10 Quick Start Setting Up iPod to Pla y Music T o set up i P od, you charge the batter y , install software from the iP od CD , and import songs from your music CD collection to your computer . Then you transfer the songs to iP od and star t listening to music.
Quick Start 11 Step 2: Install the Software Insert the iPod CD into your comput er and install iT unes and the iP od software. Step 3: Import Music to Y our Computer Complete this step if y ou haven ’t already transf erred music to your computer .
12 Quick Start Step 4: Connect iP od and T ransfer Music Connect iP od to your computer using the included iP od Dock Connector to F ireWire Cable. Y ou can also use the optional iP od Dock (see page 42). Be sur e the connectors on both ends of the cable are oriented correctly .
Quick Start 13 If your Windows PC doesn ’t ha ve a 6-pin F ireWire port: If your computer doesn ’t hav e a 6-pin FireWire (IEEE 1 3 94) port, here are other ways y ou can connect iPod: • If your computer has a 4-pin F ireWire port, use the included 6-pin–to–4-pin Fir eWire adapter .
14 Quick Start Step 5: Play Music When the song transfer is complete , disconnect iPod from your comput er . Squeeze both sides of the Dock connector to disconnect the cable from iPod . Then use the T ouch Wheel and Select button to browse f or a song.

Using iPod 17 iP od Controls Reset iP od (For use during tr oubleshooting) T oggle the Hold switch (set it to Hold , then turn it off again). Then press Menu and Play/P ause simultaneously for about 5 seconds, until the Apple logo appears. T urn on iPod Press an y button.
18 Using iPod iP od Controls Disable the iP od buttons (So you don ’t press them accidentally) Set the Hold switch to Hold (an orange bar appears). Skip to any point in a song From the No w Playing screen, press the Select button. Then scroll to any poin t in the song.
Using iPod 19 Disabling iP od Buttons Using the Hold S witch If you’ re carr ying iPod in your pocket and you don ’t want to press the buttons or turn it on accidentally , you can make the buttons inactive. n Set the Hold switch to Hold. Slide the switch toward the center (so you can see the orange stripe) to disable the controls.
20 Using iPod Queueing Up a List of Songs Y ou can set iPod to play the songs you wan t in the order you want. When you creat e a list of songs on your iP od, the songs appear in an On-The-Go playlist. T o create an On-The-Go playlist: 1 Highlight a song and press and hold the Select button until the song title flashes.
Using iPod 21 T o rate a song: 1 Start playing the song. 2 From the No w Playing screen, press the Select button twice. 3 Use the T ouch Wheel to select a rating. 22 Using iPod Note: If you are using a Windows PC with a USB port and the optional iP od Dock Connector to USB 2.0 + FireWir e Cable, you can connect the cable ’ s FireWire connector to the iP od Po.
Using iPod 23 T o eject iP od: n Select iPod in the iT unes Source list and click the Eject button. If you’ re using a Mac, you can also eject iPod b y dragging the iPod icon on the deskt op to the T rash.

Using iPod 25 About the iT unes Music Stor e Using iT unes, you can preview , purchase, and download your fa vorite songs from the iT unes Music Store (a vailable in some countries only). There are hundr eds of thousands of songs available for purchase.
26 Using iPod If you are using iT unes 4.5 or later on a Windows P C, you can conv ert nonprotected WMA files to AAC or MP3 f ormat. This can be useful if you hav e a library of music encoded in WMA format. F or more information, open iT unes and choose Help > iTunes and Music Store Help .
Using iPod 27 Creating Pla ylists on Y our Computer T o create a playlist: n In iT unes, click the Add (+) button and t ype a name for the playlist, then drag songs from the library or another playlist to the new playlist. T o create a Smart Playlist: n In iT unes, choose File > New Smart Playlist and choose the criteria for your playlist.
28 Using iPod 3 Select “Only update checked songs.” T o set iP od to updat e only selected playlists: 1 In iT unes, selec t iPod in the Sour ce list and click the Options button.
Using iPod 29 Deleting Songs and Playlists F rom iP od Manually If you have set iP od to transf er songs manually (see above), you can delete songs and playlists from iP od individually . Songs deleted from iP od manually are not deleted from the iT unes library .
30 Using iPod Listening to Spoken Word A udio Y ou can purchase and download s poken word audiobooks fr om the iT unes Music Store (available in some coun tries only) and listen to them on your iP od. Y ou can use iTunes t o transfer audiobooks to your iP od the same way y ou transfer songs.
Using iPod 31 T o set iP od to repea t songs: n Select Settings from the iPod main menu. • T o repeat all songs in the list , set Repeat to All. • T o repeat one song o ver and over , set Repeat to One. T o set iP od to shuffle songs or albums: 1 Select Settings from the iPod main menu.
32 Using iPod Using the iP od Equaliz er Y ou can use equalizer presets to change iP od sound to suit a particular music genre or style. For example , to make rock music sound better , set the equalizer t o Rock. n Select Settings > EQ and selec t an equalizer preset.

34 Using iPod Using the Extra Feature s of Y our iP od Using iP od as an External Hard Disk Y ou can use iPod as a hard disk, to store and transf er data files. T o enable iPod as a hard disk: 1 In iT unes, selec t iPod in the Sour ce list and click the Options button.
Using iPod 35 Prev enting iT unes F rom Opening Automatically If you use iP od primarily as a hard disk, you may want t o disable iT unes from opening automatically when you connect iP od to your computer . T o prevent iT unes from opening automatically when you connect iP od to your computer: 1 In iT unes, selec t iPod in the Sour ce list.
36 Using iPod 3 Select a sound. If you select Beep, the alarm will be audible through the internal speaker . If you select a playlist, you ’ll need to connect iP od to speakers or headphones to hear the alarm.
Using iPod 37 T o import contact information manually: 1 Connect iP od and open your favorit e email or contacts application. Impor ting contacts works with P alm Desktop , Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Entourage, and Eudora, among others. 2 Drag contacts from the application ’ s address book to the iPod C ontacts folder .
38 Using iPod T o view notes: n Select Ex tras > Notes. Recording Voic e Memos Y ou can record voice memos using an optional iPod-compatible micr ophone (available for purchase at www .apple.com/st ore). Y ou can store recordings on your iP od and transfer them to your comput er .
Using iPod 39 T o transfer voice memos to your computer: If iP od is set to transfer songs a utomatically (see page 2 7) and you r ecord voice memos , the voice memos are automatically transferred t o a playlist in iT unes when y ou connect iP od. Y ou see the new V oice M emos playlist in the iT unes Source list.
40 Using iPod T o erase photos from a photo card: 1 Import photos from the card (see above). 2 Select Erase Card. All photos are deleted from the photo car d. T o transfer photos to your computer: n Connect iP od to your computer and open the application you use to transf er photos from your digital camera.
Using iPod 41 iP od Accessories iP od comes with some accessories, and many other accessories are available at www .apple.com/store. iP od Remote (Included With Some Models) T o use the iPod Remote , connect it to the iPod Remote port, then connect the Apple Earphones (or another set of headphones) to the remote .
42 Using iPod Use the remote ’ s Hold switch to disable the remote ’ s buttons. The iP od Hold switch and the iP od Remote Hold switch do not affect one another . iP od Dock (Included With Some Models) The iP od Dock holds iPod upright as it char ges or transfers music.
Using iPod 43 Using the iP od Dock, y ou can play music from iP od over external powered s peakers or a home stereo . Y ou need an audio cable with a standard 3.5 millimeter ster eo miniplug (many external speakers have this type of cable attached). T o play music from iPod using the Dock: 1 Place iPod in the Dock.
44 Using iPod Apple Earphones iP od comes with a pair of high-quality earbud headphones. T o use the earbud headphones: n Plug them in to the Headphones port, then place the earbud in your ear as shown. W arning Listening to music at high volume ov er extended periods of time can damage your hearing.

46 Using iPod Y ou can charge the iP od battery in two ways: • If you have a Mac, you can charge iPod b y connecting it to your computer . If you have a Windows PC with a 6-pin F ireWire port, in most cases you can charge iP od by connecting it to your computer .
Using iPod 47 T o charge the battery using the iP od Power Adapter: 1 Connect the AC plug adapter to the power adapter (this may already be assembled). 2 Connect the FireWir e cable included with iPod (or the F ireWire connector on the optional iP od Dock Connector to USB 2.

Using iPod 49 Battery States When iP od is not connected to a power source , a battery icon in the top-right corner of the iP od screen shows about how much charge is left. If iPod is connected to a pow er source, the battery icon animates to show that the battery is charging.
