Registering iP od touch Before you can use an y of the iP od touch feature s, you must use iT unes to set up iP od touch. Y ou can also register iP od touch and create an iT unes Stor e account (not available in some c ountries) if you don ’t alread y have one.
Syncing About Syncing With iP od touch, it’ s easy to ha ve instant access t o your music, video, downloaded applications, and other iT unes librar y conten t. iT unes can sync all this inf ormation to iP od touch, and your con tacts, calendars, and your browser bookmar ks as well.
Email account settings are sync ed only from your computer’ s email application to iP od touch. This allow s you to customize y our email accounts on iP od touch without a ec ting email account settings on your c omputer . Note: Y ou can also set up email accounts directly on iP od touch.
Summary Pane Select “Open iT unes when this iPod is connected” to have iT unes open and sync iP od touch automatically whenev er you connect it to your computer . Deselect this option if you want t o sync only by clicking the Sync button in iT unes.
Info P ane The Info pane lets y ou congure the sync settings for your c ontacts, calendars, email accounts , and web browser . Contacts • Y ou can sync contacts with applications such as Mac OS X.
Pre venting A utomatic S yncing Y ou can prevent iP od touch from syncing a utomatically when you connect iP od touch to a computer other than the one y ou usually sync with. T urn o automatic syncing for iP od touch: Connect iP od touch to your computer .
Set up an account on iP od touch: 1 F rom the iP od touch Home screen, tap Settings. 2 T ap “Mail, Con tacts, Calendars,” then tap Add A ccount. 3 T ap an account type: Microsoft Exchange • MobileMe • Google email • Y ahoo! Mail • AOL • Other • 4 Enter your acc ount information and tap Sav e.
Similarly , when y ou disable contacts or calendars in an MobileMe or Exchange account, or if you delete an account, iPod touch asks if y ou want to keep information or delete it. Y ou can add contacts using an LDAP account if your compan y or organization suppor ts it.

Calculator Add , subtract, multiply , and divide. Rotate iP od touch sideways to use e xpanded scientic functions. Settings Adjust all iP od touch settings in one conv enient place. S et your own v olume limit for listening comfort. Set your wallpaper , screen brightness , and settings for network, mail, web , music, video , photos, and more.
Create addition al Home screens: While arranging icons, drag an icon to the right edge of the screen until a new screen appears . Y ou can ick to return to the original screen and drag more icons t o the new screen. Y ou can create up to 1 1 screens.
Lock iP od touch Pre ss the Sleep/Wake button. Unlock iP od touch Pre ss the Home button or the Sleep/W ake button, then drag the slider . T urn iP od touch completely o Pre ss and hold the Sleep/Wake button f or a few seconds until the red slider appears , then drag the slider .
T ouchscreen The contr ols on the iPod t ouch touchscreen change dynamically depending on the task you ’ re per forming . Opening Applications Open an application: T ap an icon. Close an application and return to the Home scr een: P ress the Home button below the display .
Flick to scr oll quickly . Y ou can wait for the scrolling to c ome to a stop , or touch anywhere on the screen to stop it immediately . T ouching the screen to stop scrolling won ’t choose or activate anything . T o quick ly scroll to the top of a list , webpage, or email, just tap the status bar .
Zooming In or Out When viewing photos, webpages, email, or maps , you can zoom in and out. Pinch your ngers together or apart. F or photos and webpages, you can double-tap (tap twice quickly) to zoom in, then double-tap again to zoom out. For maps, double-tap to zoom in and tap once with two ngers to zoom out.
Stocks • Photos • Calculator • Movies viewed in V ideo and Y ouT ube appear only in landscape orientation. Street views in Maps also appear in landscape. Onscreen Keyboard Use the onscreen keyboard to ent er text, such as contact information and web addresses .
T ype uppercase T ap the Shif t key before tapping a letter . Or touch and hold the Shift key , then slide to a letter . Quickly type a period and space Double-tap the space bar . ( Y ou can turn this feature on or o in Settings > General > Keyboard.
Editing An onscreen magnifying glass helps you position the insertion point for typing and editing text. Y ou can select text to cut, copy , and paste. P osition the insertion point: T ouch and hold to bring up the magnifying glass, then drag to position the insertion point.
Intern ational Keyboar ds iP od touch provides keyboards that allo w you to enter t ext in many di erent languages, including languages that read from right to left. F or a complete list of suppor ted keyboards, go to www .apple.com/ipodtouch/s pecs.
Enter Kor ean Use the 2-Set Korean keyboard to type Hangul letters. T o t ype double consonants or compound vowels , touch and hold the letter , then slide to choose the double letter . Enter Simplied or T raditional Chinese Pinyin Use the QWERT Y keyboard to enter Pin yin for Chinese characters.
Searching Y ou can search many applications on iP od touch, including M ail, Calendar , Music, Video, Notes, and Con tacts. Y ou can search an individual application, or search all the applications at once using Spotlight. Go to Spotlight: From the main page of the Home screen, ick left to right.
V oice Contr ol V oice Con trol (available only on F all 2009 models with 3 2 GB or more) lets you con trol iP od music playback using voice commands . Note: Requires included headset or compatible accessory with microphone. V oice Con trol isn ’t av ailable in all languages.
See“Using V oice Contr ol with iP od” on page 46 . Stereo Headset The headset included with F all 2009 models with 3 2 GB or more (shown here) fea tures a microphone, volume buttons, and an integrated button that allo ws you to contr ol audio and video playback.
After you pair headphones with iP o d touch, the produc t name and a Bluetooth audio icon appear on the screen when you ar e viewing audio or video playback contr ols.
F or information about conguring Wi-Fi settings , see “ Wi-Fi” on page 11 5 . VPN Acce ss VPN (vir tual privat e network) provides secure acce ss over the Internet to priv ate networks, such as the network at your company or school. Use Network settings to congure and turn on VPN.
If you charge the battery while syncing or using iP od touch, it may take longer to charge. Y ou can also charge iP od touch using the Apple USB P ower A dapter , available separately .
The F ind My iPhone feature helps you locate iP od touch if it ’ s been lost or misplaced , and display a me ssage on your iP od touch to help someone return it to you . It includes Remote Wipe , which lets you erase all your inf ormation on iPod t ouch in case you don ’t rec over it.
Restar ting and Resetting iP od touch If something isn ’t working right, tr y restarting, force quitting an application, or resetting iP od touch. Restart iPod touch: P ress and hold the Sleep/W ake button until the red slider appears. Slide your nger across the slider to turn o iP od touch.
Music and Video 3 iP od touch syncs with iT unes on your c omputer to get songs, videos, and other conten t you’ ve collected in your iT unes librar y . F or information about adding music and other media to your iT unes librar y , open iT unes and choose Help > iT unes Help.
If there are more songs in your iT unes librar y than can t on your iP od touch, iTune s o ers to create a special playlist t o sync with iPod t ouch. iT unes lls the playlist with random selections from your library . Y ou can add or delete songs from the pla ylist and sync again.
T ransferring Purchased C ont ent to Another C omputer Y ou can transfer cont ent on iP od touch that was purchased using iT unes on one computer to an iT unes librar y on another authorized comput er . The computer must be authorized to pla y content fr om your iT unes Stor e account.
Y ou can turn the “Shake to Shue ” feature on or o in Settings > Music (it ’ s on by default). S ee “Music ” on page 12 3 . Con trolling Song Playback When you play a song , the Now Pla ying screen appears.
Skip to the next song or chapter in an audiobook or podcast T ap , or press the cen ter button on the iP od touch headset (included with F all 2009 models with 3 2 GB or more) or the equivalent button on your Bluetooth headset twice quickly .

Viewing All T racks on an Album See all the tracks on the album that contains the curr ent song: From the No w Playing screen tap . T ap a track to play it. Genius Mixes are created in iT unes. iT unes crea tes di erent mixes depending on the variety of music you have in y our iT unes library . F or example, you may have Genius Mixes that highlight R&B songs , or Alternative Rock songs. T o use Genius on i P od touch, rst tur n on Genius in iT unes, then sync iPod touch with iT unes.
Refresh a Genius playlist: In the playlist, tap Refresh. Refreshing a playlist crea tes a playlist of di erent songs that go great with the song you picked. Y ou can refresh any Genius playlist , whether it was created in iT unes and synced to iP od touch, or created directly on iPod touch.
Playing Videos Play a video: T ap Videos and tap the video . Display pla yback controls: T ap the screen to show the con trols. T ap again to hide them. Con trolling Video Playback Videos play in widescreen to take full advan tage of the display . The scrubber bar lets you skip to any point along the timeline .

W atching Ren ted Movies Y ou can rent movies in standar d (480p) denition from the iT unes Store and w atch them on iP od touch. Y ou can download ren ted movies directly to iP od touch, or transfer them from iT unes on your computer to iP od touch.
Setting a Sleep T imer Y ou can set iPod t ouch to stop playing music or videos after a period of time. Set a sleep timer: F rom the Home screen choose Clock > Timer , then ick to set the number of hours and minutes. T ap When Timer Ends and choose Sleep i P od , tap Set, then tap Start to star t the timer .
Safari 4 Viewing W ebpages Safari lets you sur f the web and view webpage s on iPod t ouch in the same way as if you were on y our computer . Y ou can create bookmarks on iPod touch and sync bookmarks with your computer . Add web clips for quick access t o your favorite sit es directly from the Home screen.
As you type, web addresses that start with those letters appear . These are bookmark ed pages or recent page s you ’ve opened. T ap an address to go to that page. Keep t yping if you want t o enter a web addre ss that ’ s not in the list. Erase the text in the address eld: T ap the address eld , then tap .
Return to a recently view ed page T ap and tap History . T o clear the histor y list, tap Clear . Send a webpage address via email T ap and tap “Mail Link to this P age.” Save an image or photo t o your Photo Library T ouch and hold the image, then tap S ave Image .
Bring up the keyboard T ap inside a tex t eld. Move to another t ext eld T ap another text eld, or tap the Next or Previous button. Submit a form Once you nish lling out a form, tap G o or Search. Most pages also have a link y ou can tap to submit the form.
Sync bookmarks with your computer: 1 Connect iP od touch to your comput er . 2 In iT unes , select iPod touch in the sidebar . 3 Click the Info tab , select “Sync … bookmar ks” under W eb Browser , then click Apply . See “Syncing” on page 9 .
App S tore 5 About the App Stor e Y ou can search for , browse , review , purchase, and download applications from the A pp Store directly to iP od touch. Applications you download and install from the App S tore on iP od touch are backed up to your iT unes librar y the next time you sync iP od touch with your computer .
Browse ap plications: T ap F eatured , Categories , or T op 25 . Choose a category , or choose a sor ting method at the top of the screen t o browse by lists such as New , What’ s Hot, Genius, T op P aid, or T op F ree. Browse using Genius: T ap G enius to see a list of recommended apps based on wha t ’ s already in your app collection.
Info Scr een T ap any application in a list to see more inf ormation, such as the application ’ s price, screenshots, ratings, and other information. If you’ ve already installed the application, “Installed” appears instead of the price on the Info screen.
Downloading Applications When you nd an application y ou want in the App Stor e, you can pur chase and download it to iP od touch. I f the application is free , you can download it without charge after providing y our iT unes account inf ormation. Once you download an application, it ’ s immediately installed on iP od touch.
Deleting Applications Y ou can delete applications you ’ve installed from the A pp Store. If you delete an application, data associated with the application will no longer be a vailable to iP od touch, unless you reinstall the applica tion and restore its data fr om a backup.
Updating Applications Whenever you acc ess the App Store , it checks for updat es to applications you ’ve installed. The App Store also a utomatically checks for updat es every week. The App Store icon sho ws the total number of application updates a vailable.
Mail 6 Mail works with MobileMe, Microsoft Exchange , and many of the most popular email systems—including Y ahoo! Mail, Google email, and AOL—as well as other industry- standard POP3 and IMAP email systems. Y ou can send and receive embedded photos and graphics, and view PDFs and other attachments.
3 T ap Cc/Bcc/From if y ou want to copy or blind cop y the message to others, or change the account you send the me ssage from. If you hav e more than one email account, you can tap the F rom eld to change the account y ou’ re sending from. 4 Enter a subject, then your me ssage.
Check for new message s: Choose a mailbo x or tap at any time . On each account screen, you can see the number of unread messages in each mailbox. Number of unread messages T ap to see all your email accounts T ap a mailbox to see its messages. Unread messages hav e a blue dot nex t to them.
Follo w a link T ap the link. T ex t links are typically underlined and blue. Many images are also links. A link can take you to a webpage , open a map, or open a new preaddressed email message . W eb and map links open Safari or Maps on iP od touch. T o return to your email, press the Home button and tap Mail.

Searching Email Y ou can search the T o, From, and Subjec t elds of email messages. Mail searches the downloaded messages in the curren tly open mailbox. F or MobileMe, Ex change, and some IMAP mail accounts , you can also search messages on the server .
Delete multiple messages: When viewing a list of messages , tap Edit, select the messages you w ant to delete , then tap Delete. Move a message t o another mailbox or folder: When viewing a message, tap , then choose a mailbox or folder .
Calendar 7 About Calendar Calendar lets you view individual calendars f or your di erent accounts or a combined calendar for all accounts . Y ou can view your even ts in a continuous list, by day , or by month, and search ev ents by title, invitee , or location.
Viewing Y our Calendar Y ou can view individual calendars for your di erent accounts or a combined calendar for all accoun ts. View a di erent calendar: T ap Calendars, then selec t a calendar . T ap All Calendars to view combined events fr om all calendars.
Searching Calendars Y ou can search the titles, invitees , and locations of the events in your calendars . Calendar searches the calendar y ou’ re currently viewing, or all calendars if you’ re viewing them all. Search even ts: In list view , enter text in the search eld .
Y ou can also subscribe to an iCal (or other .ics) calendar published on the web by tapping a link to the calendar you rec eive in an email message on iP od touch. Adding C alendar Even ts to iP od touch Y ou can also enter and edit calendar events dir ectly on iPod touch.
Responding to Meeting In vitations If you have a Microsoft Exchange acc ount set up on iP od touch with Calendars enabled, you can receive and re spond to meeting in vitations from people in your organization. When y ou receive an in vitation, the meeting appears in your calendar with a dotted line around it.
T ap Attendees to see the other people in vited to the meeting. T ap a name to see • an attendee ’ s contact information. T ap the email address to send a message t o the attendee. T ap Aler t to set iP od touch to sound an alert before the meeting.
Photos 8 About Photos iP od touch lets you carry photos and videos with you, so you can share them with your family , friends , and associates. Y ou can sync photos and videos (Mac only) from your computer , and use photos as wallpaper . Y ou can also send photos and videos in email messages , and upload photos to MobileMe galleries.
View photos and videos: 1 In Photos , tap a photo album. 2 T ap a thumbnail to see the photo or video in full screen. Show or hide the con trols: T ap the full-screen photo or video t o show the controls. T ap again to hide the controls. Play a video: T ap in the center of the screen.
View video in full screen, or t video to screen: Double tap the screen to scale the video to ll the screen. D ouble-tap again to t the video to the screen. P an around a photo: Drag the photo . See the next or previous photo or video: Flick left or right.
If you don ’t see , tap the screen to sho w the controls. P aste a video in an email message: 1 T ouch and hold a video until the Copy command appears. 2 T ap Copy . 3 Go to Mail and create a new message . 4 T ap to place an inser tion point where y ou want to place the video , then tap the insertion p oint to dis play the edit commands.

Y ouT ube 10 F inding and Viewing Videos Y ouT ube feature s shor t videos submitted by people from around the w orld. T o use some features on iP od touch, you need to sign in to a Y ouT ube account when prompted . F or information about requirements and ho w to get a Y ouT ube account, go to www .
Search for a video: 1 T ap Search, then tap the Y ouT ube search eld. 2 T ype a word or phrase tha t describes what you ’ re looking for , then tap Search. Y ouT ube shows results based on video titles , descriptions, tags, and user names. Listed videos show title , rating, number of views, length, and the account name that post ed the video.
Rewind or fast-forward T ouch and hold or . Skip to any point in a video Drag the playhead along the scrubber bar . Stop watching a video bef ore it nishes playing T ap Done, or press the Home button. T oggle between scaling a video to ll the screen or t to the screen Double-tap the video.
Getting More Information T ap next to the video to show the video ’ s commen ts, description, date added , and other information. Rate the video or add a comment On the More Inf o screen, tap “Rate , C omment, or Flag ,” then choose “R ate or Commen t.
Unsubscribe from a Y ouT ube account: In Subscriptions, tap an account in the list , then tap Unsubscribe. View playlists: In Playlists, tap a playlist to see the list of videos you ’ve added . T ap any video in the playlist to begin pla ying videos from that point in the playlist.
Stocks 11 Viewing Stock Quotes Stocks lets you see the lat est available quot es for your selected stocks , funds, and indexes . T o use Stocks, i P od touch must join a Wi-F i network that is connected to the Internet. S ee “Connecting to the Internet” on page 35 .
When you ’ re viewing a chart in landscape orientation, you can touch the chart to display the v alue for a specic poin t in time. Use two ngers to see the change in v alue over a specic period of time. Delete a stock: T ap and tap nex t to a stock, then tap Delete.
Maps 12 F inding and Viewing Locations W ARNING: F or impor tant information about driving and na vigating safely , see the Important Product Information Guide at www .apple.com/support/manuals/ipodtouch. Maps provides street maps , satellite phot os, a h ybrid view , and street views of locations in many of the world’ s countries .
A pin marks the location. T ap the pin to see the name or description of the location. T ap to get information about the location, get directions, add the location to your bookmarks or contacts list, or email a link to Google Maps.
Y our current (approximat e) location is indicated by a blue marker . If your loca tion can’ t be determined precisely , a blue circle also appears around the marker . The size of the circle depends on how precisely y our location can be determined—the smaller the circle , the greater the precision.
See a satellite or h ybrid view : T ap , then tap Satellit e or Hybrid to see just a satellite view or a combined street map and satellit e view . T o return to map view , tap Map. See the Google Street View of a location: T ap . Flick left or right to pan through the 360° panoramic view .
See the location of someone’ s address in y our contacts list T ap in the search eld , then tap C ontacts and choose a contact. T o locate an address in this way , the con tact must include at least one address. If the contact has more than one address , choose the one you want to locate .
4 Do one of the following: • T o view directions one step at a time, tap Start, then tap to see the next leg of the trip. T ap to go back. • T o view all the directions in a list, tap , then tap List. T ap any item in the list to see a map showing that leg of the trip .
Showing T rac Conditions When av ailable, you can show highway trac conditions on the map . Show or hide trac conditions: T ap , then tap Show T rac or Hide T rac.
Con tact a business or get directions: T ap the pin that marks a business, then tap next to the name. F rom there, you can do the following: T ap an email address to send email to , or a web address t o visit. • F or directions, tap Directions T o Here or Directions From Here .
W eather 13 Viewing W eather Summaries T ap W eather from the Home screen to get the current temperatur e and six-day forecast f or one or more cities around the world . T o use W eather , iP od touch must join a Wi-Fi network that is c onnected to the Internet.
Add a city: 1 T ap , then tap . 2 Enter a city name or zip code, then tap Search. 3 Choose a city in the search list. Switch to another city: Flick left or right, or tap to the left or right of the row of dots. The number of dots below the weather boar d shows how many cities ar e stored .
V oic e Memos 14 Recording V oice Memos V oice Memos lets you use iP od touch as a portable recording device (not av ailable on rst-generation iP od touch).
Record a voic e memo: 1 T ap to star t recording . Y ou can also press the center button on a compatible thr ee- button headset with mic. 2 T ap to pause or to stop recording . Y ou can also press the cen ter button on a compatible three-button headset with mic t o stop recording .
See more information: T ap next to the memo . The Inf o screen displays inf ormation about the length, recording time and dat e, and provides additional editing and sharing functions. Add a label to a memo: On the Info screen tap , then select a label in the list on the Label screen.

Settings 18 Settings allows you to customiz e iP od touch applications, set the date and time, congure your netw ork connection, and ent er other preference s for iP od touch. Wi-F i Wi-Fi settings det ermine whether iPod touch use s local Wi-Fi networks to connect to the Internet.
Join a closed Wi-Fi netw ork: T o join a Wi-F i network that isn ’t shown in the list of scanned networks, choose Wi-F i > Other , then enter the netw ork name. If the network requires a passw ord, tap Securit y , tap the t ype of securit y the network uses , and enter the password .
General The General settings include date and time , security , network, and other settings that a ec t more than one application. T his is also where you can nd information about your iP od touch, and reset iP od touch to its original state.
Add a new VPN congur ation: Choose G eneral > Network > VPN > Add VPN Conguration. VPNs used within organizations allow y ou to communicate priva te information securely over a non-priv ate network. Y ou may need to congure VPN, for example , to access your w ork email on iPod t ouch.
Set the amount of time before iP od touch locks: Choose General > Auto-L ock and choose a time. P asscode Lock By default, i P od touch doesn ’t r equire you to ent er a passcode to unlock it. Set a passcode: Choose G eneral > P asscode L ock and enter a 4-digit passcode , then enter the passcode again to v erify it.
T urn o restric tions: Choose General > Restric tions, then enter the passcode. T ap Disable Restrictions, then reenter the passc ode. If you forget y our passcode, you must restore y our iPod t ouch software from iT unes. See “Updating and Restoring iPod touch Software ” on page 15 8 .
Set whether double-clicking the Home button shows iP od controls: T urn on iP od Contr ols to display iP od contr ols when you ’ re playing music and double-click the Home button. This feature works even when the dis play is turned o or iPod touch is locked.
Intern ational Use International settings to set the language f or iP od touch, turn keyboards for di erent languages on or o , and set the dat e, time , and telephone number formats f or your region. Set the language for iP od touch: Choose General > International > Language, choose the language you want t o use, then tap Done.
Reset network settings: Choose General > Reset and tap Reset Network Settings. When you reset netw ork settings, your list of previously used netw orks and VPN settings not installed by a conguration pr ole are removed .
