Introduction The Kyocera laser printer has many extremely desirable feat ures. It was designed to make a contributi on to a cleaner environ ment as well as to represent the latest generat ion of page printer techn o logy.

1.7 . Me mory Expa nsion Installatio n In this section is explained how to expand the pri nter’s memory. Expan ded printer memory en- ables you t o print more complex pages, download more fonts, and define more macros.
Withdr awing the Ma in Ci rc uit Boar d fr om the Pr int er Be su re to re move the memor y card first if ins erted i n the prin ter’s memory card slo t. With draw the main circuit board complet ely from the prin ter as follows : 1. Turn the printer’s power off.
SIMM t o be used See your Kyo cera dealer for purchasing info rmation of the SIMMs t hat are best suited for use with this pr inter . Either 1 MB, 2 MB, 4 MB, 8 MB, 16 MB or 32 MB SIMMs can be used for memory expansion . Together wit h the memory already present in the printer, this all ows memory to be expanded up to a tota l of 66 MB.
Installing and Removing SIMMs Installing SIMMs Insert the S IMM into the socket as shown rig ht. 1. Insert the co nnector end of the SIMM into t he socket. 2. Carefully push the board upright until it snaps into place . Make sur e that the catches at the ends of the socket fit into the holes at the ends of th e SIMM board.
Testing the Expansion Memory After you have finished inst alling SIMM s in the print er, test the pri nter to see if t he installation has been s uccessful. To tes t the expansion memory, pro ceed as follows : 1. Make sure the power s witch is off. Plug th e power cord into the printer and turn power on.

2.3 . Using the Mode Se lect Menu Thi s section explains how to use the MO D E key on the contr ol panel. T he MOD E ke y allo ws yo u to set or change the prin ter environment such as the number of copies to make, emulation, page orientation, code set, etc.

2.4 . Slee p (Ecopowe r) Mo de The prin ter has a sleep timer to conserve power when th e printer is not prin ting, processing , or receiving dat a. You can adjust the timer value, the length of time the printer waits before entering sleeping mo de in the absence of data.
2.5 . KIR Level This pr inter incorporates the KIR (Kyocera Image Refinement) smoothing function. KIR provides high qualit y printing by providing a software-ty pe improvement to t he resolution. Three differ- ent t ypes of KIR level can be selected. You can prin t a KIR test pattern to see how the current KIR setting wor ks.
Optimized stripes The c u rre nt KIR s etting is o ptim al. Dark verti cal stripe s S et the K I R mo de to or . Tr y pr inti ng the t est pattern again. If you still get dark ver tical stripes, adjust the print density control to a lighter settin g. (See the last page in this man- ual .

2.9. Setting the Audio Warning (Buzzer) In addition to the message displayed when the paper supply is exhau s ted, or when paper ja m- ming occurs, an audio warn ing is made to sound. This is useful, for example, when the printer is in a location some distance from the user.
The ala rm will continu e to soun d while th e error con ditio n continues (if the prin ter is in the sleep mode, t he alarm will be silent for tha t period alone).
2.1 0. Ope rating a Memory Card Hints on Writing Fonts to the Memory Card Some memo ry card writ er utility programs are available for wr itin g data to the memory card. If you write fon ts into a memory card, we recommend you write them as font data and not as host data.
Wr itin g Data to a Me mory Card A memory card can ho l d up to 127 data par tition names, depending on its capacity. When writing t o the card, a name is assigned automatically. You can use the procedure later in this section to prin t a li st of d ata n ames fo r conf irmati on.
4. Check that the mess age display has changed to , t hen press the ( FO RM FE ED ) key. This writes the file t o the memory card and instructs the printer to automat- ically prin t out a memory card write information page as shown below. Formatting a Mem ory Card Formatting allows data to be written to the card. A new memory card must be formatted be- fore it can be used in the printer .
Pri nting a l ist of dat a names The prin ter prints a lis t of all data names (referred t o as partit ions ) stor ed in a memory ca rd for reference. (Pr inting a list is also availabl e for a font car d.) The prin tout (example above) includes t he following info rmation.
Chapter 3 Fonts This chapter describes the type s of fonts you can use with the pri nter, including the pri nte r’s res iden t and KP DL f onts ( opt ion), and sy mbol sets . 3.1 . Bit map an d Scal able Fonts A font is a s et of characters o f a particular design.
Bitmap fonts A bitmap font is made of a fi xed bit patter n (Figure 3.1.). This pattern is s tored in a special format for us e in the print er. Bitmap fonts have a fixed height (size) for each char- acter. Therefore, different font sets are required for different font sizes .
3.2 . List of Fonts This sect ion cont ains a full list of the pr inter ’s reside nt fonts . You can print the same font lis t fro m the printer by usi ng the printer’s control panel key. T o print a list of fonts, refer to Mode Select Menu , List of Resident f onts .

3.3 . Symbol set A sym bol s et i s the set of alphabetical and numerical characters and symbols the printer prints. Each character is assigned to a particular character code. The page printer offers not only a large selection of bitmap and scalable fonts but also a large sel ecti on o f sy mbol sets (al so re fe rred to a s c haracter sets ).

Chapter 4 Maintenance This printer is designed to provide years of trouble-free service without the necessity of printer module replacement. However, you must replace the toner container in the printer with a replacement container from a new toner kit.
Supplying Tone r ☛ Before proceeding, take note of the following: Do not leave floppy disks etc. lying around while performi ng this mainte- nance procedure. Thi s procedure tends to raise a little toner dust whi ch can harm magnetic recor d ing media.
5. The bottom of the toner conta iner is sealed w ith a plastic st rip. Carefully pull the sealing strip off the toner co ntainer, making su re not to leak any toner. Di s- pose of the seal ing strip. 6. Install the ton er container on the devel- oper as sh own in the diagram.
Replace the Was te Toner Bott le ☛ When replaci ng the toner container, the used waste toner bottle in the printer should also be rep laced with a new one from the new toner kit. 1. Open the pri nter side cov er. 2. Remove th e waste toner bot tle as show n right .
5. Locate the new waste toner bot t le in the tone r ki t, a nd inst al l in the pr inte r as show n rig ht. ☛ Do not cap the new waste toner bot- tle. Insert the new waste toner bottle with the bottle tilted sl ightly towards you as shown i n the figure.
4.2. Cleaning In addition to the maintenance procedu res described on the followin g pages, the charger wire in the drum unit and paper feed unit should be clea ned from time to time, or whenever prin t quality problems occur. To avoid print qua lity problems, the fol lowing printer part s must be cleaned with ev ery toner container replacement .
Cleaning t he Grid 1. Take the grid cleaner from protecti ve bag in the new toner kit, and remove the cap. ☛ The grid cleaner pad is impreg nated with water. Perform the following cleaning procedure before the pad dries. 2. Attach the gri d cleaner t o the printer w ith the pad uppermost, as shown in the dia- gram.
Pap er F eed Un it To avoid print qualit y problems due to paper dust and debris, clean the paper feed unit in the foll owing manner. 1. Pull t he paper feed unit release lev er up and draw the paper feed unit all the way ou t un t il i t s t op s . 2.
Chapter 5 Tr oubleshooting Thi s c hapte r ex plains ho w to ha ndl e pri nte r prob lem s whi ch m ay or may not occu r. The pro cedure s are ea sy t o fol low. If a prob lem pe rsist s aft er you h ave com ple ted the ap pro- priate troubl eshooting proce dures, call for the a ssis tance o f a service person.
5.2 . Pow er Pro ble ms The printer power rating must be within the voltage range in your country. If in doubt, consult your d ealer. If n othing happens when yo u switch the prin ter’s power on, you have a power problem. The symptoms are a dark control panel, no printing, and n o fan sound.
5.4 . Prin t Qua lity Proble ms Print quality pr oblems range fr om une ven tone to co mpl ete ly blank out put. The troub les hoot- ing procedure fo r each type of problem is giv en below. If the checks explained in this s ection do not solve the problem, call for the assist ance of a service per son.
Dropouts, ho rizontal streaks, stray dots Clean t he charger wire. Open the print er side cover. Pull the green main charger wire cleaning knob slowly in and out a few times. See Section 4.2. Note the sp ac ing of the de fec ts. If the defects occur a t regular intervals of 60.
Faint or blurred printi ng Check the cont rol pan el. If the message is displayed and the indi- cator is fla shing, inst a ll a new ton er kit. See Section 4.1. Set the print densi ty from the control panel to a higher level than the current setting. See Sec- tion 2.
Dir t on the top ed ge or back of the p a per Check t he pape r chute and the ra mp. Draw out the paper feed unit and check for toner on the paper ramp. Clean the paper ramp (see Section 4.2. ) using t he wiper supplied, or a soft, dry, li nt-free cloth.

Message Corrective Action This message appears when an error occurs during access to the memory card using the PR ESCRIBE II ICCD comm and or from the printer’s co ntrol panel (codes and only). The erro r is indicated by one o f the n umbers listed below.
5.6 . Co rrect ing a Pape r Jam Th e message is displayed on the mes sage display when paper becomes st uck in the paper transport syst em, the paper feed timing is incorrect, or paper fails to feed at all. The jam can be corrected by removing t he paper.

Ap pendix B Paper Selection B.1. Gene ra l Guideline s The prin ter is desi gned to print on high-qualit y copier bond paper (the kin d used in ordin ary dry copier machines), but it can accept a variety of ot her types of paper as well wit hin the lim- its speci fied below.

The moist ure content of the paper varies with t he relative humidity in the room. Pac kag ing : Paper should be packed in a sturdy carton t o protect it from damage during trans- port. Qua lity paper obtained from a reputa ble supplier is usually properly packaged.
Adhesive-Backed L abels The basic rule for printing on adhesive labels is that the adhesive mus t never come into con- tact with any part of the pri nter. Adhesiv e paper sticking t o the drum or roller s will damage the pri nter. Label paper must be manually fed.
Env elope s The print er can print on envelopes using paper with a basis weight of 60 to 79 g/ m 2 (16 to 21 lbs/ream). Envelopes must be man ually fed. An envelo pe is a more complex object than a single sheet of paper. For this r eason, it may not be possibl e to obtain consi stent print ing quality over t he entire envelope s urface.
