1 4 1 Getting Star ted What Y ou Need T o use iP od touch, you need:  A Mac or a PC with a USB 2.0 por t and one of the following operating systems:  Mac OS X version 1 0. 4. 1 0 or later  Windows XP Home or P rofessional with Ser vice P ack 2 or later  Windows Vista Home Premium, Business , En terprise, or Ultimate edition  iT unes 7 .
Chapter 1 Getting Started 5 The USB port on most k eyboards doesn ’t pr ovide enough power . Unless y our k eyboard has a high-powered USB 2.0 port, you must connect iP od touch to a USB 2.0 por t on your computer . 3 F ollow the onscreen instructions in iT unes to set up iP od touch and sync your music, video , phot os, and other content.

Chapter 1 Getting Started 7 The USB port on most k eyboards doesn ’t pr ovide enough power . Y ou must connect iP od touch to a USB 2.0 por t on your c omputer , unless your keyboard has a high- powered USB 2.0 port. 2 Select i P od touch in the iT unes sourc e list (below Devices, on the left).
8 Chapter 1 Getting Started If you want to watch r ented movies on iP od touch, transfer them to iP od touch using the Movies pane in iT une s. If there ’ s not enough room on iP od touch for all the con tent you ’ve specified , iT unes asks if you wan t to create a special playlist and set it to sync with iP od touch.
Chapter 1 Getting Started 9 The passwor d for your Y ahoo! email account isn ’t sa ved on your computer . If you sync a Y ahoo! email account, you must enter the passw ord on iP od touch. F rom the Home screen choose Settings > Mail, choose y our Y ahoo! account , then enter your passwor d in the password field.

Chapter 2 Basics 13 Cust omizing the Home Screen Layout Y ou can customize the layout of icons on the Home scr een—including the D ock icons along the bottom of the screen. If you want , arrange them over multiple Home scr eens. Rearrange icons 1 T ouch and hold an y Home screen icon until all the icons begin to wiggle .
14 Chapter 2 Basics Create addition al Home screens m While arranging icons, drag a button t o the edge of the screen until a new screen appears. Y ou can flick to return to the original screen and drag more ic ons to the new screen. Y ou can create up to nine screens.

For photos and w eb pages, you can double-tap (tap twice quickly) to zoom in, then double-tap again to zoom out. F or maps, double-tap to zoom in and tap once with two fingers to z oom out.

20 Chapter 2 Basics Acc epting or Rejecting Dic tionary Suggestions iP od touch has dictionaries for English, English (UK), French, F rench (Canada), German, Japanese , Spanish, Italian, and Dutch. The appropriate dictionar y is activated automatically when y ou selec t a keyboard on iP od touch.
Chapter 2 Basics 21 Connecting to the In ternet iP od touch connects to the Internet via Wi-F i networks . i P od touch can join AirP or t and other Wi-Fi netw orks at home, at work, or at Wi-Fi hotspots ar ound the world.

4 34 4 Photos T ap Photos t o view your photos , use a photo as wallpaper , and play slide shows. iP od touch lets you sync photos from y our computer so you can share them with your family , friends, and associat es on the high-resolution dis play .

6 45 6 Ap plications Safari Sur fing the W eb Safari lets you see webpage s just as they were designed to be seen in computer-based browsers. A simple double-tap lets y ou zoom in; rotate iP od touch sidewa ys for a wider view . Search using Google or Y ahoo!—both are built in.

64 Chapter 6 Applications Maps Maps provides street maps , satellite photos, and h ybrid views of locations in many of the world’ s countries. Y ou can get detailed driving directions and, in some areas , traffic information.

Settings allows you to customiz e iPod touch applications , set the date and time, configure Wi-F i connec tions , and enter other pref erences for iP od touch. Wi-F i Wi-F i settings determine when and how iP od touch joins a Wi-Fi netw ork.

Chapter 7 Settings 79 Erase all con tent and settings m Choose General > Reset and tap “Erase All Content and Settings.” All your data and media are deleted . Y ou must sync iP od touch with your c omputer to restor e contacts, songs, videos, and other data and media.
80 Chapter 7 Settings Setting a volume limit only limits the volume of music (including podcasts and audiobooks) and videos (including ren ted movies), and only when headphones, earphones, or s peak ers are connected to the headphone s por t on iPod t ouch.
