This Operation Manual describes the functions of the following products: Life Fitness T readmill Models: T3 0 & T3 5 See "S pecifications" in this manual for product specific features. S tatement of Purpose: The T readmill is an exercise machine that enables users to walk or run in place on a moving sur- face.
1 G ETTING S T ARTED 1.1 I MPORT ANT S AFETY I NSTRUCTIONS Read all instructions before using the treadmill. DANGER: T o reduce the risk of electrical shock, always unplug this Life Fitness product before cleaning or attempting any maintenance activity .
• Never insert objects into any opening in this product. If an object should drop inside, turn of f the power , unplug the power cord from the outlet and carefully retrieve it. If the item cannot be reached, contact Life Fitness Customer Support Services.
1.2 S ETUP Read this Operation Manual before setting up the Life Fitness T readmill. Place the treadmill where it will be used before beginning the setup procedure. E LECTRICAL P OWER R EQUIREMENTS The Life Fitness T readmill is intended for use on a normal 120-V olt electrical circuit in the United S tates and Canada.
G ROUNDING I NSTRUCTIONS This Life Fitness product must be properly grounded. If the unit malfunctions or breaks down, proper grounding provides a path of least resist ance for the electric current, which reduces the risk of shock to anyone touching or using the equip- ment.
P OWER S WITCH Located on the front panel at the base of the treadmill, the ON/OFF switch has two positions - "I" (one) for ON and "0" (zero) for OFF .
C ENTERING T HE B EL T After the treadmill has been inst alled and leveled, the belt must be checked to confirm proper tracking. First, plug the power cord into a suitable outlet. See the topic titled Electrical Requirement s, which appears earlier in this section, for details.
2 T HE D ISPLA Y C ONSOLE 2.1 D ISPLA Y C ONSOLE O VERVIEW The computerized display console on the treadmill allows the user to tailor a workout to personal fitness abilities and goals and to monitor progress. With this easy-to-use console, the user can track fitness improvement from one workout to the next.
2.2 D ISPLA Y C ONSOLE D ESCRIPTIONS A. WORKOUT PROFILE WINDOW: Displays a matrix of light s representing the upcoming terrain. During a workout, the light columns move across the screen from right to left. The higher the column of lights, the greater the incline and workout intensity .
14 H. GO SYSTEM-QUICK ST ART , COOL DOWN KEYS: GO SYSTEM-QUICK ST ART : This is the fastest way to begin exercising, and it bypasses the steps involved in selecting a specific workout program. Once a GO SYSTEM-QUICK ST ART key is pressed, a MANUAL workout begins.
15 2.3 R EADING R ACK The display console design includes a built-in reading rack, where a book or magazine can be placed during a workout. 2.4 A CCESSOR Y T RA YS The accessory trays are located on either side of the display console.
3 H EART S YNC TM E XERCISE 3.1 W HY H EART S YNC TM E XERCISE ? Research shows that maintaining a specific heart rate while exercising is the optimal way to monitor the intensity of a workout and to achieve maximum results. That is the idea behind the Life Fitness HeartSync approach to exercise.
3.2 H EART R AT E M ONITORING T HE P OLAR ® H EART R AT E C HEST S TRAP The Life Fitness T readmill is equipped with Polar ® telemetry , a heart rate monitoring system in which electrodes, pressed against the the skin, transfer heart rate signals to the treadmill console.
4 T HE W ORKOUTS 4.1 W ORKOUT O VERVIEWS The following workouts are pre-programmed for the Life Fitness T readmill. GO SYSTEM-QUICK ST ART is the fastest way to begin exercising, and it bypasses the steps involved in selecting a specific workout program.
19 CARDIO is a higher intensity workout for more fit users, emphasizing cardiovascular benefits and maximum fat burning. The user must wear a heart rate chest strap. The workout program automaticaly adjust s the intensity level, based on the actual heart rate, to maintain the recommended rate at 80 percent of the theoretical maximum.
20 4.2 S ETTING U P W ORKOUTS The chart below lists the step s for setting up each workout program, except for those stored under the MY WORKOUT key . See section 4.4, titled My Workout, and section 4.5, titled Custom W orkout (T3-5 Only) , for more information.

22 4.3 W ORKOUT D ESCRIPTIONS G O S YSTEM -Q UICK S T ART This is the fastest way to begin exercising, and it bypasses the step s involved in selecting a specific workout program. Press one of the GO SYSTEM-QUICK ST ART keys to begin a MANUAL workout at a preset speed: English Unit s Metric Unit s W ALK 3.
H ILL The Life Fitness-patented HILL workout offers a variety of configurations for interval training. Intervals are periods of intense aerobic exercise separated by regular periods of lower-intensity exercise.
24 Each column, as seen in the WORKOUT PROFILE WINDOW and the chart above, represents one interval. The overall duration of the workout determines the length of each interval. 1 to 9 minutes: A workout with a duration of less than 10 minutes is insufficient for the Hill program to complete all four phases adequately .
25 R ANDOM The RANDOM program creates a terrain of hills and valleys that varies with each workout. More than one million differ- ent patterns are possible. M ANUAL During a MANUAL workout, the program does not automatically change speed, incline, or time duration, as selected by the user during the workout setup.
S PORT T RAINING W ORKOUT TM This program simulates outdoor conditions that a runner would experience. The baseline level is a 1.5-percent grade, which simulates running on flat ground. A zero-percent grade simulates running downhill. Inclines last between 30 and 60 seconds.
27 F AT B URN This workout is designed to maintain a recommended t arget heart rate at 65 percent of the theoretical maximum† for optimal results. Throughout the workout, the user wears a chest strap. The console continuously monitors and displays the heart rate, adjusting the intensity level of the treadmill to reach and maintain the t arget.
28 H EART R AT E H ILL TM This program combines the standard HILL workout profile with a HeartSync workout. It consists of three hills that target three heart rate goals: The first hill brings the heart rate to 90 percent of the t arget rate. The second hill increases the rate to 95 per cent.
29 H EART R AT E I NTERV AL TM This program also combines the standard HILL workout profile with a HeartSync workout. It alternates between a hill, which brings the heart rate up to the target rate*, and a valley , which brings the heart rate down to 90 percent of the tar- get.
30 E XTREME H EART R AT E TM This intense, varied workout is designed to help more experienced users to break through fitness improvement plateaus. The workout alternates between two target heart rates* as quickly as possible. The effect is similar to that of running sprints.
31 30-M INUTE W ALK (T3-5 O NL Y ) This workout is ideal for beginning exercisers or regular walkers. At the start of the program, the treadmill runs for five minutes at 1 MPH below the selected speed. Afterward, the program automatically adjusts the speed in .
32 3-M ILE J OG (T3-5 O NL Y ) This workout is an ideal next step for users who no longer derive a sufficient workout from the 30-MINUTE W ALK pro- gram. At the start of the program, the treadmill runs for five minutes at 1.5 MPH below the selected speed.
33 45-M INUTE C ROSS -T RAIN (T3-5 O NL Y ) Cross-training is a complete, varied workout designed to reduce the risk of stress-related injuries that can result from workouts limited to one, repetitive activity .
34 C OOL -D OWN Life Fitness' unique Cool-down Protocol automatically customizes every cool-down based on the workout performance. Factors such as speed, incline, duration and heart rate determine the duration and intensity of the cool-down.
35 E DITING S ETTINGS F OR W ORKOUTS S A VED U NDER M Y W ORKOUT Use the following steps to change settings for a stored workout or to change a workout name. 1. Press the MY WORKOUT key . 2. Scroll through the user names displayed in the MESSAGE CENTER, either by repeatedly pressing the MY WORKOUT key or by pressing the ARROW keys.
36 4.5 C USTOM W ORKOUT (T3-5 O NL Y ) It is possible to set up a customized workout on the treadmill and store it in the console memory . Customization involves selecting one of four workout types and setting values for various attributes, such as the workout goal, to suit personal preferences.
37 The treadmill computer memory can save at least 20 changes. When memory is used up, and the computer cannot save any further changes, the console emits two short beep s at the user's next attempt to save a change, indicating that no more changes can be saved.
38 4.6 S ELECTING A N I NTENSITY L EVEL The steps for setting up a HILL or RANDOM workout include selecting a level. The word "level" refers to a range of incline percentages. The treadmill features 20 levels, with Level 1 having the lowest average incline grade and Level 20 having the highest.
In the HILL and RANDOM workouts, these varying hills occur for equal durations, as discussed in the HILL workout description in Section 4. It is possible to change the incline percentage manually , but the change remains in ef fect only for the duration of the hill in question.
5 U SER M ENU The USER MENU makes it possible to change certain settings in the treadmill sof tware 5.1 E NTERING A ND U SING T HE U SER M ENU Enter the USER MENU BY using one of two procedures: Press the STOP key twice, and then hold down the ENTER key .
5.2 U SER M ENU I TEMS U SER S T A TISTICS The User S tatistics mode is used to display the current, accumulated st atistics of the workouts stored under the My Workout s feature.
S OFTW ARE V ERSION N UMBERS Use the UP and DOWN ARROW keys to toggle between displays of the current software version for the console, and for the Motor Controller . The MESSAGE CENTER displays the Console Software V ersion number as "CONSOLE VER=XX.
SLEEP TIME: Of f Off-99 Without user activity , treadmill goes into Sleep Mode after a preset time (range is from 1 to 99 minutes). T o conserve power , the MESSAGE CENTER and WORKOUT PROFILE go blank, except for a single indicator . T o start a workout while in Sleep mode, press any key .
6 S ERVICE A ND T ECHNICAL D ATA 6.1 P REVENT A TIVE M AINTENANCE T IPS The Life Fitness T3-0 and T3-5 treadmills is backed by the engineering excellence and reliability of Life Fitness and is one of the most rugged and trouble-free pieces of exercise equipment on the market today .
The optimum operating position of the striding belt is from 1.75" (45 mm) to 2.25" (57 mm) from either side of the frame. If the striding belt travels beyond this position, see How to Adjust and T ension the S triding Belt or contact Life Fitness Customer Support Services for proper alignment instructions, 1-800-328-9714 (USA).
6.3 H OW T O A DJUST A ND T ENSION T HE S TRIDING B EL T O N T HE L IFE F ITNESS T READMILL Do not move treadmill or place hands under treadmill while it is plugged into an electrical outlet! T ool re.
T RACKING (C ENTERING ) A N E XISTING O R N EW S TRIDING B EL T 1 Locate the two access holes to the belt tensioning bolts on each of the rear roller guards. 2 S tand on the sides of the treadmill and straddle the belt, not st anding on it.
