. Y ou can view your events by da y , by mon th, or in a list. Y ou can search the titles , invitee s, locations, and notes of events.
View the Bir thdays calendar T ap Calendars, then tap Bir thdays to include birthdays from your C ontacts with your events . See the details of an event T ap the event. Y ou can tap information about the event to get more details. If an address for the location is s pecied, for example , tap it to open Maps.
Subscribing to calendars Y ou can subscribe to calendars that use the iCalendar (.ics) format. Many calendar-based ser vices suppor t calendar subscriptions, including iCloud, Y ahoo!, Google, and the iCal application in OS X. Subscribed calendars are read-only .
Y ouT ube 16 About Y ouT ube Y ouT ube lets you watch short videos submitted by people from around the w orld. S ome Y ouTube feature s require a Y ouT ub e account. T o set up an account, go to www .youtube.com. Note: Y ouT ube may not be av ailable in all languages and locations.
Playing videos W atch a video: T ap any video as you browse . Playback starts when enough of the video is downloaded to iP od touch. T he shaded por tion of the scrubber bar shows download progress . T ap the video to show or hide the controls. W atch on a TV with Apple TV .
Sharing videos, comments , and ratings Show the con trols for sharing , commenting , and rating: T ap next to the video. Email a link to a video T ap next to a video and tap Share Video.
Stocks 17 Viewing stock quotes Stocks lets you see the lat est available quot es for your selected stocks , funds, and indexes. T o use Stocks, iPod touch must join a Wi-Fi network that’ s connected to the Internet. See “Connecting to the Internet” on page 14 .
Delete a stock T ap and tap nex t to a stock, then tap Delete. Change the order of the list T ap . Then drag nex t to a stock or index to a new place in the list. Switch the view to per centage change, price change , or market capitalization T ap any of the values along the right side of the screen.
Maps 18 F inding locations W ARNING: F or impor tant information about driving and naviga ting safely , see the Important Product Information Guide at www .apple.com/suppor t/manuals/ipodtouch. Display the location of a business or person in your contacts list.
See the name or description of a location T ap the pin. See a list of the businesses found in a search T ap , then tap List. T ap a business to see its location. Find y our current location T ap . Y our current location is shown by a blue marker . If your location can ’t be determined precisely , a blue circle appears around the marker .
If you ’ re taking public transit, tap to set y our depar ture or arrival time, and to choose a schedule for the trip . T ap the icon at a stop to see the departure time for that bus or train, and to get a link to the transit provider’ s website or contact info .
Map views See a satellite view or h ybrid view : T ap , then select the view you want. See the Google Street View of a location: T ap . Flick left or right to pan through the 360° panoramic view (the inset shows your curren t view). T ap an arrow to move down the str eet.
W eather 19 Getting weather information T ap W eather on the Home screen to get the current temperature and six-da y forecast f or one or more cities around the w orld. T o use W eather , iPod t ouch must join a Wi-Fi network that’ s connected to the Internet.
Note s 20 About Notes T ype notes on iP od touch, and iCloud makes them available on your other iOS device s and Mac computers. Y ou can also read and create notes in other acc ounts, such as Gmail or Y ahoo!. T ap the note to edit it. Delete the note.
Reading and editing notes Notes are list ed with the most recent at the top . If you use more than one iOS devic e or computer with your iCloud accoun t, notes from all device s are listed. If you share notes with an application on your computer or with other online accoun ts such as Y ahoo! or Gmail, those notes are organized by acc ount.
Clock 21 About Clock Y ou can use Clock to check the time anywhere in the world , set an alarm, time an event , or set a timer . Add a clock. View clocks, set an alarm, time an event, or set a timer .
Setting alarms Y ou can set multiple alarms. Set each alarm to repeat on days y ou specify , or t o sound only once. Set an alarm: T ap Alarm and tap . Change settings for an alarm T ap Edit, then tap . Delete an alarm T ap Edit, then tap . If at least one alarm is set and turned on, appears in the iP od touch status bar at the top of the screen.
Calcula tor 22 Using the calculator T ap numbers and func tions in Calculator just as y ou would with a standard calculator . When you tap the add, subtract, multiply , or divide button, a whit e ring appears around the button to let you know the operation to be carried out.
V oice Memos 23 About V oice Memos V oice Memos lets you use iP od touch as a portable recording device using the built-in microphone , iPod t ouch or Bluetooth headset mic, or suppor ted ex ternal microphone. Recordings using the built-in microphone are mono , but you can record stereo using an external stereo microphone.
Listening to a r ecording Play a rec ording: T ap , tap a memo , then tap . T ap t o pause. T rim or relabel the recording. Attach the recording to an email or text message. Drag to skip to any point. Listen to the recording. Skip to any point in a rec ording Drag the playhead along the scrubber bar .
iT unes Store 24 About the iT unes Stor e Use the iT unes St ore to add conten t to iP od touch. Y ou can browse and pur chase music, T V shows, and ringtones. Y ou can also buy and rent movies , or download and play podcasts or iT unes U collections.
Pur chasing music, audiobooks, and tones When you nd a song , album, alert tone, or audiobook you like in the iT unes Store, you can purchase and download it. Y ou can preview an item before you pur chase it to make sure it ’ s what you want. Previe w an item: T ap the item and follo w the onscreen instructions.
F ollowing artists and friends Use Ping to connect with the world’ s most passionate music fans. F ollow favorite artists to learn about new releases and upcoming concerts and tours, get an insider ’ s p erspective through their photos and videos, and learn about their musical inuences.
Checking download status Y ou can check the Downloads screen to see the status of in-progre ss and scheduled downloads, including purchases you pr e-order . See the status of items being downloaded: T ap D ownloads (tap More rst, if D ownloads isn ’t visible).
App S tore 25 About the App Stor e Y ou can search for , browse , review , purchase, and download apps from the App S tore directly to iP od touch. Note: The App Store ma y not be available in all ar eas, and App St ore content ma y vary . F eatures are subject to change.
F inding and downloading apps Browse the f eatured selections to see new , notable , or recommended apps, or browse T op 25 to see the most popular apps. If you ’ re looking for a specic app , use Search. Browse the A pp Store: T ap Featur ed, Categories, or T op 25.
Store settings Use Store settings t o sign in to an Apple ID , create a new A pple ID , or edit an existing one. I f you have mor e than one Apple ID , you can use Stor e settings to sign out from one and in to another .
Settings 26 Settings lets you congure iP od touch, set app options, add accounts , and enter other prefer ences. Airplane mode Airplane mode disables the wireless f eatures in order to r educe potential int er ference with aircraft operation and other electrical equipment.
Join a closed Wi-Fi network T o join a Wi-F i network that isn’ t shown in the list of scanned networks, go to Settings > Wi-Fi > Other , then enter the network name . Y ou must already k now the network name, password, and security type to connect to a closed network.
Some apps have additional options. For example , Messages lets you s pecify how many times the aler t sound is repeated , and whether message previews ar e included in the notication. Location Services Location Services lets apps such as Reminders, Maps, Camera, and third-part y location-based apps gather and use data showing your loca tion.
Set whether iPod t ouch adjusts screen brightness aut omatically Go to Settings > Brightness and turn Auto-Brightne ss on or o . If Auto-Brightne ss is on, iP o d touch adjusts the screen brightness f or current light conditions using the built-in ambient light sensor .
T urn Bluetooth on or o : Go to Settings > General > Bluetooth. Connect to a Bluetooth device T ap the device in the Devices list, then follow the onscreen instructions to connect to it. See the documentation that came with the device f or instructions about Bluetooth pairing.
T urn passcode lock o or change your passcode Go to Settings > General > Passc ode Lock. Set how long before your passcode is required Go to Settings > General > Passc ode Lock and enter your passcode .
Multiplayer Games When Multiplayer Games is turned o , y ou can’ t request a match, send or receiv e invitations to play games , or add friends in Game Cen ter . Adding F riends When Adding Friends is o , y ou can’ t make or receive friend requests in Game Cent er .
Acce ssibility T o turn on accessibility features, go to Settings > G eneral > Acce ssibility and choose the features you want. See Chapter 30 , “ Accessibility ,” on page 11 8 . Prole s This setting appears if you install one or more pr oles on iP od touch.
