B.2. Selecting the Right Paper B-3 Smoothness The paper should have a smoot h, uncoated surface. Paper with a roug h or sandy surface can cause voids in the printed output. Paper that is too smooth, however, can cause multiple fee ding and fogging problems.
B.3. Special Paper B-4 out flat . Most paper al so has a top and bo ttom surf ace. Loading instructions are usually given on the paper package. Electrostat ic properties: During the printi ng process the paper is electro staticall y charged to attract the toner.
B.3. Special Paper B-5 Overhead P rojection (OHP) Film OHP film must be able to wit hstand the heat of fus ing during the printing pro cess. It s hould satisfy the con- ditions in Ta ble B.3. To avoid trouble, O HP film must be delivered face-up. If OHP fil m jams f requently, pull the top o f the shee t very gent ly as it le aves the printer.
B.3. Special Paper B-6 Envelopes The print er can print o n envelopes us ing paper wit h a basis w eight of 6 0 to 79 g/m² (16 to 21 lbs /ream). Enve- lopes m ust be manua lly fed.
C.1. Parallel Interface C-1 Appendix C Host Computer Interface This appendix describes the signals used in the laser printer's parallel, RS-232C/RS-422A interfaces. It also lists pin assignments , signal functions, timings, con nector specifications , and voltage levels.
C.1. Parallel Interface C-2 Interfac e Signals The pins of the p arallel i nterface co nnector ca rry the sig nals li sted in T able C.1 . Aste risks in the t able indi- cate si gnals that are ac tive low. T he ta ble also indicates whether e ach signal is incoming o r outgoi ng with respec t to the print er.

C.2. RS-232C/RS-422A In terface C-4 C.2. RS-232C/RS-422A Interface RS-232C interf ace Interf ace Signals The pins of t he pri nter's R S-232C int erface connect or carry t he sign als list ed in T able C.2 . The t able als o indicate s whe ther each s ignal is incom ing or o utgoi ng with respec t to the print er.
C.2. RS-232C/RS-422A Interface C-5 RS-422A interfa ce The se rial interf ace of t his pri nter wa s set t o RS-23 2C mode befo re leav ing the fa ctory. Ho wever, by chang ing the jumper connector on the main circuit board, the interface can be cha nged to RS-422A mode.
C.2. RS-232C/RS-422A In terface C-6 3. Pull the mai n circuit board all the way o ut of the pri nte r. ☛ Before pulling the main board out, clean an area on t he table, et c., at the back of t he printer's rear panel. Foreign object s, acciden- tally sticking to the back of the main board, can cause serious damage t o the printer.
C.2. RS-232C/RS-422A Interface C-7 Interf ace Signals The pi ns in the pr inter's RS- 422A interf ace connector carry the s ignals li sted in Table C. 3. Overvi ew of Sign als (RS -422A ) FG - Fra me Gro und - (Pin 1) This pin is connected directly to the printer frame.
C.3. RS-232C/RS-422A Protocol C-8 C.3. RS-232C/RS-422A Protocol A protocol is a set o f rules the co mputer follow s in sending dat a to the printe r. The RS-232C/ RS-422A p aram- eters are store d in battery b acked-up memory . They ar e indicat ed on the status pri ntout.
C.4. RS-232C Cable Connection C-9 H7: Buffer nearly-empty th resh old This is a perce ntage fr om 0 to 99. Th e facto ry sett ing is 70 . The factory settings of the buf fer nearly-f ull and nearly-emp ty threshold s (H6 a nd H7) a re subj ect to cha nge witho ut no tific ation .
