8 Quick Start F our Steps to Playing Music on iP od mini T o set up iP od mini, you install sof tware from the iPod CD, and impor t songs from your music CD collection or purchase songs from the iTunes Music Store (available in some countries only). Then you transfer the songs to iPod mini as the battery charges, then start listening to music.
Quick Start 9 Step 3: Connect iP od mini to Charge the Battery and T ransf er Music Connect iP od mini to a high-power USB 2.0 port on your computer using the included iP od Dock Connector to USB 2.0 Cable. When you connect iPod mini to your computer , iT unes opens.
10 Quick Start Important: Be sure to connect iP od mini to a high-power USB 2.0 port directly on your computer , or to a pow ered USB 2.0 hub that’ s connected to your computer . iP od mini won ’t work if it’ s connec ted to a low-pow er USB 2.0 port, such as those sometimes found on keyboards or other peripherals.
Quick Start 11 Step 4: Play Music When the song transfer is complete and you ’ re ready to disconnect iP od mini, squeeze both sides of the Dock connector to disconnect the cable from iPod mini. Then use the Click Wheel and Select button (in the center of iPod mini) to browse for a song.

When you create a list of songs on your i P od mini, the songs appear in an On-The-Go playlist. T o create an On-The-Go playlist: 1 Highlight a song and press and hold the Select button until the song title flashes.
18 Using iPod mini T o transfer On-The-Go playlists to your c omputer: n If iPod mini is set t o transfer songs automatically (see page 26), and you create an On-The-Go playlist, the playlist automatically transfers to iT unes when you connect iP od mini.
Using iPod mini 19 Note: If your computer doesn ’t hav e a USB 2.0 port but has a FireWire 400 (IEEE 1 394) port, you can use an iP od D ock Connector to F ireWire Cable (av ailable for purchase at www .ipod.com/store). By default, iP od mini imports songs automatically when you connect it to your computer .
20 Using iPod mini T o ejec t iP od mini: n Select i P od mini in the iTunes Source list and click the Eject button. If you’ re using a Mac, you can also eject iPod mini b y dragging the iP od mini icon on the desktop to the T rash.
Using iPod mini 21 Connecting iP od mini Using the iP od mini Dock (A vailable Separ ately) The iP od mini Dock holds iPod mini upright as it charges or transfers music. Connect the Dock to your computer using the iP od Dock Connector to USB 2.0 Cable , then put iP od mini in the Dock.
22 Using iPod mini 2 Connect the speakers or stereo to the Dock Line Out port using an audio cable with a 3.5 millimeter st ereo miniplug. 3 Use the iP od mini controls to play a song . When the Dock is connected to an external audio source, use the volume controls on the external source to change the volume.

Y ou can create as many playlists as you like using any of the songs in y our computer’ s music library.
26 Using iPod mini T ransferring Songs and Playlists to iP od mini Automatically By default, iP od mini updates aut omatically when you connect it to your computer .
Using iPod mini 27 When iPod mini is set to transfer songs manually , iT unes won ’t update it automatically when you connect it to your computer . T o set iPod mini to transf er songs manually: 1 In iT unes, select iPod mini in the Source list and click the Options button.
28 Using iPod mini Modifying Playlists on iP od mini If you have set iP od mini to transfer songs manually (see abo ve), you can create new playlists on iP od mini, and add songs to or delete songs from playlists alr eady on iP od mini.
Using iPod mini 29 T o set the playing speed of an audiobook: n Select Settings > Audiobooks and select a speed. Setting the reading speed only affects audiobooks purchased fr om the iT unes Music Store or audible.
30 Using iPod mini When you set iP od mini to shuffle albums, it plays all the songs on an album in order , then randomly selects another album in the list and plays through it in order . Setting iP od mini to Repeat Songs Y ou can set iPod mini to repeat a song ov er and over , or to r epeat a sequence of songs.
Using iPod mini 31 Setting Songs to Play at the Same Rela tive V olume Level iT unes can automatically adjust the volume of songs, so they play at the same relative volume level, so one song doesn’t seem unusually louder or softer than the next. Y ou can set iPod mini to use the iTune s volume settings.
32 Using iPod mini Even if you don ’t set the back light timer , you can turn on the backlight at any time by pressing and holding the Menu button on iP od mini or selecting Backlight from the main menu. After a few seconds , the backlight turns off.
